So it's been a long time since I've done any building that wasn't an out-of-the-box set, and I quite liked the challenge of the C-Model contest from a while back (TC5 was it?), so I figured that was where I'd pick up... When I first saw images of 42038, I figured that it would probably have a snow groomer as its B-model. We got something different instead, which was great, but I decided to have a bash at a snow groomer myself anyway. I tried to get as much functionality as possible, at least similar to what the real thing might have. Features are: The front blade can be raised and lowered with a mini LA, controlled via the 2-point gearbox behind the cab The rear blade can be raised and lowered with a mini LA, controlled via the 2-point gearbox The front blade can be tilted left and right from a control behind the cab An extendable winch, which can rotate 360 degrees via the control at the back On with the gratuitous photos: Front and rear blades raised. For the C-model contest I figured I'd have a shot at doing something with 8049, as of all the sets I have in the parts range, this is one of the few with a useable number of the same wheel type (amongst other reasons). This is just a quick sketch built in LDD, a Logging Loader. Its functions are: Pneumatic lifting of the two-stage crane arm Worm screw operated claw Crane rotation via the light on the cabin roof Two-stage steering via the exhaust stack - this articulates the body of the vehicle while simultaneously steering a rack-and-pinion mechanism on the middle axle, so all three axles are at a different angle Pendular suspension on the rear axle Working with pneumatics in LDD is a bit of a pain, to put it lightly. I'm not sure about the positioning of those elements as yet on the crane arm, but adjusting them will be easy enough when I build it with bricks. It uses about 400 parts at a rough guess, the pneumatics parts here are made of multiple parts so distort the true part count.

  5. Hi everyone, I figured I'd have a bash at this contest, so here's my entry: I decided to go with a Snow Groomer for this. It has six pneumatically powered functions, along with manually driven tracks: Raising and lowering of the front blade Tilting left and right of the front blade Adjust the front blade's wings Raising and lowering of the front end of the vehicle's undercarriage Raising and lowering of the rear tilling blade Raising and lowering of the tilling blade's smoothing plates and rollers All controls for these functions are in the rear bed. I opted for a manual pump rather than a motorized one, as the contest is, after all, pneumatically focused.     Initially, the pump was actually located horizontally in the base of the undercarriage, and was operated with a rocking mechanism that you pushed down on in the bed of the vehicle, but the rate at which it pumped air into the system was just too slow. It also caused the undercarriage to flex badly, as it interfered with all the pneumatic tubing in the switch area. I also tried having it as an exhaust, as you suggested, but bear in mind one of the functions is the raising of the undercarriage: I would be pushing down on the vehicle as it was trying to raise up. It was rather counter intuitive. I like it in its current location, to be totally honest; it's easy to access, and doesn't affect the vehicle itself when it's in use, regardless of the function being used I've also finished putting together the video. I've been a bit pressed for time all through building this so I haven't found time to reshoot this video (lighting is a bit of an issue), but I might get lucky with that this weekend. Just in case, here's the preliminary video which in any case shows all the functions, and also the cheap improvised backdrop I used for my photos (the tripod I mounted the camera on was itself built from Lego).

    I don't have a photo of that I can post right now, but you'll hopefully be able to see how it works in the video when it's done. Until then I'll try explain it, you can see it in the photos of the rear blade itself. The pneumatic cylinder's head is connected by a pair of 3l thin lift arms to an axle which runs the length of the blade, with the knob gears at either end. As the cylinder pushes the rollers down, it rotates this axle, in turn lowering the wings. It's set up such that the rollers and the wings touch the ground at the same time, using a single cylinder.

    Not had much time of late but I've managed to cobble together an LXF, which I've attached to this post. When I get chance I'll stick it on Rebrickable. Some notes: The door panels in the cab are 1 stud higher in the LXF than on the model, so move them down by one when building. They fit fine, it's just the angle in LDD is hard to line up.     Since I don't really have time to create instructions, I'm putting together an LDD of it instead. Hopefully it shouldn't take too long (I normally do it the other way around - design in LDD before building in real bricks). Not sure where I can host it though... I'd be happy for it to be there

    Thanks for the comments folks I didn't have any plans on making instructions, but if I can find the time I might be able to put together an LDD. I did quite consciously factor the stickers into this build, as I figured they'd fit with the theme.

