    [MOC] Forbidden Island

Hello everybody, Here I present you my latest creation/recreation: forbidden Island. The first pirates cove released in 1989. Following the new pirates of Barracuda Bay style, with my own twist on the amount of details and techniques employed, I tried to update that set, restyle and expand it. I added some natives structures like in the bay, a bridge, lookout mast and a small cave where some chests are stashed. There's a prison with a bluecoat skeleton, some cannons and a shack, were pirates can plot their new plunder. Main overview: From here there's a clear view of the dock and the crew unloading their loot. On the right side, underneath the bridge, there's the wreck of a small dinghy. From this perspective, underneath the bridge, there's a small cave where a couple of chests are hidden away. This is the interior of the cave area. Here, front and center, you can see the wreck of a dinghy with its oars in the carcass of its hull. View of the back of the main island. On the left side, now overrun by plants one can still see the entrance and floor of the old temple, of which the scattered stones were collected and reused to build the prison and on top the wooden structure. 3 cannons protect the building. One can even still see the remnants of the old pier that gave access to this section of the island. View of the main structure with a prison underneath and a shack made out of reclaimed pieces of a shipwreck. Its main mast used as a lookout place, and 3 cannons guard the island and its inhabitants. Here you can better see the remains of the temple and its statue. For this purpose I chose the other style just because it looks more ancient, almost like Easter Island statues. Here there's some better view of the details of the temple's floor. View of the interior of the shack with weapons, table with map and lamps. Other side with a view over the fireplace. Interior of the prison, with bluecoat skeleton, wooden bed and chains.

I am impressed and LOVE IT! I also love the little modifications in colour and I think they add even more diversity compared to what I did, especially the "wooden planks with nails", those are really cute and I should have added those in the model as well, but oh well! I like the mod to the sand pile, that looks indeed sturdier than what I did, so I might do that myself! About the roof, I am glad that it is sturdy and stable, that's great news, I only wish I could make it angled like the cabin and have more room, but that aside I love how it looks and that you actually built it, thank you for sharing the pictures!
  3. I love the castaway and the little crab is so cute! Also that singer's headpiece would be great for the natives, the violin and bow also is very cute and useful. The remainder of the figures are nice overall.

Thank you! I've never heard of that game before you mentioned it and it's colours and style sort of reminds me of Sea of Thieves game, which is kind of where I was leaning towards. I love its style and colour-scheme and the bay does give me some of its vibes so I tried to make a mix of both worlds. Thank you and me too! I thought the little trail was coming up nice, also because from the front you wouldn't really see it, but I think I will make it from scratch and expand it a bit more. I don't understand this quote...

This is the most flattering thing ever! It made me happy and smile so much. Thank you very much! I am glad that everything worked perfectly out and seeing it in picture is something else. Did you have to modify anything to make it work? For example the rooftop on the cabin, do you think it is stable enough? My point was, as you mentioned, the sturdiness of the additions and an easy removal process (which you can also see in the studio file), although you can't check it effectively in the program, even if I try to createit as "realistically buildable" as possible. I'm really, really thankful you shared these pictures and I NEED MORE! hahaha If and when (no hurry) you have time, I'd like a couple more angles and close-ups. You can just make a wetransfer link and send it privately if you don't want to share them here. Again, no hurry, no rush etc.

This is all I did back in jan 2019... basically I made it the same size of the original base, but out of bricks, I was adding also a sort of "hidden" little stairs + trail to go up the hill, beside the slope on the side. although I wasn't completely happy with the result. The sand part was just at a very early stage, trying out colours and position and also I was trying to keep it at the minimum possible because my intention was to build it. I wanted to fuse into it also skull island, but the regular set, not a remake. It is very difficult to make it nicely detailed and keep the brick count down! Then I got busy with other things and it is sitting there for the time being. I think I will make it from scratch and in a different way, probably way larger so I can insert more details and keep it just digital because I wouldn't have the space to place it, let alone the money to make it!

I'm really happy that you like this renewed version of the island. It was one of my first sets after BSB. I really liked it when I was little and I still find it somewhat more evocative of adventure compared to the bigger Rock Island Refuge set. Before they announced the bay, I was working on an improved RIR, I built just some parts of the baseplate out of bricks and I've made it more rocky. I also wanted create a proper dungeon etc, but I never finished it...

Thanks and I know, I wish it could be built, but right now I don't have the finances to buy the pieces for this because it would cost me at least €2-300 and I am already saving up for the bay, plus it is a bit larger than the bay, so I wouldn't have enough space even if I had the money to buy them both! The sails are just for show, they're all overlapping flags. You could build it, but that would mean cutting and gluing to make them. If I had this built, I would use some old cloth, dye it with coffee or tea, stain it, shred it and then put in place. That's something I am going to do on the bay... @Mister Phes here you go: I have made two types of renders, one which is 1:1 = 1080x1080 and one that is 4:3 = 4096x3072. I think you should use this larger one because once posted on instagram you can cut the sizes down to square and not lose details, since the smaller one suffers from that, it is less crisp and you will see it in the following photos. 1080x1080 4096x3072 1080x1080 4096x3072

Unfortunately what I have posted on here is what I got from studio rendering, so if you like this one in particular, I can make a new one and cut it square, but I think the image will be quite small. Anyway I'll post it here and you decide.

