[MOC] [INSTRUCTIONS] UCS Tantive IV - CR-90 Corvette

@ClassicLook Feel free to post your in-progress and other pics - it’ll get us all fired up again! :) I’ll try do some more interior work this week and get some renders done too. Looking forward to seeing more of the cr90 (or is it a 70?) in ep9 though, and not going to finish my tweaks till after that.

@Brick-Wombat thanks - most appreciated! @Kit Bricksto I still need to revisit the engines, but I just need to add two odd-LDU beams inside, and those should reduce their weight and also make them more robust. Even like that though, they aren’t as robust as yours so I might need to see if there are more technic pieces that I could buff up the interior with. Here is a very draft / highly broken / needs internal greebling of a rearranged interior (Leia’s corridor area is a few studs higher, so it will also have an extra reinforced framework underneath to support the bigger weight.) The inspiration for this was the new ISD UCS - Vader isn’t on the ISD!! So if he isn’t there... where else would he be? :) And some more pics (will add a few more onto here as the renders complete): https://imgur.com/a/hS0K5L7

Here's a quick update on the engine piping. It'll definitely have to be a soft 3mm hose that is used here, as the rigid and the soft flexible axle (received) are both too... rigid! Gallery: https://imgur.com/a/X0cuTbS You can see some other small tweaks - the smallest, but biggest is the increase of height / width of the engines by a small amount (a tile's amount I think), but that single tile is spread evenly above/below and sides of the engine. I think it is worth it (so far...), but this odd LDU stepping does cause the internal rigging to be much bigger than the originals. These contribute significantly to the new part count ... 8900 pieces ... will come back and review the internals at a later date ...

Does anyone know if it is possible get the flexible technic axles to sit in the same position, like I have on the engines here? Or am I wasting my time? No idea how posable they are. I’m thinking it *might* work if they are both tight and rotated / twisted at one end, to introduce torque to them. https://imgur.com/a/zgSScFi

@KristofOn the centre line, it’s just the first attempt - I’ll play around with it still. I can’t remember the name of piece I used in that pic, but I was mainly surprised it fitted reasonably well (though that big piece combined with the “eyebrows” and grill piece at the front being slightly offset, means I have three things needing rigged underneath... it’s painful). I’ll have a go at a a smoother centre line and come back here (edit: https://imgur.com/a/ubJ5HdM). Should be (is) much easier to rig it underneath I’ve also tried stepping heights of 4LDU and 6LDU (current is 8LDU I believe), to try and make the steps smaller, but instead use more steps (edit: some examples https://imgur.com/a/mnKGoio). That also doesn't really work, as it becomes very obviously blocky (at least on renders). I’m hitting walls a lot, but a bit of me is just going to buy bricks for all my main cockpit variants, and see how it goes. Edit 2: rotating gif with smooth centreline. https://imgur.com/a/MPO9P4s

[MOC] [INSTRUCTIONS] UCS Tantive IV - CR-90 Corvette

I totally agree with you - it is that much more blocky! From a certain angle though, it can work hehe. Here's kinda what it will look like, reattached to the main ship. https://imgur.com/a/dwXDajU Trying to get the cockpit angles a bit steeper ... I tried this to start with (stupidly referring to a piece of art where the cone was slightly curved)... https://imgur.com/a/oQppMuU. Then I tried doing this... https://imgur.com/a/nDk3w7W... but it looks more like Princess Leia with her bread-hair / a football. It would need significant rework, starting the cone further out at one of the curved red bits, and making the centre-line thinner too. All that is possible ... but the internal rigging alone would likely be even more frustrating (one of the pics shows the inside of the top of the cockpit at one time), and end up with no space for the minifigs inside. And it'll end up very stud-full, have plenty of tiny gaps, and look messy, which isn't in the same style as the rest of the ship. So I gave up. :) The corners for the windows were good fun though, and really easy in comparison - especially attaching it your version, your insides are clean & nice / have no internal rigging!

Very cool! I’m itching to get started properly, and will probably treat myself to it soon... In the meantime, still tweaking things. Here is an almost complete current version of the cockpit... I’ve tried many other other ways of brickbuilding cones, but given up on those designs, as they kinda work, but need a lot more work, and need a lot of internal rigging that compromise the insides.

I got all the bricks for the engine, and built it up, but the build-part of the project is currently stalled due to needing more components for lighting, wondering whether to really implement the landing gear (feedback welcomed), and some balancing tweaks I need to make because of other tweaks I made. I am going to give myself a deadline to finish it by end of January though, as any time later and my newly discovered twins will be born... and then all lego projects are off!!!

