  1. "Ha, I knew I would find you around some books!" Reinhard looked up from his read, to quickly recognise an old friend: "Harold, what a surprise! How did you make it over here, and more importantly: how did you find me?!" Harold replied: "You know the last time we worked together, on that expedition to Pan and Salleek? It must have been what, five years ago? We were well payed, as usual. It was an exciting enterprise, as usual. I felt somewhat unsatisified at the end though, which was very unusual. I can still not say what it was in detail, but I felt like I had to try something fresh, something new. Long story short: I made it to the colonies, and have never looked back since then. As we speak, my workers are busy at the docks unloading yet another ship, with me being the head of a small but profitable trading business. It turned out I am a much better merchant than explorer!" "That is all fine and dandy Harold, but how did you get to me tonight, and by the way, what is that sheet of paper in your hand?" "That is the Reinhard I remember, on spot and impatient at all times! As I tried to explain: I have a business at the docks, and naturally have my eyes and ears in quite a few places. When some of my men told me about a Royal Flagship in the port a few weeks ago, with a grumpy passenger talking the way only you would do... what did you think I would do? Of course I recognised it was you, and had some of my people look out for you. Tonight I finally had the time to follow you myself, and here you are: books around you, and what a mess you have made of the place!" "Bah, humbug! It is not my fault these new-worlders keep their libraries without any sensible order. I merely tried to educate myself on the plants and crops of the Terra Nova, but it seems to be really difficult to have it all in one place. I might have to find out more about the matter myself in, you know, field studies." "As for the paper in my hands: it is one of our local newspapers. The quality of the journalism is somewhat questionable - the writers seem to enjoy their local rum a good bit too much - but it still gives you a good overview of things happening all over Terra Nova. I thought you might find it interesting." "Oleanders and writing? Are they not too busy worshipping a sack of rice or something? I will have a look at it though, even fake news can make for a good read sometimes. But enough of this, I am happy to see you again. Given the lack of information in theses scriptures, I am afraid it might not be for too long. Where do you think I should look first if I want to get some more entries on this list of mine?" "And here I thought you would like to have a drink or two before heading off for yet another exploration. I should have known better! But well, since you asked: the captain of the ship that brought you here is about to head for the settlement of Weelond tomorrow. As far as I know, he wishes to enjoy a festivity known as "Oktobearfeast", even if I am not aware that there are bears on An Holi. For what it is worth: you might enjoy the opportunity for cultural studies, as well as the local wildlife. I was told their mission was for King's Port on Cocovia shortly after this, where you might find more plants to study. There is also a major constructionwork of the Crown going on, you might want to have a look into that." "That sounds interesting indeed. You know what? I will do it just as you said it. I have not even spent a month in this town, and already feel unsinspired. New havens it is what I am looking for! I can not by any chance move you to join me?" "No, my old friend. I have business to do here, and I also feel like my adventurous times are over. You can always rely on me here in Arlinsport, but I will stay here and build on what I have achieved so far." "So be it then. It was a pleasure seeing ou again. I guess it will not be the last time." ======================================================================================= This build (small education) is supposed to be part of a library and/or lecture room in Arlinsport. The story above tries to expand on Reinhards origin story and set up the direction for the next weeks - enough said! More pictures, including shots of the furnitures on its own and the "naked" room:

    [COR] By the books?

Glad you like it! I don't remember where I have seen that book build, but it is not of my creation.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I would love a small hint towards their 60th anniversary, not a big show-off. Like a small street level shop selling... a wooden duck toy. Everybody would get the reference, but the rest of the modular would still be free for another concept.

    [POLL] WTC Elites

I do not think elite units have to look overly fancy. Yes, it is fitting for the time period the BotBS is imitating. Troops had to be easily identified on large-scale battlefields of yesteryear, so distinguishing the elites by serious bling was a good idea. But "commando style" units - which I think the WTC Elites are supposed to be - can (and often should) look almost identical to regular troops. Some additional equipment and better weapons is all you really need. Personally, I would prefer the "badass version". If you want to include some more comedy elements, you can either make their captain a clown, or let some regular troops do that job.
  5. Glad I asked first, an interesting discussion. Artisan it is then. I'm not looking for the "best bonus", but for the most fitting category.
  6. I think both could work for a doctor, while I feel both are not that good a match for a fire brigade. I guess I will include some scene where the fire fighters lecture a local or some kids, and call it an educational building - I really do not see them as artisans!
  7. Aaaand next one: what category do things like doctors or fire brigades belong to?

    [OL-FB] An old two-decker

Wow! What an impressive and beautiful ship! I wish I had both the skill and the parts to build something like that, but alas, I do have not. Oleon is building up quite a fleet...

[COR] A fine day in Tellvok

A nice little scene indeed. One thing that irritates me is the pink thing (sticker?), it really detracts from the overall great look.

