    [MOC] Ocean Racer

Hi @BrickbyBrickTechnic, I am glad you asked. I realize that having some kind of side arm or dumper are wacky features that other TC12 entries have used and so perhaps I need something more original. I hope the next blend will power the model to new heights. If that doesn't give it enough lift, I hope to add a bit of bite and perhaps something interesting to grapple with. I expect this next phase may take a week or two as I first need to reroute the crane controls and steering. Once the tower is removed I can then consider the blending process. Currently my blend target is not even built, so that alone will take a couple of evenings.

    [MOC] Ocean Racer

Thank you @TechnicSummse, @msk6003 and @mocbuild101 for your encouragement. I have decided to continue and below is the result of blend 3 after adding the tracks from 42038 (Arctic Truck). It required a complete rebuild of the rear for the 4th time. It doesn't come out well in the pictures but I was able to retain both sets of rear lights from 42039. Single width tracks looked a bit small so I mounted them in pairs. They are on independent axles so the turning is unaffected. In profile the model reminds me of the Thunder Tank from Thundercats.

    [MOC] Ocean Racer

Here's a WIP update that I'd completed but was waiting for sunlight to photograph: I've added in the excavator and dumper from 42023. They are both operating off the controls that were used in the 24 racer to control the doors and bonnet. This way it can grab onto passing racers or drop rocks in their path.

    [MOC] Ocean Racer

Thanks for the clarification @Milan. I am really disappointed that remixing existing models into something new doesn't count as me creating my own model. I spent a lot of time working out which bits I would keep and how the sections could be fitted together. Better I found out now I suppose than after 7 blends. I can understand you trying to avoid grey areas.

    [MOC] Ocean Racer

I'd better reveal my plan then so you can judge if I may still enter the contest. I have 3-7 more official sets I am planning to blend into this model. Each time I hope to keep the added set recognisable. The photo was a WIP after 1 blend. I hadn't included them all in the name yet, as I'm waiting to see how they fit. By the end you will be able to recognise all the different sets but in each case I expect 30-50% of each set will not been used. With the next blend I anticipate the ocean explorer will lose the tower and helipad. Is the combination not an original creation never seen anywhere before? I'm sure other entries will contain sub-assemblies that have been used in other MOCs, is this any different just because they are recognisable? I realize sharing after 1 blend may have made it look like I was trying to pass off official models as my own. I am trying to capture that Hanna-Barbera Wacky Races vibe but in a very LEGO way. I hope my explanation and intent is clear. P.S. Can someone please tell me how to @mention. I just can't work it out. Is it possible if logged in from a tablet?
  6. Thanks for creating a competition that anyone who has even only a few Technic sets can enter. I am looking forward to talking part in my first EB competition.
  7. I like the F1 car particularly. This set has a good mix of parts. I was able to fashion a pair of motorcycles and a remotely operated digger. Instructions on BrickSafe.
  8. As others have mentioned Formula-E works because of the limitations. why not limit the cars to being built from the parts list for 24h racer - 42039 (allowing for colour and wheel substitution as this will be the less common). With a limited brick count the motor/battery choice is moot as there are only 28 gears available. That would give 2 classes purist (power functions, train, Mindstorms) and 3rd party power source/control.
  9. Could you use them as a set of doors for a gravel railway truck? Or perhaps in the compaction mechanism of a rubbish truck (dustbin lorry)?
  10. It is also possible to motorise if you have an Mindstorms EV3 (see here ). It is quite hard to get the weight distribution correct so it is over the drive tracks. It very easily ends up top heavy. I ended up making it rear wheel steering with the battery box in the cab.
  11. Here in the UK we have a bank holiday coming up. In case you were looking for something to build, I have recently finished creating 4 C-models from sets 42026, 42046, 42011 & 42060. The first two were inspired by set 42010 (dirt racer), the second by the record breaker pull back and the pair of motorcycles by the double snap with hole which reminded me of the front forks of a motorcycle. As I've disassembled the models I've taken pictures so you can build them yourselves. Visual instructions are on bricksafe.

