Three "woke" films later and we still lack a female X-Wing pilot
SteamSewnEmpire posted a topic in LEGO Star Wars
I don't get it. We've now had three consecutive roll-outs of Star Wars films being run by people who openly advocate for equality, and yet I still lack the upper torso necessary to create a female X-wing pilot in any generation of Star Wars. And yes, there are female pilot torsos out there (thereby setting a precedent). Note the Sandspeeder pilot's 'hip indentations' near the lower set of tan straps: The most obvious example I can think of that would make a suitable minifig is Jessika Pava from TFA, who turned out to be a bit of a sleeper fan favorite (I liked her <30 seconds of screen time more than anything we've seen from Rey over the course of 2+ films): She also appeared in Lego TFA (again note pretty the pretty clear female paint job): There have, of course, been other appearances of women wearing the orange jumpsuit (including some hard-to-spot cameos in Return of the Jedi, if you can believe that): Before you accuse me of being too anal for my own good, recall that Lego is the one who has been pushing differentiation of male/female minifigures for the past decade. I just feel let down that we've now seen the release of the TROS sets and this void still persists. -
[MOC] "War-Locomotive" DR BR 52 - Bricks-on-Rails
SteamSewnEmpire replied to Bricks-on-Rails's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Wow, I love your shaping, and the details on both the footplate and the coal hopper. Also very impressed by the low part count - all my engines wind up around 2000 pieces. How did you get the front window to angle in?- 6 replies

(ALTERED Moc) B-Wing E (expanded 2-person B-wing from EU)
SteamSewnEmpire posted a topic in LEGO Star Wars
*EDIT EDIT EDIT* Okay, so originally this was going to be the Galoob B-wing Action Fleet toy made in Lego... but... I really wasn't that satisfied with it. So I completely rebuilt the upper half and cockpit to turn it into a B-wing E from the Expanded Universe: the 2-person B-wing with enhanced tactical abilities (and slightly reduced fighter capability). I'm a lot happier with this result - it's sleeker, better-proportioned, and is based on a fairly obscure prototype that hasn't been built in Lego very much (if at all). -
6 or 8 stud wide trains, where do you think TLG is going for future sets?
SteamSewnEmpire replied to LegoDW's topic in LEGO Train Tech
As much as I'd like to think that 8w is the future (since it is far closer to scale than 6w), the fact is that Lego is generally averse to raising part counts for little tangible (or tangible in their eyes as it related to children) gain. -

Lol, first of all, Vader definitely does have a character - he's arguably the second-most important personality in all three films of the OT (an assertion that is supported simply by how much screen time is dedicated specifically to him). Moreover, I would argue that there are minor allusions to Vader's conflict even starting in Episode IV, particularly the line "you should not have come back." A ruthless killer filled with an unquenchable hatred would never utter words laced through with such melancholy. This conflict is dramatically expanded upon in Empire, where Vader first suggests turning Luke (in direct opposition - though it is never stated - to outright killing his son [which seems to have been the Emperor's initial ambition]). I would argue that Vader's desire to overthrow the Emperor ISN'T just based upon a Sith inclination to kill/inherit, but rather to shift the galaxy back towards some form of sanity (an sentiment he shared in urging Padme to join him in seizing the Republic, though he was a bit too drunk on power at that point to make it seem like anything but crazy talk). His unwillingness to finish the job with Luke when the younger Skywalker refuses to help ("he will join us or die"), and intervention to save Chewbacca (it doesn't matter if Vader wasn't trying to save Chewie specifically - he was attempting to prevent unnecessary loss of life) are further very strong examples. Did Lucas have a clear idea of where Vader's character was going (or his origins) while writing ANH? No. But he was clearly toying with some form of redemption for the character, which was greatly enhanced in Empire. So yeah, Vader DOES have a character and IS definitely struggling with some internal conflict throughout the OT. Please do not undersell the greatest screen villain in the history of cinema. Kylo Ren cannot hold a candle to his grandfather.

If the leaked script is correct, he apparently...

I was neither a child when I saw the PT, nor was I immensely critical (save for regarding Jar-Jar). I don't believe even for a moment that TLJ will see some kind of resuscitation given enough time.
-
Bashing modern Star Wars. I don't think there is a person in this forum who would dump on the OT; I believe there are very few (if any) who are openly hostile to this PT. But the fanbase is clearly split on Disney's take, so please stop acting like people who have a problem with the ST are just rogue outliers here to spoil the fun.

What's your recent LEGO Star Wars Purchase?
SteamSewnEmpire replied to KimT's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The green was the primary driver for my purchase, too :). -
Apparently the trailer synced up well with predictions by a prominent "leaker." If the rest of the movie follows suit, let's just say that Star Wars is screwed.