Thank you very much! Thank you! I considered for a moment the LEGO Ideas submission, but then some other users on here published there some pirate-related ideas and they were not accepted because they were overlapping with the pirate bay, so that is why I didn't post it there. I should come up with a completely different idea to submit there, but I don't think this one is the right one. I'd be very happy and honored if and when that happens. Feel free to post on instagram or elsewhere my MOC! Thank you for considering it!

    [MOC] Forbidden Island 2020.

I think you did a great job using mainly the bay pieces to recreate this wonderful set. It is lovely, well-balanced and interesting to look at.

    [MOC] Forbidden Island

This is too good of a compliment, thank you! I'm really happy that you liked this creation. My first approach to the set was going to be similar to Piraten's outcome, as in updating the old set with new pieces and some small additions (which he did very, very well!), then I remembered I was not supposed to make a set that needs to be sold by LEGO, so I started seeing what I could do to improve it and what didn't make sense in the original set: we don't have stairs that go right in the water for no reason anymore. Also, what's the point of having stairs + bridge to go to the main building, when you can just have the stairs connected to the building itself, since you're on the same island. I know that it gives an exotic look and sense of adventure, but there's no logic to it. So I thought it would have been better to create two separate islands which are connected by a bridge, and also more palm trees! Thank you for stopping by! Thank you! It took a while to insert all the details, though it is also very relaxing to make it rich and interesting. Especially when everything tells a small story on its own and enriches the whole output.

Thanks! The only problem is they can't be built because the small flags overlap to some degree, but yes, their rigidity helps in the shaping and plasticity of their movement

    [MOC] Forbidden Island

I am happy you enjoyed every detail I put in. For the cannons, you can check my thread on the Renegade Runner here: If you scroll down there's a post where I illustrate the building process. Thank you! The coconut trees are of 4 different types and built using different techniques, so they give a more natural and less standardized look, even if they are homogenous. As per using Barracuda Bay pieces to build this, unfortunately you can't because this is all custom made and this set alone has 3k pieces which are not the ones included in that set, although on Facebook a guy posted recently some pictures of a forbidden Island almost identical to the original one, but with the parts of the island itself. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/the7sea/posts/189914326004371 I know about the railing. My idea was to put those studded strings on both sides of the bridge to make the railing, but any kind of string or tube etc. isn't well implemented in studio and it is PIA to move them around and make them work! I thought about adding some sort of clip on top, but I haven't found anything interesting or nice-looking. If you have any suggestion, feel free to share!

Of course everything can be improved or modified, you just need some more time to change things. Sometimes when I build something that is, like yours, already complete and very well finalized that you don't need to change anything (and in this case you really don't), after several weeks my mind starts subconsciously working on the piece and then it gives me a new idea. This kind of input makes me slightly modify my creation, see new addition and make it even more perfect compared to before.

Such a wonderful building! Intricate but simple, with many different angles, levels and scenes throughout. Also really ingenious way to use those plain white boxes. The contrast that creates with the dark rocks and the vegetation is really striking. Wonderful build indeed, bravo!

Thanks for "elevening" my additions! I can share the new file file, there's no problem about it. Here's the link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AlQl1MOk7t7SgRMvQaRVtEArOqJU?e=nDeJsP On a side note, yesterday I worked on a new type of sail, to show off the weathering and the damage after 20+ years stranded on the island, so I made two version with a different color-scheme: Version 1: The red stripes now are dark gray, while the white stripes are dark tan. This is because the elements have damaged the sails, broken them and their colors are no more the original ones. On real ships sails are almost never pure white, they always tend to a sort of light tan/light gray color, which gets stained and dirty because of the weather, so they turn darker and with patches of dark color all over them. So this is what I wanted to portray here, also since these have been hanging for 20+ years, their discoloration/mutation is even worse than on a regularly kept ship. Version 2: In this version I tried to change the color-scheme with something more reminiscent the original red color, so I used a mixture of nougat and dark nougat, to give that faded-away look. I am still not sure of that color, but given the fact that there's not a color wheel in stud.io, I had to make do with what I had... NB. 18. I searched online and on here but I found nowhere any information about the prototype that lead to the construction of the actual model. I was wondering if the original author left somewhere anything about how the Black Seas Barracuda was before becoming what it is. Plans, drawings, photographs, etc. I think it would be cool to see the process behind that masterpiece, to see what got included and left out because of lack of parts or Lego's reluctance to make new parts. We sort of have prototype photos of the Barracuda Bay,, some pictures can be seen here: Behind the scenes of LEGO Ideas 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay with designers Milan Madge and Austin Carlson [Feature] | The Brothers Brick | The Brothers Brick (brothers-brick.com) 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay: Designer interview with Milan Madge & Austin William Carlson | New Elementary: LEGO® parts, sets and techniques

    LEGO Barracuda Bay MOD

Really, really nice! I like every detail and yes it looks more close to the original submission, but with its own different character. If I have to nitpick, I don't really like the whiteness of the windows, because they look too bright compared to the rest. But that's it. I love the spaciousness of the Jose's Inn, Rosie's supply shack with her guns ready at hand and everything else going on in the scene! Lovely work indeed!

