From a realistic perspective those station modules make absolutely no sense, since the floor of each module would be where the outside wall airlock is, but from a play/fun perspective this is a real cool set/series and will be a must buy for my son and I (just like the recent lunar and mars stations).

All fine and well, but I think you should have mentioned you photoshopped out the white and grey parting line between the first and second floors. Are the parts all available to even do that IRL without major modifications? That said, I do like that look without the parting line, since I've always felt the strong color line has been one of the things about the modulars that I've felt should be used only occasionally, and not on every building. Personally, I'd think about getting rid of the brown line at the center of the windows on the 2nd floor too. -

My take is that they were thinking that since Lego usually releases the modular in January, it would be cool if the museum were to not be the regular modular, but a special one to replace AS, and that on January 1st everyone would wake up to find the actual annual modular released, and without any spoilers having been leaked! Surprise! -

A tablesaw and fine blade for plastics will easily fix that issue and actually give you 2 for 1. Some fine grit sand paper for the edge and some buffing compound would take care of the sharp edges too. Not recommending this, but it can be done if you don't care about offending purists or destroying the road plate's value. On one white Ikea bookcase where I display my modulars for a few months before taking them back apart (I don't have an actual city), I just used a black shelf and cut non-glossy decals for the road details to match the general Lego style instead of using road plates. This also allowed me to fit everything to wider cars and trucks, and add other road details as desired. This is an older deep style Billy bookcase, not the regular depth one, so not sure how this would work on the regular shelves (I think deep might still be available in birch?). For modulars I display elsewhere I use mils plates and the new road system. -

Oh, I really like that truck. When I heard about it I was thinking "Really"? So I am pleasantly surprised. As to the museum itself, I'm actually pretty lukewarm on it so far. Maybe I'll like it better in a few days after letting it bounce around in my head for a bit. I love olive green, but it seems out of place to me on this building. The museum seems short compared to the other modulars shown, especially since it is so much wider. There also seem to be a number of short cuts or things lacking too (though nothing like the lack of books in a bookstore!). Builds like the skeleton seem quite lacking compared to one's we've gotten before (Ideas, not the tan T-Rex), even though the piece count seems reasonably close to one of the individual skeletons from the Ideas set. Seems like fitting one of the Ideas skeletons in place of the brachiosaurus might end up being a huge mod. This would have been a great place to add a metallic silver Mercury astronaut type suit to go along with the "orrery". Since I like to mod my modulars, I'm sure I'll figure out how to bring this set into line with my preferences and desires, and like with JC it may mean an exterior recolor, but maybe just trim and roof colors this time instead of the walls, we'll just have to see. Also, one of the first things that came to mind when I saw the roof office was to turn it into a small observatory dome. I do have 3 Friends Botanical Garden sets that I had fun modding, might be fun to see if I can successfully turn that into a conservatory wing that matches the museum's style. Maybe an "L" shape with the conservatory going towards the street and adding a large plaza in front of the museum entry. -

Anyone else notice that the Bookstore and AS don't say Retiring Soon anymore on the US website (haven't checked other countries), but the Police Station says Last Chance? -
They were supposed to be frozen in the ice, and being recovered by the explorers. Of course, since Lego designed these sets for kids they made the animals look vibrant and alive, not withered and dead. I guess there is a difference between real death and monster/zombie/spooky death.

I can't think about placement right now to help you (working right now), but I wanted to remind you that you can put the 2 halves of Bookshop in different locations if that helps make things work better. As I was recommending above last year, I also have no problem with building something backwards from the instructions (mirroring) if that helps things fit better too (nor mod the heck out of them, but that's a whole different issue).

Buy Assembly Square and don't open it. If it is too similar to the new modular in your opinion when we finally get details on it, you could always sell your copy of Assembly Square for a profit after retirement to pay for the new modular. -

Lot of Friends sets listed as Last Chance. I'm picking up the one with the giraffe and zebra for the animals in case I need those animals. While Friends animals are often too "cutesy" for my non-Friends builds, I've found that I can often position them so that the eyes don't stand out too much if I need to. -
Well, there is an off brand product out there that have redone Palace Cinema and Brick Bank that appear to be dystopian/abandoned buildings in different colors than original. Wouldn't recommend them for obvious reasons, but if you want/need something like that and are unable to MOC...

In the US only the Police Station has a Last Chance label. This happened yesterday. AS and Bookstore still show as Hard to Find. -
You can always burn down one of your existing modulars. Somewhere around there is a great build of the Palace Cinema where the building is burned and boarded up. I have pics of it in my moc folder. edit - here is a link: I think there was another one too. I'll see if I can find it.

Living almost all my life in the PNW (not Seattle), I've never heard Seattle called the "Rain City". Yes, it gets a lot of rain (twice as much as Portland), and everyone complains about it in both cities, but Seattle is the "Emerald City". I do like your ideas about a seafood market with printed water tiles and raincoats though!!! No need for a coffee shop too, just a fresh seafood market with seafood restaurant (or maybe a bait shop or aquarium fish shop as a secondary instead of a restaurant?) would suffice.

If/when that half round is available in silver it'll open up a lot of uses. I can think of several greebling uses immediately. Great build!!!

Wow, not sure how I missed this thread until now. The Parisian Restaurant used to be my favorite, but the Boutique Hotel overtook it. I recently just rebuilt both at the same time (I don't display my modulars), and the choice was easy. Parisian Restaurant is great though. It sat at the top for a long time. AS is great too, but even though it is simpler, there is just something about the Brick Bank that I love, so it sits third for me just ahead of AS. 1. Boutique Hotel 2. Parisian Restaurant 3. Brick Bank 4. Assembly Square 5. Corner Garage 6. Downtown Diner 7. Palace Cinema 8. Police Station 9. Detective's Office 10. Grand Emporium. Then all the rest in no particular order. Mostly I guess I prefer buildings that lend themselves to expansion or changing up the usage (like putting an auto parts store above the garage, and a parts warehouse above that).

How to blend baseplate roads with MILS plates

One solution I've seen is to build a shorter mils plate to set the road plate on top of in order to raise it up. Depending upon how much curb you want showing, you could use one 2x2 plate with a 2x2 tile on top to raise it 2 studs. If this new mils "road plate" is on the edge of your city you can add a one stud wide border "curb" on the outside to hide the mils system and keep the road plate in place. Then just tile the 6 studs that are showing on the road plate to however you want that area to be used in your city, whether as parking, bike lane, wider sidewalk, or greenery. If you want the road plate at a different height, just use an additional plate or no plate to get the height you want. The only issue with this method is connection points to your other mils plates. You could tie the two mils plates together with a 2x4 or 2x6 plate in between the pillars instead of using pin connectors in this case. -

To be in the $100 price range I can't see it being anything close to the scale of the Fishing Store. My guess would be that one of the past Friends winter sets might be a better comparison. My new Winter Village moc for this year is going to be a hot chocolate brewery, complete with tanks and whatnot, and I think one of those tanks will be developing a leak. Will likely include a drinking area for Minors Only. -

Friends sets are often too good to pass up, and since no one in our household likes them, I save the figures up until I have a lot of 50 to put on eBay with no reserve. The big lots often sell for a decent amount, and I hope whoever buys them has fun with them.
