This build is Gyldenspir Castle, inspired by 375 Castle but reimagined as a renaissance era palace using the range of pieces and building techniques now available. This build is Ice Station Icarus on the planet Krysto, inspired by Ice Planet 2002 but using the range of pieces and building techniques now available. The colour scheme and styling of this build will hopefully be recognisable to any fan of the original LEGO Ice Planet 2002 sets (1993-1994), though I have broadened the colour scheme ever so slightly for my post-apocalyptic Ice Planet setting. This display was built for Brickvention 2020 to explore something I am calling ‘Neo Fabuland’, the idea of employing Fabuland as a visual style, in much the same way that Neo-Classic Space looks to Classic Space as a set of design conventions. You can find out more about my goals for Neo Fabuland here if you are interested. This display features a large island, 10 buildings including my previously revealed Edward’s Fishing Hut, Boris’ Post Office, Wilfred’s Lighthouse, Gertrude’s Studio, Hannah’s Greenhouse, Bonnie’s B&B, The Dock, and The Bandstand as well as two previously unrevealed buildings, Bernhard’s Tavern and Dr. Dog’s Office as well as various vehicles, trees, plants and landscaping. First and foremost in this MOC I wanted to take the level of detail up above the simplified forms of the original Fabuland sets (those sets were made for young builders after all) and create a fully realised environment for the Fabuland figures to inhabit.

Thanks! Thank you! Thank you, though I did make a conscious decision not to include any antagonists in this build, as when it comes down to it they are long gone in the timeline and now the real antagonist is the hostile environment of Krysto and time.

Oh it is Ice Planet, rest assured. Though it is not meant to be Ice Planet 2002, but my own Ice Planet reimagining, Ice Planet Badlands, set 30 years after a great war on Krysto. The gate you are trying to keep is 'what can and cannot be ice planet'.

I make it pretty clear that I have broadened the colour scheme, both in my original post and in the link I provided, I am not sure what your point is. Ice Planet 2002 only has a four colour palette, and you can build in it if you like, and be as prescriptive as you like in your own builds, that is your choice. Though I must say that Gatekeeping serves no one.

This build is a large castle/landscape display featuring The Knights of the Black Falcon and The Forest Guard. First and foremost the aim of this build was to showcase what I love about those classic mid-80s Castle sets and specifically my two favourite factions. I have drawn inspiration from the original sets featuring each faction, specifically what I loved about them as a child and aimed to contrast that with what appeals to me as an adult builder. The build features two fortresses side by side, Falkenholt Castle, the fortress of the Knights of the Black Falcon and an underground network of caves and tunnels that comprise the fortress of the Forest Guard. Some of the elements that I am most happy with in this build are the level of detail and texture, the cross-section style cutaway on the edges of the build showing the internal structure of the castle as well as the geological layers of rock, clay and soil and of course the three varieties of trees that make up the forest. Thanks, glad you like it! Thanks, I definitely built this one for nine year old me. There is a little bit of dark grey, but not much. I see a lot of light grey castles built on dark grey rocks, which doesn't really make sense to me as the castle would be built from the stone that surrounds it, but I also made a decision early on to base the colour scheme of my build primarily on the 1980s colour palette (I did break this rule along the way with dark orange and dark tan). I have also tried to use different textures rather than different colours to denote different materials (eg: cut stone versus natural stone). Thanks! Thanks, I particularly enjoy building terrain. Thank you, I'm glad you like it! Cheers, yeah I have used techniques where I need them to achieve particular angles etc, but for the most part it is built pretty simply. I am more about detail and texture than crazy techniques.

I had some great feedback on my ship, LL-997 Viper (thanks!), so thought I might share the display that it was built for here. This MOC is a Neo-Classic Space base inspired by Classic Space LEGO from the 80s but using the range of pieces and building techniques now available. Growing up in the eighties and nineties means that I have fond memories of the LEGO sets from that time, Classic Castle and Space would have to be my favourites. I personally didn’t have a lot of Classic Space sets when I was younger but I have always loved them and their limited colour palette appeals to the graphic designer in me and their retro tech aesthetic speaks to my love of old-school science fiction. In designing and building my Neo-Classic Space base I set out to honour the range and play options available in those original Classic Space sets. I have reimagined several must-have elements from the classic space sets including a range of ship sizes and types, small one person rovers, movable blue lab pods, light grey terrain (I had more fun with the terrain than I expected!), handy robot assistants, and a lot of satellite dishes. You may be aware that there are established ‘rules’ for Neo-Classic Space MOCs, but I disagreed with some of them so I used my best judgement as to how to apply them in my MOC. My base is named A-83 after my younger brother Adam (he was born in 1983 at the pinnacle of the Classic Space era) who sadly passed away at the age of 18 in 2001. Together with my sister Sarah, Adam and I spent countless weekends sprawled out on the loungeroom floor playing with our LEGO when we were growing up and blue Classic Space minifigures (and classic police minifigures for that matter) remind me of Adam to this day. You can see some more detailed photos of the two larger ships, LL-999 Explorer and LL-997 Viper here. For this MOC I created a range of custom stickers for all the signage of the base as well as a set of 6 custom printed pieces for computer screens. The aim was to create graphics that echo the original LEGO printed parts from the Classic Space sets as well as the classic Seventies and Eighties science fiction vernacular. The printed pieces were expertly printed by Edd at BrickSanity in the UK. If you would like to get your hands on my sticker artwork so you can print your own, you can do so here.