Is it available anywhere the 6285 BSB Prototype?

I didn't know about that magazine. I wonder if that issue can be still purchased because I wouldn't mind having it. I was interested in actual pictures of prototypes or just drawings that brought the creator to the actual ship we got... that would be very interesting from a creative point of view and also one could try to reinstate some of the discarded ideas or features that didn't made it because at the time it might not have complied to the total amount of bricks allowed in a set.

    Modding the Barracuda thread

In the previous pages I posted some minor modifications to the bay, by either changing the colour of the white parts to reddish-brown, or by adding extra panels to the structures, to give a more planked and run-down look. I finished modifying some of those planked panels I made back in April and then I added other elements to the set, to make it look more complete. Here are some pictures: In order to enrich and, maybe, improve the look of the bay, I've added different parts to it: 1. The mid-section has had the addition of a back section with a couple of windows, a small balcony with swinging planked cover door and a sloped roof with more planks, vines and foliage. 2. The prison has got an additional roof with some plants on it. 3. The stairs and bridge that lead to the captain quarters have received a railing and some more flowers and vines. 4. The kitchen area now has got a balcony with broken planks. 5. The rooftop of the captain's cabin now has a shed that shields the cannon and makes the area look more finished. 6. More palm leaves, vines, flowers and plants have been added throughout this back area. Close-up view of the back of the mid-section with the additional windows, small balcony with swinging plank cover door and a sloped roof with more planks, vines and foliage. Closer perspective of the kitchen large balcony area, the new bridge with its railing, flowers and vines that leads to the cabin and, up on the rooftop, the new shed area. Close-up of the shed on the captain's cabin. And as a bonus some pictures of the whole modified set by night and by day.

[LEGO IDEAS] Update to my LEGO Islanders Idea

That's weird... Maybe you should contact some moderator here and try to get help or understand why this is happening. Or maybe something is getting missed in translation. If you're trying to upload things on this website using the image upload option and it says you have no space, well... it is because your picture you already posted used all the space available, but the point is that you're not uploading anything on this website, you're just sharing a link from flickr and it gets displayed in here automatically.

    [MOD] Renegade runner

Thank you for the compliments and support about the use of non-Lego parts. I agree that the turnable cannon on this ship and other sets is cute as a toy but not that great for "realism". I even think that those two cannons are too much and I should just put a couple more swivel-guns on the back of the ship, given the approximate size of it. Maybe just allow 1 cannon, but then there is the problem of moving it around on a small ship (if one wants to keep it into the realm of realism). That's too much nitpicking, which means to just put this ship aside and build it anew, on a custom hull etc etc... So, to keep the general shape and memory of the original RR while still updating it a little bit (to make it slightly more realistic), I think I reached that goal. Regarding the pin, you mean it is all about luck, if you get one that is microscopically larger than the other pieces, it may fit into the head, otherwise it will stay loose... cool to know! I just checked your link on your photobucket and I like your "Napoleonic" cannons, I have some of your older designs already saved into a file on my PC, back when I was trying to find some cannons' inspiration. I have many other models downloaded from Flickr as well, and yes, the options are many and the result may vary. As you mentioned, I've been struggling into finding a good combination of elements to create a decent series of cannons too. For my larger MOC ship Parthenope, I have experimented with several types of cannons' styles, and it took a while before getting where I wanted to be. The picture above shows the smaller and larger cannons, both having a very old round brick with no bottom lip on the front as a muzzle. Once I saw that piece on stud.io I though I solved the problem to get a sleek and uniform barrel, instead, when I ordered the pieces and started building it, the bricks didn't fit or were too loose, then I checked the product again and I saw that those round bricks are OLD! So, I ditched those and used the regular round brick. In the picture above, for the larger cannon I had two options, make it grey and use the bucket as a muzzle or make it black and use the palm-tree piece as a muzzle. The latter is what I ended up using. I also added a bar inside of the barrel to make it straight and sturdy (as you mentioned the problem of these pieces not being so strong) and I am enough content about the result. I was thinking I could buy the grey buckets, paint them in black and use them too... but I don't know yet, I don't need all these cannons anyway! For the smaller cannon I used on my big ship, I think I will order some parts and make it look like the small one I posted here for the renegade runner, because it looks cute, but i am still deciding on that! Here are other 3 versions/variation on the larger cannon I still don't know if I want to build in real bricks, as in modifying the ones I already made: Looking at the picture's subpictures in a clockwise motion, the first cannon on the lower left is a sort of modified version of the cannon you see in the picture before this one, the one with the muzzle made out of the black palm-tree piece. The other two cannons are the larger version of the smaller one I made for the Renegade Runner. Thank you!
