[COR - FB] Close encounters
Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I guess not being captured counts as continuation, so thanks! Thank you! I work with what I've got. I'm not sure that hairpiece is particularly orderly, but it's the best I've got. Sadly I have no LotR/Hobbit sets, I just bought the torsos from Bricklink. Yeah, I had an idea for what it would look like, but when I started building I quickly ran out of parts. To be honest I'm a bit disappointed, but the story had to go on. Well, just because he says he'll have them shot, doesn't mean it's true -

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Flavius Gratian replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@LM71Blackbird I really like the first ship! It looks very fast and sleek. Although, you might want to move the cannon, as it is now it will hit the gaff and spanker. -

The next part of my Celestia rescue expedition has been posted: -
27 April 618 AE, Fairworth Hall The Earl of Wentham was sitting in one of his studies in the Lavendwood family country house, Fairworth Hall. He had just recieved the month's issue of the Kings Port Advertiser, when his eldest son, Vicount Altridge walk past. "Altridge!", Lord Wentham shouted, clearly upset. "Yes, Father", the Vicount aswered as he entered the study. "Have you seen the Kings Port Advertiser?" Without waiting for answer he continued, "The Wentham has been lost to those pirate scum! It's an outrage!" "Disconcerting news, indeed" Altridge answered, "This is a hard blow to the Navy's ability to keep our sea routes safe in the colonies." "Yes, yes, of course, but you are missing the point. It's much worse than that. This is an insult, a slight upon my honour! Sinking the ship named after me is a direct, personal attack on my name - our name." "I thought the ship was named after Wentham county?" "I am Wentham!" he slammed his fist on the desk. "The county and the Earldom are one! This must not remain unanswered! I will send word to the shipyard to immediatly begin construction of a new HMS Wentham to avenge the old, and to restore my honour." _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ So this is my small build to sistership the HMS Wentham. I hope @Bregir can fill in the proper forms so that she'll be ready for the coming MRCA round. Since I've finally started using Bluerender, I took the opportunity to update the original post with rendered pictures as well.

A really nice ship! I think you've done a great job including small details, such as the anchor which I always forget. The rigging, as usual is superb! I can't tell you enough how amazed I am by the fact that you manage to it just using string. I assume you used paper for the sails? Some comments: while the hatches do look nice, I don't really understand what they represent in real life. Do you possibly have any pictures of examples? I think you should have used some kind of inverted slope for the prow instead of a normal rectagular brick. As it is now, it looks a bit strange being entirely vertical. Finally, I wouldn't want to stand on the poop deck; that railing barely covers one's feet! Oach! How late in the workprocess did that happen?

Sistershipping the HMS Wentham
Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thank you! I thought it was a fun idea, and an opportunity to develop Lawliet's family a bit. Hope she makes the navy proud! Thank you! I surely hope so! *touch wood -
The Lavendwood Commercial Trading Agricultural and Manufacturing Enterprise Limited was experiencing good times and expanding. Sugar plantations in Port Raleigh were building up a stable financial base while the Western Wind II had repeatedly brought in good profits during trade runs. It was now time for Hugo Lavendwood to launch his second trade vessel: Lady Belson. A small brig capable of outrunning most large ships with enough hold space to carry cargo. She is armed with two long nine stern chasers to fend off against pirates and five 4 pounders on each side if she should get cought up. Finally, a capable and experienced crew will serve to keep her safe on the high seas. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ So I've finally gotten around to using Bluerender! I thought it was about time to expand my trading fleet, as I've been mostly building for HM Navy. Now that it's summer I'll probably spend a lot more time on ship building, in fact I've already started with some work that will be posted in due time. Lady Belson is obviously based on Lady Washington. I was initially only going to use her as a base but then I thought those colours and everything looked quite nice so I took most of what Iiked. I used this as a tutorial of sorts to practice building ships with more than one deck, and I think the aft half deck works quite well! Comments and criticism is welcomed!

