    Avalonia Mini-Challenge: Game of Thrones

Honestly I am not picky. I enjoy the idea of more builds happening vs less being built. We are here after all to see builds happen or to build ourselves.

    Avalonia Mini-Challenge: Game of Thrones

Very sorry I was not able to participate in this challenge just a busy time for us. The reality is I made my peace knowing I couldn't enter all things. But happy to pull my duty and vote. Votes below: @derEselausErgste @Henjin_Quilones @ Grover Carry on fellow avalonians
  6. In remote western Avalonia, a valley long untouched by any politics or happenings outside of daily survival Niall scans the valley. This place is just as I remember it. It will work perfectly he thought to himself. He turned to his companion "Kimee do you agree it will work?" He asked quietly. “With a lot of hard work and likely most of what we acquired in our travels it should be possible” she reassured him. And with that Niall shouted for Tem. “I have a favor for you my friend before we put down our own roots here. I need you to take a horse and go back to the farms in the countryside and to the hamlet where that trader fellow Lorin resided. Give him these letters and spread the word that in 2 weeks time there will be free bread, fish and soup being handed out to anyone who will join us and hear my words. Promise them flour to take back home and safety with us just to hear our proposal. Do this and hurry back. The last letter there is for Lorin only it has a list of everything we will need to be here in 2 weeks time. Tell him to not be late and there will be something extra waiting.” Tem set off immediately on his errand. 2 weeks had come to pass. Lorin had done his part and the supplies had arrived, bags of flour, crates of travel bread, salted fish and food for the soup had all been sorted. The soup was cooking already and the spices filled the air. Niall thought by now he would have seen people. The promise of free food in these hard times was not a small offer. As the late morning sun began to climb in the sky, he began to worry his message did not reach enough ears. He shielded his eyes from the sun with his hand and stared down the rugged makeshift path one more time that led to the valley. Was that movement down the way? He squinted hard, yes there were shapes walking down the road. One, two, he stopped counting. There were many all walking together. He should have known they would show up at once. Safer to travel in groups, slower but safer. They lined up for the food and the free bags of flour. Tem entertained the kids with his songs of adventures and intrigue. He even showed a little slight of hand here and there so a coin or two could find their way to the kids pockets. https://flic.kr/p/2eoSTVA The people had come to hear Niall's offer of safety, protection from bandits, wildlife, drow and the hardships that have always been part of living in an area that seemed long forgotten by the Lords of Avalonia. He promised work for those with skills and fair wages and land for those to farm who would grow crops. For anyone without skills there would be no shortage of labour in the coming years. The folks who came to hear the message did not run or laugh as he feared. They listened, asked questions and talked amongst themselves. And so the families spent the evening under the stars while Niall and his companions took turns standing watch. The people all departed at first light. A few promising to return, others wanting time to consider. Niall had only asked them for one thing. To speak of this meeting to anyone who would listen and to extend the same offer and give a letter to anyone interested. They had agreed saying it was the least they could do for the flour. With the promise of some folks to arrive in the coming weeks the next matter to combat was the security of anyone who would show up. His party could do so for smaller numbers in this area of the valley. But what if the numbers became too many or too fast? Should something befall any of the families the rest would be sure to flee. He would need to attract those that could shoot a bow, or swing a piece of steel. Or at the very least entice those willing to learn to help defend the area from everything from wildlife to bandits. Niall stared at his friend Boralis; “Do you think our luck will hold my friend if we promised food and coin to anyone willing to give us their fealty and help protect this valley?” The older man almost spit out his ale. “These last few years you think had anything to do with luck boy! People are drawn to you like flies to…” he did not finish his sentence. “If they come as you suggest will you help train them though?” Niall looked at his friend intently waiting for a sign he would balk from the task. “Boy, I told you I would follow you. Build me a house with a warm fire and plenty of wine and I will train anyone who takes your money. The chance to bruise a few green lads knuckles never fails to make me smile either” So it was settled. Word would be sent with trader Lorin. Weapons and further provisions would be secured. The offer of pay and food to anyone who had any skill with a bow, blade or knife or a desire to learn. A contest would be had on the last festive weekend of the month. Purses for the best marksman, axe thrower and winners of the melee would be offered to entice those that were less desperate for coin and that already knew to handle a weapon. And come they did, more than he expected these isolated lands would produce. And so began an age of rebuilding in the remote corner of Avalonia

Excited for this. My entry may be a bit of a twist but either way looking forward to how this plays out.

Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

When and how do the freebuild periods work. When is the next one. Are they just for fun or are they scored and count for points within the guild or for the guild? If they are scored can they be used towards guild tasks as well as freebuild scoring or is it one or the other. If there is a forum or place to read up on this I think I have missed the details. Thanks

Welcome @derEselausErgste good to see another fellow new face. Happy building. I hear Avalonia is the best around if rumors be true. Hopefully we both chose wisely.

Challenge II: Category A: Bread in the Valley

These are my first ever mocs. All my inspiration comes from here or Flickr. Although I have officially gone through 260 pages of Historica forum pages and I realize most of what is on Flickr is from here and vice versa. But yes my inspiration I try to recreate from photos and may add a twist if it presents itself. But I would like to try my hand at learning several techniques before adding too many of my own twists. Hoping that is the evolution of things though. I managed to read through the GoH official lorebook as well so I am not shy of research.

