Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

FYI, In Western Canada, there was no gift with ordering the Boutique Hotel last night at midnight (which was 11:01 PM Dec 31 for us). I was able to order fast and easily -- the first non-issue I've had with ordering at "midnight" for a modular or any other order on January 1. It took my 45 seconds to get to the confirmation screen and another minute or so to get the order confirmation email in my inbox. When I saw that no Gift With Purchase was added to my basket, I was disappointed. But I decided to get two sets right out of the gate for the same reason others have mentioned: so I don't run into a lack of stock later in the month or in a few months. If this vintage taxi does turn out to be available at the end of January, and if it's a cool build like the teal car, I suspect there will be other sets I could buy at that point (perhaps the Daily Bugle which we'd like to modify and put in our neighbourhood). Also, this morning I woke to another email indicating my order has shipped and I already have a tracking number. I'm actually hopeful the kiddos and I might have the Boutique Hotel to build by next weekend.

It would be wonderful if LEGO finally created a modular that could actually be modularized with the purchase of more than one set — where the first floor and top floors of set #2 could be turned into a proper looking and functioning pair of middle floors for set #1. Then, a builder could buy a couple hotel sets and truly make as many rooms and bathrooms on as many floors as they want, without using loads of custom pieces.

Oh I think you're right that it is lavender and not sand purple. Wishful thinking on my part!

I dig what I see. I suspect it's legit. If it's a Jamie design, I can see that. Remnants of many of his buildings, including Detective's Office. I BET THERE'S A STORY ELEMENT. Oh and is that sand purple on the left building?

Hey gang, remember LAST YEAR at around this time when someone asked THE LEGO GROUP for a hint and their official Instagram said, "It sounds like the police." Anyone? Bueller?

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I like both, but they balance weirdly in most sets since the Parisian Restaurant. The Detective's Office is a shining example of how incomplete everything is in the 'apartment' and there are other examples. I often expand them to include more that should have/could have had. For example, my DO has a very full luxury apartment for the woman in red to occupy and I gave her a back story that she is a retired Hollywood starlet who moved to a smaller city to live relatively modestly off the royalties from her movies. I've said this for a few years so forgive me if it's annoying repetition. But I think a cool way to deploy the modulars would be to basically have the building on its own, maybe with a few interior details and a few minifigs in the box. Then Lego could release a suite of smaller sets and poly-bags that are designed when the modular is designed. An instruction sheet/booklet would show how to add them to this year's modular or build it as a stand-alone. One 80-piece set is the apartment kitchen furnishings. Another comprises the ensuite bathroom and furniture for the master bedroom. One poly bag might have the pieces to basically stock the convenience store shelves. So the tow truck for the Corner Garage might be a separate City or Creator set that is perfectly designed to fit and work with that modular, fit inside the garage, etc. This would address the balance issue between play/interior/exterior. It would allow more detailing on the architecture of the building, but allow those who like the play features and interiors to scale them up. It would truly make them 'modular'.

Since Cafe Corner is long retired, it feels like LEGO doesn’t consider it an active part of the modular neighbourhood and I doubt they would mind having a new building repeat some of the same uses. Look at Parisian Restaurant and Downtown Diner. Also, if they were looking to reduce the size, it could be a Bed and Breakfast with one or two simple rooms instead of several that would be expected of something labeled a ‘hotel’. What might be fun would be a ‘Highrise Hotel’ set that truly makes it easy to buy two or three sets and add storeys upon storeys — but not like most modulars that really only let you stack middle storeys up.

I think the car might be the (only?) (best?) clue we have at the moment. Your idea for a car dealership is good — since we know the designers tried to make one before morphing it into the Diner. Some of my ideas tied to that 50s convertible are a building at the beach, like maybe a hotel, a dance hall...or a record shop. I guessed a record shop last year when LEGO posted on Instagram that their hint for the next modular was “Sounds like The Police.” Still not sure how that hint played out with any of the sets we got released. ? Also, not sure it’s been made clear that the car will be included. Maybe it will be a polybag or a giveaway for Lego club members.

Here's the winner from the contest to design a car for (I presume) the next modular building. Since THE LEGO GROUP's Creator Expert team ultimately decided which vehicle design from the pool of top vote-getters is the ultimate winner, maybe this car can give us some clues as to what sort of building we might see. Thoughts? http://ideas.lego.com/challenges/bafd4186-bb49-4eb0-903f-910415f04391/application/5be7f2a0-e87b-46c3-8257-51e725e60d9f

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

The last few modulars seem to be a bit of a reboot to the line, for lack of a better word. A few have tried to create new quasi-copies of the most successful, albeit retired models. Since Bookshop is kind of a reboot of Pet Shop (structure and use-wise) and Downtown Diner is almost a reboot of Parisian Restaurant’s use and structure, a courthouse isn’t a bad idea to follow up the Town Hall. Not sure if it’s too early for another corner building, but a single-use Corner Courthouse made primarily of sand red profile bricks would be a pretty cool addition to my neighbourhood.

I have been hoping for sand red to come back for the last several modulars. I doubt this is the year, but I can throw my ridiculous wish in with everyone else’s!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

As much as I understand why THE LEGO GROUP is striving to control leaks and announce sets extremely close to their launch, I miss the build up of anticipation for sets like The Parisian Restaurant. But with all the pirates out there, stealing Lego’s IP, I get why they let it go down to the wire before official announcements. However, I think it would be fun for the company to release hints as to the type or theme of the new modular, or even tiny puzzle-piece corner images of a section of the new modular. Waiting until December is tough! On a side note, is anyone here going to adapt the recent Diagon Alley set into modular buildings? May be an unpopular opinion among Potter fans but each building would make a good modular — except for the pink one! The building is great but I’d swap out the pink bricks for another colour.

I see the Wikipedia entry for the 'police station' modular has been deleted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Modular_Buildings

I dig that the 'short name' for this modular book shop will be 'The B.S." ;)

Don't know about everyone else, but I've ordered my CORNER GARAGE. Can't wait to build it out of the box, then mod it! Happy New (LEGO) Year, everyone!