[COR-FB-Class 10 Ship] 134-gun First-rate Ship-of-the-Line "HMS Indomitable" (Formerly HMS Resilience)

Actually, the stats for classes 9 and 10 are on the "About Ships" page. It's 33 and 39 respectively As said, they are on the page -
[OL - FB] Altar of Cthonic Hades, Fatu Hiva
Flavius Gratian replied to Ross Fisher's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
A great first build! The most eyecatching aspect is obviously the statue itself. I had never thought of Hades this way but now that I see it, it makes perfect sense. Overall, I think you've done a very good job of making this small and potentially simple build interesting thanks to the arches, pillars and different "levels" (for lack of a better word)! I spy some thing on the backside of the shrine, could we possibly get another picture? -
[COR-FB-Class 10 Ship] 134-gun First-rate Ship-of-the-Line "HMS Indomitable" (Formerly HMS Resilience)
Flavius Gratian replied to LM71Blackbird's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Very impressive work! She even looks larger than Royal Philip, since Dominance have more cannons I guess she must be. Very well done! My only criticism would be that the spanker is far to high up on the mizzen, so it looks a bit strange. I understand you want to fit the naval jack and the lanterns but I think that could easily be solved by angling the boom upwards. From the look of it I would say that the jack can also be angled a bit more to give room, otherwise you could fastned it to the spanker, which was also very common. See my Lady Belson for both the angled boom and attached flag. Secondly you might want to remove the support pieces on the back of the sails; it just looks a bit better that way. But these are minor things compared to the tremendous work you've accomplished! You have really improved! Long live the Queen! -
[COR June FB2] RSND Headquarters, Jameston
Flavius Gratian replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Yes, I did see it, it's just that it's easy to miss. Thanks! I don't think I've seen that piece before. It's quite a few years since I bought any new lego sets. -

Flavius Gratian replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Excellent build! It's truly befitting the RSND! It would have been nice to see the whole building, as it is now you can easily think it's just the facad. And what pieces did you use for the plants? -
[OL - FB/Intro/SigFig] Padre Jules François
Flavius Gratian replied to Ross Fisher's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Welcome to BoBS! Fantastic to finally see Oleon live up to it's fanaticism! Your chatacters really capture the essence of the Inquisition; you wouldn't want to meet either of them on a dark night. I also joined Eurobricks specifically for BoBS, so we seem to be of similar mind. It can be overwealming at first but with some reading (and re-reading) of the rules you'll get on track. Also, everybody here is really helpful so just ask whenever you have a question. Looking forward to see your story! -
[COR - FB] Lady Belson - Class 4
Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thank you! As @LM71Blackbird said, the sails are a real hassle, so this is about as much work as I'm willing to spend. I also view it as a bit of a placeholder as legosails are a bit strange. I'm trying to bring the different naval jacks into action, this red one is the merchant jack, I've previously used blue for naval vessels. Glad you appreciate it! Thank you very much! I agree the render worked well and she lookes quite close to the original. I hope so too! Thank you! Hopefully she'll earn some money! -

Thank you very much! While I don't remember the exact time the sails took me, it was easily the single most time consuming part of the ship; probably a few hours. -
[COR] Medium Sugar Plantation
Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thank you! Thanks! I agree, though I've always thought it a shame that Bluerender doesn't visualise the lines between bricks -
Update: rendered pictures After experiencing a few months of success, Lavendwood Commercial Trading Agricultural and Manufacturing Enterprise Limited had finally built up a subtantial amount of capital. Hugo now belived it was time to invest and expand the the business. Therefore, he sent instructions to his man in Port Raleigh, Richard, to establish a new, larger sugar plantation. Richard overlooking the ongoing work together with the plantation overseer, at the management office A few workers going off to harvest And finally, an overview of the plantation ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I felt it was time to start investing in some buildings again. I hope to build more in Port Raleigh in the future as the town has been sadly neglected. I have replaced my previous sugar cane technique with Ayrlego's from his Royal Sugar Plantation and I think it works quite well. I was also apparently struck by madness when buildning and chose to do everything from the ground beneath the canes to the office house as complicated as possible, probably increasing the build time fourfold. But I am happy with the result, so I guess it was worth it. Sadly, I still havn't got around to figuring out bluerender so the pictures could probably be better. All comments and criticism are welcome! Original pictures:

[COR - small residence x2] The rescue expedition heads out/Outskirts of Jameston
Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thank you! You're definetly right that trees are a weak point of mine, I lack both experience and parts, so I usually try to hide them in the background. Storywise, I tried to continue from the previous accounts written about the Myzec. Glad you liked it! -
[COR - small residence x2] The rescue expedition heads out/Outskirts of Jameston
Flavius Gratian posted a topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Even though Jameston has grown rapidly in size, it's still a young city. Outside the city centre and away from "Montoya Street" the outskirts of Jameston sprawl. Here the streets are not cobbled but only lined with fences, if you are lucky, and the buildings are small, simple wooden houses for the new and poor residents who have not the time nor money to build the impressive stone and brick houses, characteristic of the large town. However, the booming city expands and even here the shacks are pushed away by new appartment buildings, and the jungle, still close by the town perimiter, will soon be crushed by brick and stone. But not yet; now Lieutenant Lavendwood's rescue expedition has assembled at the edge of town, ready to head out into the jungle to find the missing diplomat Samuel Barlow and the able seamen who joined him on his mission. As the men finish the final preparations, Lawliet discussed their route with Sergeant Ferris. "The reports of native activity together with the witnesses we've found, who saw Mr Barlow leave town, both point to this area being the likeley place of a native settlement", Lawliet said, pointing at the map. "Indeed, and this is the road Mr Barlow followed when leaving so I think we're on track, sir", Sergeant Ferris agreed. Before either of them could continue, they were interrupted by shouting from behind. "Sir, sir!" Midshipman Tom Swift shouted as he came running up to them, together with a tanned-skinned man with non-halosian facial features. He was clearly a native from one of the colonies, probably a Myzec from Cascadia, Lawliet thought. "Sir, I found one! I found an interpreter!", Tom said enthusiastically, while giving a quick salute. "Pushing it to the last minute, Tom, that's not how we do it in HM Navy", Lawliet said with an overly stern tone. When Tom looked concerned he added, with a smile: "It's alright, Tom! Now, who is this?" "This Ohtli, from Myzectlan", Tom introduced the stranger who gave a slight bow. "I thought it was exceedingly rare for Myzec to leave Myzectlan; what are you doing here?" Lawliet asked. He had read the reports of Dr. Albert Brickingstone with great interest, back when they were published by the Royal Society. Ohtli smiled in way that reminded Lawliet of how teachers looked when students asked certain questions. "You would be right to think so, Lieutenant", he said with surprising fluency, though he did have a noticable accent. "The Myzec prefer to keep to ourselves and preserve the old ways. However, ever since Dr. Brickingstone's arrival to our city, I have been fascinated by the outside world. All the knowledge he brought and the novel clothes and tools of his visitors." "Well, since you now had the whole world to explore, why did you end up just next door here on Celestia?" Lawliet inquired. Again, Ohtli smiled: "Our stories tell us that Myzectlan were once but part of a great realm, with cities sprawling across, what you call, Cascadia. Our people even travelled over the great water to other lands. Though we have long since lost contact with them, our stories maintain that across the sea our cousins still live. So when news reached us that many travellers were exploring Celestia, I thought it would be a great opportunity to go there myself and try to find the remains of our people." "I see", Lawliet said. "So, you say you can translate for us; how do you know that, if the last contact with the island's natives was long back in distant history?" "Very astute, Lieutenant! I joined one of the expeditions a few months ago, and during our travels we encountered some natives. Although we didn't directly contact them I could hear part of their speech and it was indeed familiar, so I'm quite sure I can be of help to you." Lawliet realised he didn't like that smile. As he gave the paper he had been studing to Tom he said: "Excellent! We are leaving right now, so find a place in the column when we march off, preferably close to myself or Mr Swift!" Lawliet turned around to the assembled troops and gave marching orders. "Sergeant Ferris, I want your marines in the van and rear! Sailors form two lines and prepare to march!" _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm going to licence this as residence; since I don't think it quite qulifies as a medium, I'll just make two small properties. The wooden house: The stone house: Overview pictures with and without minifigs -
As far as I've understood it, you first have a dice roll for the weather gauge which both gives a bonus to the winner (though it's unclear how large a bonus) and determines the combat style, so if I have chosen guns as my prefered combat style and win the weather gauge the battle will be comparing my gun rolls vs theirs, with crew and hull having no effect. Though I can't answer as to what happens with the order when there are several ships.

Flavius Gratian replied to Flavius Gratian's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thank you! I always love creating scene with lots of people running around, that's one of the main advantages of real bricks as opposed to LDD in my opinion. I bought a bunch on Bricklink so I expect that you'll be able to do it too! I wanted to portray the contrast between new fledgling settlements and the march of civilisation, glad you think it worked! Thank you very much! I will hopefully post the next part soon, so stay tuned! -
[COR - FB] Brickford Residence
Flavius Gratian replied to LM71Blackbird's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Congratulations! It's very well deserved! Your hard work building up Quinnsville is really impressive and puts the rest of us to shame. The build is also nice, the details like the timber frame and the small terrace by the door really puts life to even simple builds! As well as all the interior's furniture and placement of the Brickford's personal belongings.