What's your recent LEGO Star Wars Purchase?
SteamSewnEmpire replied to KimT's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I bought the new A-Wing, largely because - in terms of scale - it is identical to traditional A-wings, and doesn't have any identifying Resistance features. As a result, I feel like it can effectively crossover to OT collections without any modifications. Plus, I love A-wings (who am I kidding? I love all the OT ships). I'm probably going to get the Y-wing, too, even though it doesn't translate nearly as smoothly. I think Lego really hit it out of the park in terms of the nose shaping, and the rest of it could probably be altered to a classic Y-wing's appearance for <30 pieces. -

I think Lego just says "we're going to do female torsos, and female torsos have boobs and hips." In all seriousness, I miss the days of asexual minifigure bodies. But now that Lego has established that there are differences between the two sexes, I want that dimorphism represented in my Star Wars pilots :P. -
If Rise of Skywalker fails/under performs, how would that affect LEGO?
SteamSewnEmpire replied to Lego David's topic in Culture & Multimedia
It's gotten away from what made Star Wars kid-friendly in the first place: enormous battles in exotic places, interesting aliens, cool (familiar) characters, impactful lightsaber fights, and movies that weren't a huge downer. Kids aren't stupid - I knew from about the age of 5 that ESB was the best Star Wars movie, and that didn't come from any adult input. It was just obvious that the combination of snow planet + Luke training with a funny, interesting chap like Yoda + asteroid field + Cloud City Vader fight were all really special (plus, we got to see a lot of Han Solo being an awesome pilot and cunning, seductive rogue). I might not have been old enough yet to appreciate that the narrative was just flat-out stronger than the other films, but that realization tagged along pretty quickly. Yes, the movie is "dark," but Luke's hand is quickly replicated with a more powerful cyborg replacement, which I frankly thought was awesome right off. By contrast, the new movies have very little alien influence (if Chewbacca playing with Porgs really counts then I'm a shoe), the planets are all kinds of has-beens (we've seen a desert world, a bit of a snow world, a "salt" world [that looks just like a snow world] and an Ireland world), there's almost no urgency or sentiment tied to the lightsaber duels, and the biggest emotional moments have been derived from killing off two beloved characters. No, kids probably aren't picking apart the dozens of ways that The Last Jedi let the entire series down in terms of plot holes, dropped story arcs, nonsensical narrative diversions, etc. (in the process actually damaging the Star Wars brand), but it doesn't matter, because the "hooks" aren't there to get them invested in the first place. I'm going to be really, REALLY shocked if TROS comes anywhere close to Disney's proclaimed hopes. Internally, my guess is they're in full panic mode (and probably preparing to spin this off as "the chauvinistic fanbase strikes again"). -

At least with the resistance, heads aren't an issue, since the visors are actual plastic now and you can throw on pretty much any female fleshy head (there are so many available from Harry Potter alone that I'd be fine). OT stuff is more difficult to replicate because of the printed visors... although I wonder if there will come a point when they drop that and just go with all resistance-style helms across both sources. -

SteamSewnEmpire replied to Lego David's topic in Culture & Multimedia
I really, REALLY dislike the new films, and still buy some of the Lego (I just picked up an A-Wing, even though I have no plans to see TROS). I think Star Wars Lego will be fine, even if you see a refocusing onto less controversial IPs (prequels/OT). -

Improving the 71044 Disney Train (WIP and Idea thread)
SteamSewnEmpire replied to Carefree_Dude's topic in LEGO Train Tech
It's a shame Lego couldn't simply do little things like these themselves prior to release. When you're talking about a high-dollar product of this order, it's really disappointing when this company cops out. -
Long ago - like 25 years ago - I built one for my city. I sure do miss that bridge.

I know I'm not the only person who likes Lego garbage trucks. These stinky vehicles - which I admittedly do pretty much everything possible to avoid IRL - for some reason really seem to transition well into this medium. And this probably helps explain why Lego has made a habit of releasing them once every 1-2 years (although, unfortunately, 2019's version is a Junior's set that more resembles a dump truck than something working for waste management). However, I'd argue that nothing Lego has ever done has come close to approaching this Lego ideas project: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/7d7f4e15-55e7-44c4-bb30-3a66b9cc0598 In my part of the world, these side-armed vehicles are now the "standard" garbage truck in residential areas. And, not only does this kid (or, at least, the person doing the narration on the video is a child; I'm pretty convinced the design is by an actual adult) properly nail the proportions of this machine, but the inner workings are bang-on, too. Normally, I try not to worry over Ideas stuff in general, but this submission really deserves to make it to 10k, and - at least by my estimate - it isn't going to get there in the next year unless word spreads. I have absolutely no connection to the truck's creator, but I'd like to own this one, so it would be nice to see people spread the word a little.

Awesome work. Feels like a deluxe version of a real set.