    Such a great site, it's really been good to see how things have evolved in the last decade or so. One thing I noticed was that in 2009, 8265 is described as being the 'first half flagship'. I'm 99.9% sure that 8265 was released in the second half; I still have the prelim image saved on my HDD alongside that of 8258 and the Snowgroomer, and I was also under the impression that the concept of a first half flagship didn't come about until 2011 with 8070 (and since then, we've had a 1000+ part set released as the 1H flagship each year). Once again, it's a brilliant site

    Why does TLG make B-models?

    I don't have anywhere I can really build MOCs, otherwise I would; I simply don't have the space to store and sort all the loose parts, or anywhere to sit and just build whatever comes to mind. Because of that most of my models stay on display, though I switch them out and dismantle them to make space for others occasionally; I don't especially have the time for MOCing either. And because of that, I find it great that we get B-Models in sets, of all sizes (especially flagships actually, they have the biggest parts selection and usually an equally interesting B-Model), because that gives me something else to build (I quite like Creator sets for that reason actually because they have 3 models, and they're often quite diverse and interesting). Some of the best models I've built have been B-Models. 8460 had a knuckleboom crane truck which was more interesting than the A-Model IMO, and 8043 and 8258 both had great B-models too. I also recall a few years back on the Technic section of Lego's site, they had a casual poll running to gauge the popularity of B-models. IIRC a much larger percentage of people seemed to say they built them than did not. Also, there's nothing saying you have to build B-models, so why complain about something that's essentially an added bonus if you're not bothered about it anyway?

    This looks incredible. I haven't felt such a level of anticipation for the summer sets since 2010 (when we had 8043), both this and the Crawler Crane will be must haves for me (though I can hear my wallet protesting loudly about that already ). It'll probably just rest on the bed. I live near a building site where a lot of these types of truck have been coming and going the last few years, they always seem to have the clamshell crane resting on the bed, whether it's loaded or not.
  18. The crane looks far more impressive than I was expecting. Any other year and it'd probably be a full RC flagship. Took me a moment to realize the cab was on the other side of the boom, I hope we see some more photos in the next few days Also love the colour scheme, really sets it apart.
  19. According to Huw on Brickset, the B-Model is a Flatbed Truck. I hope it's along the level of 8109, a bit of a gem that set. Also, thinking about the A-Model, I'm guessing the gearbox will probably be pretty similar to the Unimog's. First selects between pneumatic compressor and geared functions, and the second selects between two geared functions (in this case, crane rotation and stabilizer extension). I would guess then that three of the four valves will control the crane, with the last tipping the bed. Mostly baseless speculation of course but it's what I'm expecting And I am quite looking forward to seeing images of the Crawler Crane too. Interesting subject matter. Would I be right in thinking that at 1,401 pieces it is the largest non-flagship Technic set Lego have done? Because that could make for an interesting model.

    [TC5] Logging Loader

    Finally managed to borrow a better camera than using my phone this weekend, so I managed to get the photos done... This was as much inspired by 8443 as it was by machines like this one: And here's the result. I changed a couple of things from the LDD version, most notably the mounting points of the pneumatics (which I knew I'd have to change anyway). This photo show the steering better. The central rack and pinion axle turns dependent on the rear articulation, controlled by the exhaust stack. The rear axle has pendular suspension. And another pair of gratuitous shots: I'll add a post in the entry topic soon, I don't think I'll have time to do much else with it now

    Well, I got around to doing a quick build up of it. A few changes here and there to make things work properly.
  23. I do think there is steering on the front axle at least. Somebody earlier in the thread already put together an LDD mock-up I think which showed it should be possible. Looking at the box image, it's easy to to see a gap between the beams on the rear axle, so it looks like there is no steering there. I don't see why the two axles would be different if one of them didn't have steering.

    Thank you for the comments It'll probably be a little while till I get to build it with actual bricks, I guess we'll see how well the functions work out then - it will probably not be too difficult to make them work though. @Tomik: Not seen that model before, looks good though
  25. I've just finished up a quick sketch model in LDD using 8049, should get around to posting a topic and some images later tonight or tomorrow all being well. My only concern is that 8049 originally had extra parts included for motorization, and I'm a little unsure as to whether I have used any of them, because they disappeared into my spare parts collection a while ago and will be difficult to relocate
