    (MOC) Bossk Battle Mech

Hello! Here is the third mech in this series. I had a lot of fun building this guy as I went into it with a clear sense of scale from the start. I initially got a whole lot of those chest cavities with cover plates from the Nexo Knights battle suits as I thought that this was the scale I would be building in, but Bossk is the only mech where I ended up using this piece as intended. I think one of the biggest challenges for me was the limited part selection available in olive green but it actually helped focus the direction that I took this build. I re-used IG-88's base because I don't have the space to keep building landscapes but I did add a little island using a technique that I saw Thomas Jenkins use in his wonderful "Not So Super Six" Hope you like it! I see you are a man of culture! My first attempts at building a helmet kept coming out as a crappy cross between Halo and crazy frog and looked ridiculous. I then tried a 4x4 half sphere canopy which looked alright but lacked inspiration. I was pretty happy to find the Chima piece hidden in the minifig tub! I've been collecting Bionicle parts over the last year exactly for this! Not sure how I'm going to use them yet as I've yet to tackle him seriously (25% done?). Dengar is 90% done but in pieces and needs revisiting as I haven't touched him for a couple of years and 4-Lom is 98% done .

Thanks Mandalorianknight! In a lot of ways I feel like Boba was my "apprentice piece". I was a lot more confident going into this one as I was able to expand on all that I had learned whilst constructing Boba. I came out of my Dark Ages when my kids came along (who are now entering their own Dark Ages!) so I missed out on the Bionicle side of things although the kids had some Hero Factory sets. I'm enjoying combining System with Constraction and I think this has helped lift my game with Bossk, adding life to him. He is far better constructed and quite swooshable. This is a feature of all of the mechs in this series as I want them to have a power armour feel about them. Glad you like it!
  5. Ya, plating it out between the banks of slopes at the front and the sides. I've never used Stud.io before, I'm more of a fiddle around kind of guy but perhaps this is the motivation I need! My next mech is ready for photography and I want to shoot it on my next batch of days off so give me a couple of weeks to get my act together and I'll give it a crack. I make no promises though! Maybe it'll turn to crap but I'm keen to see how it pans out. Flick over that section when you're ready, I know you're busy wrapping your head around the TIE at the moment. Cheers
  6. Hi Kage The 4x4 plates (or whatever size works) would need to be packed out by a couple of plates to bring them up to level, but I think this is a pretty simple solution that uses your existing infrastructure. The gaps would close up at the top and open up at the bottom but wedgeplates would help with that. Or you could flip the mixel plates by 90 degrees and attach them to bricks to create 1x brick panels. Just spitballing here but I think this might be an avenue worth exploring.
  7. Hi Kage, If you squared off the brick sloped sections (keep it at 8 studs wide at the front and 4 studs wide at the sides) so that the turret remains fixed as you've designed it, could these voids then be filled with wedge plates on hinges as you've done else where? I think it could soften the base of the turret a bit more than the current brick sloped square set solution and provide a surface that could be tiled or greebled as well. Just a thought, it's really coming together regardless! Cheers
  8. Your proportions are very accurate making for a nice clean build. Well done!

    (MOC) IG-88 Battle Mech

Hiya Here is the second MOC in this series which follows on from Boba Fett's Battle Mech. I was reluctant to start this one as IG-88 has been done many times before and I wasn't sure how to tackle it and it stayed unfinished for a long time whilst I worked on the other mechs in this series. The upper torso with it's space for the minifig and the shoulder joint gave me no end of grief but seeing IG-11 in action in Episode 1 of the Mandalorian helped me realise how he would move in battle (instead of the stiffly awkward way he was portrayed in Empire) and that the important thing was to try to capture this sense of motion. Anyway, here he is and I'm glad to get this one out of the way haha. I hope you like it! Thank you so much, it's taken a lot of learning and a lot of tweaking to get to this point and I'm pretty happy with the end result. Finally, I can move on haha! Next mech will be uploaded very soon.

