  1. 20. Log Loader Here's my entry for the contest, built using parts only from 8049. You can find the original entry thread here. Features: Pneumatically lifted two-stage claw crane Worm screw operate claw Crane can be rotated via the light on the cabin roof Two-stage steering, with both articulated and rack-and-pinion steering - by turning the exhaust stack, the rear body articulates, while at the same time the rack-and-pinion on the central axle also turns, resulting in 3 different angles on each axle Pendular suspension on the rear axle Photos: Here you can see the mutli-angle steering: The rear axle suspension: And a few more shots: More photos can be found here
  2. Finally managed to borrow a better camera than using my phone this weekend, so I managed to get the photos done... This was as much inspired by 8443 as it was by machines like this one: And here's the result. I changed a couple of things from the LDD version, most notably the mounting points of the pneumatics (which I knew I'd have to change anyway). This photo show the steering better. The central rack and pinion axle turns dependent on the rear articulation, controlled by the exhaust stack. The rear axle has pendular suspension. And another pair of gratuitous shots: I'll add a post in the entry topic soon, I don't think I'll have time to do much else with it now
  3. Well, I got around to doing a quick build up of it. A few changes here and there to make things work properly.
  4. I do think there is steering on the front axle at least. Somebody earlier in the thread already put together an LDD mock-up I think which showed it should be possible. Looking at the box image, it's easy to to see a gap between the beams on the rear axle, so it looks like there is no steering there. I don't see why the two axles would be different if one of them didn't have steering.
  5. Thank you for the comments It'll probably be a little while till I get to build it with actual bricks, I guess we'll see how well the functions work out then - it will probably not be too difficult to make them work though. @Tomik: Not seen that model before, looks good though
  6. I've just finished up a quick sketch model in LDD using 8049, should get around to posting a topic and some images later tonight or tomorrow all being well. My only concern is that 8049 originally had extra parts included for motorization, and I'm a little unsure as to whether I have used any of them, because they disappeared into my spare parts collection a while ago and will be difficult to relocate
  7. Looking forward to seeing what we get out of this. I rather enjoyed the mini contest earlier this year and the limits on what you can use encourage a certain creativity. Think I'll have a bash at it myself actually
  8. I know the new Agents sets won't be of much interest to anyone here, but it almost looks like there is a pin bushing in one of the sets, like that one that appeared in 1995 for one year then mysteriously disappeared. You can see it on the Helicopter's crank at about 1.17 in the video: http://youtu.be/-_wr0jxn3I0 (Also, I dunno how to embed videos ) Edit by Jim: [m.e.d.i.a.]url without https, just http[/m.e.d.i.a.] (without the dots)
  9. Hmm. Unless I am much mistaken, that single-cylinder engine on the Mining Truck appears to be chain driven, interestingly enough.
  10. So there is, seems I missed that Still doesn't look like there will be room for a gearbox in there though... Also, 42035 is starting to grow on me, I do like its chunky sort of look.
  11. I might be in the minority but I don't think 42039 looks that bad. My biggest concern with it though is functionality; from these images it's not easy to see but it doesn't even appear to have a fake engine, though there looks to be a diff on the rear axle. If all it has is suspension and steering I'll pass, there are loads of Technic sets much cheaper that do the same thing. I quite like the Arctic Tracker though. I'm torn on the crane, as it's visually better than the prelim but still looks like it's too small for the model. And it's difficult to tell, but it looks like it could have steering and black treads, unless my eyes deceive me.
  12. I'm not sure, but on the prelim image of the compact loader, the right side upper white beam seems to be connected to the axle forks over the bucket, not connected directly to the bucket like in dokludi's replica. I guess that would allow you to use the two vertical 'control' axles on either side to close the forks and tilt the bucket independently. I am liking the look of the Arctic Tracker, but I hope the crane changes a bit before release. It kind of looks like an afterthought at the moment, and for such a large model I would hope to see more complexity rather than controlling the mini LAs directly on the crane arm.
  13. If 42039 Long Distance Race Car is indeed the 1h flagship, I wonder if it will go the route of 8070 in terms of functionality, or if they will actually put a proper gearbox in it. Some interesting sets here otherwise. I am very curious about the Arctic Tracked Vehicle. If we get another snow groomer then I'll be more than happy.

What other hobbies do you have?

For me, it's mostly gaming, guitar and reading/writing (mostly sci-fi and fantasy but I like a lot of other stuff too).