Challenge II: Category A: Bread in the Valley

Ah Basiliscus. His story will be told in time. My sigfig was recently introduced as a farmer in Avalonia but his story began in Book 2 and has not been told in written or lego format yet. My goal is to allow his story to unfold in freebuilds/guild challenges for his past while allowing his present day story to unfold in the challenges.

Challenge II: Category A: Bread in the Valley

Thanks for the feedback on the border. I felt like it needed a border but it is one of those areas that I had no clue where to go with it. Keeping it all 1 color makes sense and so does keeping it a color that is not in the scene. Really appreciate the feedback there as it will help me the next time around. Thanks Muakhah for the pointers. I tried to keep the ground texture simple for fig placement. It is also one of the areas that I struggle with for inspiration and have no practice in. As a result I took this time to allow my 7 year old to help in placing and choosing some of the ground texture pieces as he was hovering over my shoulder and was taking an interest in my building and I wanted to encourage that interest as it is part of my decision to begin building more. Would you have any recommendations on guides or tutorials to different ground texture techniques? But yes this area was meant to be a small clearing allowing a camp to exist and a small gathering to occur. Hi Grover. Yes this is probably going to be just as large of a journey for me as the building. Photography is not my strong suit. Again if there are any guides out there for lego photography I would be glad to read them. I have bright lighting in my building room but I noticed shadows when I was trying to take photos. I will likely invest in an all white background at some point or possibly a few solid colors. But honestly photography will be my short coming so any feedback on how to improve this is welcome. I can do trial and error as well but I found getting the right angles, distances etc a challenge. And I have noticed that photography of displays can really make or bring out the story.

My first MoC posting. Starting with challenge 2. Takes place in present day for my character. Will jump to the back story slowly over the book. Comments and advice welcome. Let me know if the links and images show up correctly as I am not sure how to post the Flickr images from a mobile device.

Thank you. I am going to attempt to get one of the smaller challenges done before the end of January hits. Then I hope to do the intro to my story next month and finish the build that I used as the back drop.

Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Just introducing my sig fig. No title at this point just a commoner/farmer. His story will be told in time as it takes place during book II and book III. Name: Niall O'Connall. Age. 17 (this is the age where his story begins. He would be closer to 20 by this point in book 3) Hails from: Remote Avalonian farm in western Avalonia. South of Burrium and NE of Helenia although its exact location is not well known as the local farms and small hamlets have long been left off any well known maps. Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Thanks for the feedback. My building time is limited so if I can begin working on my town/city diorama as well as content for my characters story whether that content reflects past present or future ideas it becomes the ideal situation. So when I see a challenge I instantly think, how can I progress or provide content for my story/town/landscape while also meeting the challenge needs. That also really helps to focus my thoughts on what I want to showcase and how.

Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Thanks Henjin. I have enjoyed the stories which have led me to formulate my own. What will be unique with my story is the need to introduce characters and scenes vaguely in order to participate in contests while the full story is worked on in a more linear fashion in the back ground. So participating in a contest now may result in a vague scene, no back story as the image is set in a scene where my character is going to end up but far from where he starts. Or it may show acquaintances without backstory as these friends and comrades have not met yet. Would this be too out of context to participate in the challenges? My goal would be to tie said scene I portray in a challenge to at least make it fit the current timeline that is unfolding. It may just be achieving this by not fully immersing my story with the current events. But parallel to those events. Let me know if this kind of story telling and contest entries are acceptable before I go too far down that path. It is the only way I can think of to create a story while participating in the current book 3 at the same time.

Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

So my quick apologies for not getting to this sooner. I meant to join Avalonia towards the end of book 2. Life got in the way, young kids and lengthy home renovations forced the lego into storage. Renovations are now close to completion and with it comes the addition of the full sized lego room allowing me to begin my journey into building. I would say I am a collector first and a beginner builder second, but the dream has always been to collect enough to build large scale. Anyone else have those ideas books in the 90's of castles and realize they never had enough cool pieces to build any castles the same size? Anyways, hopefully tonight if not this week I will introduce my sig fig. I likely will not be able to get too into the challenges until later in the year or winter. My sig fig's story will focus likely on a story that I hope does not clash with lore from book 1 or 2. So feedback on that when it happens is welcome. I am also extremely green with eurobricks forums and flickr so you may look for many questions about posting, where to post, where to find correct challenges and building tasks so I can make past, present and future building plans. My room is being setup to accommodate a large scale town/city diorama which has been the plan since before I found Historica. I will be using Historica to focus my ideas and to gain ideas and feedback and to challenge my green abilities. Look forward to posting soon. Question 1. How do you upload an avatar or photo on here the easiest?
  20. Is there a secret part list with part numbers out there somewhere?

Thanks Henjin. I will introduce him this week then. He is already built just his story will affect his appears fairly early on in his story development but I see no harm in introducing him early and being vague about his intro. Cheers

Looking to claim the following area in Avalonia. Claimed as "Riin" Please let me know if any issues and if the photo is clear. My paint skills are not strong. The dot off the coast was me claiming the spec of an island as part of; if allowed. https://www.flickr.com/gp/150574863@N04/4NW3LS

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

From my reading I am sensing GoH is on the verge of the ending of book 2. Is it okay to still claim land with the current map as is as well as to consider a contribution to the capital map etc in the near future or is it best to wait until book 3 for those specific things?

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Thank you for this. I familiarized myself with Avalonia's back story but not the other factions. If the Lion Knight is in direct conflict I will have to get creative then and tweak my final plan a bit but this helps thanks