If anyone is using the LDD file instead of the instructions (I'm doing so, as only buying engines first, so need to make my own parts list etc), there is just one of these missing parts. If you are looking at the ship from behind, it's in the second from the bottom left's engine. Edit: I’ve added engine undercarriage doors that can open and close (it works in studio at least). The doors open differently to in in Clone Wars (“slide open”-ish vs turn open in clone wars), but I like this much better. I’ll add greebling to it and also build actual undercarriage that can will click on, as there won’t be space for it to actually retract. WIP: https://imgur.com/a/5o3o1xz Edit2: more landing gear pics. https://imgur.com/gallery/iZrAFDh Edit3: Gif uploaded https://imgur.com/gallery/VK1vO95 Edit4: front landing gear I am more than willing to hear any feedback on this. I've seen the vid from Clone Wars, and actually, that is a modded CR-70 I believe. This would also be a mod! :) But saying all that, if anyone can suggest any weight bearing alternatives, that would be great.

The engine instructions were good thanks. Yeah, I might need to change things a little for the lights. For example, I’m adding a 1x1 gap behind a 1 x 2 grill, in two inside-facing engine-panels in the middle row of engines (know where i mean?), then I can hide a red LED in those two engines. That hopefully should result in some nice discreet lighting, and if it looks terrible, they’ll never get used, and people won’t be able to see the grill gap. I ordered a Light My Bricks Tantive kit, and the plan is to retrofit it to your moc, but with less brash external lighting. I’ll find where the channels should be when it arrives They also have “NC Push” switches - switches that only turn on when a door is opened etc - and it would be pretty cool to put one or more in the four hinged panels in the engine block. One could turn on the engines, another the red leds I mentioned, and perhaps the other two toggle on lights at the front of the ship. Update: lights arrived. As expected, the 30cm long lights are not long enough. Will need to order a bunch of the smallest expansion boards and expansion cables. Will hold up the build. I tried one of the lights in an engine though, and it does indeed look cool. Been playing around in Stud.io with an aim to tone down the guns, and here is a current build in 5K (https://imgur.com/a/0foFuhP has current changes noted). :

All pieces of the engine now received (except for some small missing external parts which won’t hold up the build). Exciting times! Will post pictures in a few days. Edit: built the main engine block now. Now onto the rockets! edit2: nearing the end, I realise I should have ordered the small unattached pieces in the LDD file - now I know where they go!! Also, it’s a little fragile, so will get some MEK glue. First though, need to buy lights. Project, project, project! :) https://imgur.com/gallery/0hzPZEH

@bricksmarlin I’m only using Studio - I’m a complete noob at all this, and I initially used LDD, but also hated it. I really don’t know the pros and cons of the software though. In Studio it’s great though - much more intuitive. I’ve cut the Tantive into modules, and can easily open sections up as needed. Only limitation so far is the inability lty to do things like curve hoses - which I was thinking of doing around some of the engine cylinders. It’s also cheaper to do it this way (build electronically first) - my wife officially says I’m not buying any more lego any time soon! So it will be a while before I get to build anything except the engine block. That however will give me time to figure out perhaps where I’ll put lights in etc, and as I’ve raised the rear fuselage up 2 studs, I’ll think about putting some additional detail inside cheers chris

After creating a gif a few days ago, I realised that a potential display for this might be a rotating pedestal. That’s the only way I’ll get my wife to agree to putting it in the living or bed room! Then I got the itch to make the underside just as greebled as the topside! :) Guns are a bit big indeed. Not sure if I’ll keep them that way, but will create a few different versions for the end. It’s certainly good fun in studio eh? :) @bricksmarlin You’ll need to recreate your current Tantive IV collection too now!

Last post from me for a while. Will just update this with key new renders. https://imgur.com/gallery/gK6muTZ (low res, much better quality next link) https://www.dropbox.com/s/fkkgolbwwj42s4y/tantive iv quality gif.gif?dl=0 (40mb gif, won't upload elsewhere. Will do a movie version of it and youtube it or something instead, but will need another overnight run) Good quality static pic: https://imgur.com/a/2hfVUbF @Kit Bricksto I've made some small amendments as you'll see (perhaps not with the current resolution, but if you can see them, I hope you like them. :)

I love it in both. My guns are not quite inline with the movie though... but I will make several turrets that can be slotted in and out. I’ve ordered all the lego now for the engine block now (minus the pyramidal connector bit) so in a week or so I should have some pics to share!