    The BotBS Plants Index

Sure, why not? Apart from a comprehensive index, this is also meant to be a collection of building ideas and techniques - something the premade Lego animals do not need. But I can see a use for a collection of brickbuild animals, which can be tricky. I do not have the time for another index though. As for buildings: in my opinion a Google search for a given concept often enough does the job. I think I understand your point, but disagree. Let me explain why I do it the way I do it. The main reason for reposting is my inability to edit other peoples posts. That would be different if I was a mod on these boards - which I do not want to be. So to keep the index entries in the same style, and to update them whenever needed, each entry has to be under "my authority" in terms of user rights. It would be possible to let each contributor edit their entries as needed, but a lot of PM back and forth would be needed - an unnecessary process in my opinion. The redundancy by multiple posts with (almost) the same content is only an issue for a consecutive read-through of this thread. If you use it as intended - opening the OP, click the link for what you are interested in, read that post - there is no redundancy. In terms of in-thread discussion it is - again, in my opinion - merely an issue of scrolling over a "double post". I decided against one "monster post" full of all entries, because it would make finding specific things more difficult. You can link to specific posts in a thread, but not specific parts of a certain posts. This means that in a "monster post" you would have to scroll through a lot of text to get to the one point of interest for you. The way it is done now does not have this problem. I hope this clears things up. I'm open for further discussion, but please understand that in this thread I will keep it the way I started it.

Nothing divine about these liquids. Just good old-fasioned craftsmenship in the brewery and distillery business. Which Corrington excells at.

    [POLL] WTC Elites

Hmm, I guess plain brown pants could go both ways. Either by adding uniformity, or by looking too monotonous. I think what way you see it is a very personal thing. The poll clearly favours the brown pants, so there is that.

    [POLL] WTC Elites

From the given examples, I prefer the plain brown legs. Do you have some comparison pictures with the "regular" troops?
  18. Two questions concerning licensed plantations: Do plantations have to be "pure", or can the be "mixed"? By a "mixed plantation" I mean something like a little farm, growing different things (e.g. potatoes, onions, some apple trees, some pigs, some chicken). Or does it have to be "one crop only"? This one is a bit more gamey. Does a MOC for a build have to exist in its entirety at a given time, or can I build it in stages, make pictures of each stage and only present the pictures as a result? As an example, take a medium plantation, and somebod who has enough parts to fill one 32x32 plate. Instead of one build for a small plantation, there are four different arrangements on that one plate, all photographed once finished, and then deconstructed for the next build. At no time is there a full 64x64 build, but there are pictures of four different 32x32 builds. Can that count as a medium plantation? Asking for a friend...

    The BotBS Plants Index

[Example of a small potato plantation] Name: Potato (Solanum Tuberosum) IC background: The potato has a mostly unknown background. Thought to have been brought over from natives in the Easter Islands in the very early colonial period, potatoes have become the staple diet of many countries, most notably Corrington. A prominent family in the world of potatoes is Clan Spud, of course, 'spud' being vernacular for 'potato'. This Northern-dwelling clan in Corrington has built up estates of potato farms and are now seeking to expand these plots eastwards in the name of Her Majesty. OOC background: The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum. The word "potato" may refer either to the plant itself or to the edible tuber. In the Andes, where the species is indigenous, some other closely related species are cultivated. Potatoes were introduced to Europe in the second half of the 16th century by the Spanish. In 1845, a plant disease known as late blight, caused by the fungus-like oomycete Phytophthora infestans, spread rapidly through the poorer communities of western Ireland as well as parts of the Scottish Highlands, resulting in the crop failures that led to the Great Irish Famine. On Wikipedia, both the main article about potatoes as well as a seperate article about the history of the potato are worth reading. Name: Cacao Tree (Theobroma Cacao) IC background: The cacao tree is famous for producing cocoa beans, which of course are in turn used to produce chocolate. The trees grow in abundance on the island of Cocovia in the Sea of Thieves and Corlander entrepreneurs refined the bitter tasting drink that the natives of that place made from the fermented beans into the sweet treat that is so famous across the Brick Seas today. For more IC background, check Ayrlegos excellent cocoa plantation (link also below). OOC background: Theobroma cacao, also called the cacao tree and the cocoa tree, is a small (4–8 m (13–26 ft) tall) evergreen tree in the family Malvaceae, native to the deep tropical regions of Central and South America. Its seeds, cocoa beans, are used to make cocoa mass, cocoa powder, confectionery, ganache and chocolate. To find out more, check Wikipedia. Especially interesting are the sections about the history of cultivation and the mythology around cacao. Name: Apple (Malus Domestica) IC background: Even though not the best fruit to grow in a tropical climate, it is common to see apple orchards in many Eslandola settlements because of the main activity of the MAESTRO Trade Company. It is said it was Felipe de la Manzana who introduced the old world fruit in Nellisa and then in Berelli to secure some jungle areas. Now, the MAESTRO Company is developping its activity and even far settlements like Trador are hosting apple orchards. OOC Background: 3rd fruit to be eaten in the world, 1st fruit in France, the apple is mainly associated to the forbidden fruit the snake offered to Adam and Eve in the Genesis. This fruit is mainly associated to the Original Sin. For a less mythological approach, there are actually two Wikipedia articles worth reading: one gives a good overview of the biology of different apple species, another one deals with the cultivated fruit, including sections about history, culture and myths - and of course cultivation! Apples are also the raw material for cider - again, the Wikipedia article includes local variations and festivities related to cider. The Eltina Courrier - October 617AE (AMRCA)

An excellent read, and a great summary of current events. Keep it coming! P.S.: Any way this can be supported by some builds?