    Purism

An interesting perspective to this discussion which hasn't been explored yet, is the official Lego Mindstorms competitions allow for use of art supplies. The cookie/egg decorating and drawing robots made using Mindstorms clearly aren't pure Lego. Are the Lego sins listed by @Sariel because these are things pretending to be/could be mistaken for genuine Lego? When you discover the truth it can be a disappointment? Personally, as some of the others have mentioned, C-models are a favourite. Initially it was limited to the Mindstorms EV3 but more recently I have been making C-models from small sets (studless era). I enjoy the creativity caused by the limited part count and the sharability from using a common set of bricks.
  13. is there a minimum part count needed to have an A and B model? Is 2017 the first time it was tried to use both pull back motors in the combined model? Do you impose an artificial part restriction to improve creativity? How is it decided what spare parts to include?
  14. I was recently given a 42060 road work crew set with the challenge to build something dancing related with it. The Swing-out is a staple of the Lindy hop dance style. It basically resembles a highly eccentric orbit like a comet, where the follow comes from arms length to close to the lead, is turned about and then moves away again (this can be repeated until either party has had enough). My question is what is the minimum parts to achieve an 'orbit'. So far my attempts require separate mechanisms for the in-and-out (using the tracks as a conveyor) and the round and round. The set has ample orange parts with which to build the dancers who keep one hand linked the entire move.
  15. Here is my first version with the in and out mechanism. I could use Mindstorms to make the dancers to-and-fro as well as spin but it feels a bit like cheating.
  16. Create a new variable set to 0. Inside a loop which reads the variable and ends if the variable = 2 put a switch block. If the switch detects the left button is pressed, read the variable block, add +1 then write back to the variable. The other option on the switch is set to default but is empty. Add a sound block after the loop for testing. You might need to put a wait block after the switch inside the loop set to 0.1 seconds.

    Effe's MOC Corner

My initial impression of the lines of the model was a 1920/30's vibe. So when lights on the fenders was suggested, I thought they might have been mounted above the bodywork rather than integrated into it. Are you planning to have LED behind them?

    [C-models] Penguin Funfair

Thank you for the encouraging comments. I have made a playlist of all seven models. Super Happy Fun Land is a place of joy for all LEGO penguins. As well as food stands, gift shop and sheep petting, there are a range of exciting rides to choose from. I also have the Construction Crew (42023) and Hydroplane Racer (42035) sets, so if the inspiration strikes me, there may be a couple more rides yet.
  19. Up until now I have made remixes of the EV3 home edition with one technic set. I find the limited selection of parts really helps me come up with more creative models. In this post I would like to share C-models for 42032, 42033, 42038 & 42052 which combine to form a Penguin Funfair. The funfair uses the system sets 5582, 6186, 5764, 3845 plus lots of pick-a-model penguins (3850015). Recently I acquired the Record Breaker and was disappointed by the lack of B-Model. This was a particularly tricky model to create an alternative build for as it lack any gears. Given the similarities to a jet-plane, I initially tried creating a stand-alone plane but it never looked quite right. Once I hit upon the idea of the Penguin Funfair I rebuilt it so there were enough bricks remaining for the frame and controls (Tilt and rock). From there the other rides came one buy one as I sat and looked at the parts. I think the next one is my favourite, made from the Compact Loader (spinning chairs). Arctic Truck (Drop Tower and Pendulum) Heavy Lift Helicopter (Chair Plane, Teacups and dismount steps)

    Best Technic Set

I prefer to keep my sets individual, as building with a limited range of bricks greatly increases the model creativity. As a result my pick would be 42038 Arctic Truck. The model itself is flawed but the balance of pieces (suspension, gearbox, tracks, beam/panel ratio) makes it a great basis for Remix creations with the EV3 and smaller technic sets.

    Howdy

Hi I'm Stephen and like many people I gave away my Lego stash when I reached adulthood. I got back into Lego with the release of the Mindstorms EV3 (I went to get it the day it was released). I have since bought various technic sets when they were on sale. I usually build EV3/technic remixes (gallery here) but have started getting into building C-models for the technic sets.