    (MOC) IG-88 Battle Mech

Thanks for the kind words! I finally found some time and bulked up IG-88's base a bit to marry up to Boba's, so here they are together. Happy Star Wars Day! Helmets Up by Greg Dalink, on Flickr Helmets Down by Greg Dalink, on Flickr

    SB00601 AR-PROJECT (MOC AT-RT 501 version UCS)

This is ridiculously monumental! I'm always a sucker for a brick built helmet and your shaping is on point. The engineering in this is beautifully elegant, well done!

    (MOC) IG-88 Battle Mech

Thanks! I tried a few variations where the helmet was attached to the body (similarly to Boba) but none of them looked any good. I figured a removable helmet was a reasonable compromise. That was part of the effect I was going for. Just some bones in the desert to go with the Krayt dragon. I found the head rummaging around in the minifig tub. It's from one of my kids' Hero Factory sets and I liked the alien look about it and thought it might be a bit more interesting than a regular skull. Thanks! I tried keeping the model as slim as possible, especially around the hips I agree! Being a mech gave me a lot more freedom in taking artistic license.

    (MOC) IG-88 Battle Mech

I like his little pin head too! Why would a droid in a hard suit need a helmet? I don't know but here we are! The helmet was a later addition to the model as originally he was much smaller in scale but all the other mechs ended up with helmets so I added one for IG. It has an axle through the centre which slots into the anti stud in the minifig's head to hold it in position but will fall off if tilted too far. Initially I tried using a pin but every time I removed the helmet it would rip off IG's minifig head so I settled for the axle. Thanks! It was actually a lot of fun coming up with the design but not so much fun incorporating it into the landscape so that it would stay in position. The landscape butts up against the Sarlacc pit in Boba's model. I worked from reference pictures to try and capture some of the prominent features like the hoses around his legs and the greebly bits around his torso. I know IG-88 is full of greebles but I didn't want it's hard suit to look too messy so I tried to strike a balance between greebles and clean lines. Thank you all for checking out my MOC!

Brilliant! The brown highlights where Cap's harness and webbing would be is perfect!

    (MOC) Boba Fett Battle Mech

Hi This MOC is the first in a series, the idea of which was spawned by the release of set 75167 - Bounty Hunter Speeder-Bike Battle Pack. I never had a clear idea of the scale I was building in, and only a basic idea of what he would look like, so he evolved over time. As he got bigger he needed constant redesigning to prevent him collapsing under his own weight. It's been nearly 5 years in the making, with a lot of learning along the way. I hope you like it! You betcha! Agree, such a good character but I've got my hands full finishing my current work! Expect the next installment very soon...
  23. I like the way you've eased into building your first MOC by taking on a UCS scale project haha. Ya, I'd like to point out that I am also unqualifed but I do agree with the statement below... Not sure if you've seen this guy's work: SNOT circles by lisqr, on Flickr Also there is this guy, who has an entire folder on Circles and Cylinders (not sure how to link to it though): 12 sides by Péter Ittzés, on Flickr Might be some good resources if you decide to try to minimise the current scalloped effect on the cylinders behind the cockpit (I understand the challenge of not having appropriate parts!) So good to catch the early stages of someone's WIP, you must be stoked to finally share the journey and get it out there! Looking forward to watching your progress

    (MOC) Boba Fett Battle Mech

Thanks, but if I were starting again, I would attach his utility belt to his hips instead of his torso. This was fine when he was smaller, but at this scale it limits his twisting movement at the waist and makes him top heavy. It would require some major work, and at this stage it feels like "good enough" is good enough as I'm keen to finish the next mech in this series. Thank you! I really wanted this to fit into the Star Wars Universe and tried to strike a balance between Dieselpunk and Anime. As an aside, I wanted to use the Maori word for 'Warrior" when describing the class of mech in honour of Temura Morrisson, but turns out that the Maori word is "Toa" and that ship has well and truly sailed haha! In the end I chose Achilles-Class because of his Spartan type appearance.