  15. Well, I finally got around to photographing the model properly. I was considering adding a second vehicle , but I didn't feel I could do it justice with the part count. Also, I feel this does kind of fit the Mini aesthetic/description better. That was also the first time I tried making a model look good in a photo... never had occasion to bother with an all-white background before, nor to use Photoshop to clean it up, not sure I did the best job And also my first physical contest entry, there are a lot of good entries in this contest so I hope it can stand up there with the rest
  16. 27. Front Loader Entry Name: Mini Front Loader Part Count: 103 Functions: Articulated steering via exhaust stack Bucket raising via knob at the back Bucket tilting via click hinge Promo Image: Parts Image: Entry Topic
  17. Well, I got around to building the real thing, and here it is: Final part count is 103, and it features articulated steering (controlled by the exhaust stack), raising bucket (with raised control at the rear, easily accessible), and dumping bucket via click hinge A comparison with actual Technic mini sets (the observant amongst you will notice I had to scavenge some parts... ): And of course, the obligatory parts photo:
  18. I just received Lego's summer catalogue and it has the summer 2014 sets in, though not available till August 1st. It also has the first image of 42029's b-model... it appears to have articulated steering and a simple claw arm crane on the rear, and some sort of plow blade on the front, using one of those 11x3 panels. Looking at it, it's fairly close to what rm8 posted above.
  19. The control knob shouldn't be too difficult to reach; I'll probably find a way to modify that in the next iteration. The cab was something I'd already noted, that sounds like a good solution EDIT: Here we go, version 2.0 Part count now stands at 103. The cab has been fixed more sturdily, and the control knob has been elevated 2 studs. The latter required a bit more structural change at the back than I anticipated, there was not enough room for 16t gears so instead it uses 8t gears. This will probably be the version I build, I just need to source the parts out of my collection (most of it is built up).
  20. This sounds like a great contest, will hopefully be able to enter something... I've already started designing something in LDD, but I have no doubt somebody else will probably enter something similar. All things considered, it would be slightly surprising if nobody did
  21. Great review, but just a point, the box is not the same as 42009 - that is a large square whereas this is a rectangular one I do like this model, but its functionality is too similar to 9396, which I have enough trouble finding a space to display as it is - so obviously the Cargo Plane is rather far down the list sets I still need to acquire.
  22. Hmm. Are you using extended mode or the normal LDD mode? It doesn't appear to be there in the normal build mode but it shows up in extended mode. You can use the search box to find the part by its number, 99781.
  23. Here's my entry, a Gothic mansion called Bat Wing Hall (because why not). Located on the shores of a vast, windswept lake, this ancient house has more than a few hidden secrets that its owner, Ally, prefers to keep to herself... Here we can see the front of the house; the left side of the mansion is perched upon a rocky outcrop. Hidden beneath the house is a cave, with a concealed jet ski, should a sneaky exit be needed... At the back of the house, a cutting in the rock leads from the garden down to the small beach. From this angle, you can also just about see another part of the hidden cellar beneath Bat Wing Hall on the right, with bars preventing entry. The top floor spans only part of the lower floor, leaving space for the main dining hall, which spans two floors. On the top floor, the front bedroom features a double bed and the usual furniture you'd expect; the rear bedroom features an immense four-poster bed, and a hidden sliding wall compartment... On the opposite side is the bathroom, with a large tub and a walk-in shower unit. Here, you can see the ground floor; on the left is the front living room, while behind it is Ally's study. On the right is Bat Wing Hall's rather infamous dining hall, which legend claims to have seen many mysterious disappearances over the centuries... the reason for this, of course, is the hidden passage behind the fireplace. This is an actual working feature - by turning the wheel to the left of the fireplace, the wall behind it raises, revealing a passage and ladder down to the hidden basement area. At the front of the dining hall is a set of steps leading to the rec room below, while at the other side is a door leading down to the kitchen. Here, you can see how the cellar is split into two separate areas... on the right is the rec room, and behind it, the kitchen, with a stairway leading up to the dining room. On the other side, however, is the hidden area only accessible through the secret passage behind the fireplace in the dining hall. The previously mentioned jet ski is here, along with Bat Wing Hall's most unnerving room - a hidden dungeon, with an adjacent cell (another working feature is built in here - in the floor above, behind the front door, is a lever, which when pulled back, opens the trapdoor beneath the entrance, dropping the unfortunate victim into the cell below - rather useful for getting rid of unwanted visitors). In the final main screenshot is a better view of the hidden area of the cellar. The cave exit is easier to see here. You can also see the pathway in the back garden which leads down to the lake. More screenshots (of which there are many) can be found here: Bat Wing Hall on Flickr. The .lxf file can be downloaded here via Brickshelf: Bat Wing Hall .LXF
  24. 7 years old this year actually. Time sure flies. Also, the Unimog would be fine for a 14 year old I should think, the recommended age range is 11-16 after all
