  1. I tend to just not put batteries in my battery boxes and then put an extension cable from a 9v train controller to the battery box output terminal to power the model.
  2. Thanks, I built most of Tom Atkinson's large ferris wheel, but it is so cumbersome to move around, I likely won't ever bring it to a show. I am going to build another small wheel and see if I can get the piece count down and reduce the complexity of assembly.

  6. Here is a lift MOC that I made for the Great Ball Pit - Spring into GBC challenge from Discord: Seems fairly reliable. I modelled it in parallel in stud.io, and am in the process of making instructions if anyone is interested.

I built my first GBC MOC this weekend, with the target to make a lift module from the new 2x4 brick with axle holes from the Spike Prime set: Added some motor bracing and side guards to keep balls from rolling under, since I made the video, but seems decent reliable. If I put a large amount of balls in the infeed (~50+), the agitator can tend to sling them around a bit, and have seen a couple fall out the back. I wish I had a lower height to the stepper, but I maxed it out with the using double 5x7 frames as guides. As a result, the infeed pitch is a bit less than I would like. Built it for the "Spring Into GBC" challenge, spawned from the Great Ball Pit discord.
  8. I would detension the yellow one. For mine, I would start at a low setting and tension them until I noticed that they would drop slowly, then back off a bit. -Brian

The original units supplied 10vac through a stepdown transformer, which feeds into the full bridge rectifier in the speed regulator unit to convert to DC and then through a voltage regulator to provide 0-9v. Many people now that I have spoke to at GBC events seem to be using 12vdc supplies, which are cheaper and more efficient with the switching power supplies, and readily available due to their use in security camera applications. The speed regulator bridge rectifier doesn't care if we are running 12vdc through it, and the voltage drop from the diodes isn't enough for the voltage regulator to care either.

  14. +1 on this! I built the Ball Factory V2 as my first GBC 2 yrs ago or so, and lost interest in GBC soon after building it, only to get back into it this year. After building several other designs, most workshop modules, I am starting to see the difference between a cool GBC for a shelf display, and a fun GBC that can be setup for a show and run for 8 hours or more reliably. Would love to take mine apart and rebuild it in a more refined manner. -Brian
  15. Attached a picture. I just had it laid into the gap, with it staying in place from the liftarms. I also put a few technic bricks in front of the downstream catch and spin. It will require re-engineering, possibly just changing the stroke. Nevertheless, a cheap alternative at $0.37 each direct from lego.
  16. I ran the Catch & Spin modules at the Brickfair NC this weekend. Kept 2 in layout at all times. The first one (dark gray) that I built, which had about 8 hr of runtime before the event worked flawlessly. It didn't appear to drop many balls, and only had to stop once over the 14 hrs to clear a ball that managed to get under the infeed from the previous red C&S. I only had a bit of testing with the other 3 modules, and swapped them in and out of the layout for testing. Didn't end up tweaking them much to stop from fully dropping balls, but did add a guide to keep balls from going into the center gears. (starts at 6:34)
  17. I haven't. as I don't want to lose flexibility to integrate with other modules at shows. I will take the modules to the Charlotte NC Brickfair this weekend and see how they work. I put about an hour of runtime on them last night without any issues. They seem to be more reliable than other Akiyuki modules that I played with in the past.
  18. It all depends on were you plan on using it. I am going to try to add some terry cloth and table cloth setup and see if I can get something that works for all modules, as most of my modules tend to move around on these cheap plastic folding tables. Anyway, the Catch & Spin instructions are pretty straightforward and it is a relatively easy build, reminding me of building a studless lego set like 42043 Arocs.
  19. Finished the Catch and Spin modules. They don't fit together perfectly for a quad loop, and would vibrate far enough apart to start dropping between the transfers after a few minutes of running. Maybe if I put a proper towel and tablecloth setup below, they would work. I like how effective the tuning is for the robot pickups. If it is dropping balls, increase tension. If it is not picking up properly, loosen tension. Please excuse my crappy cell phone videos.

  21. Yes, my right side dropped balls when I first built it. I had both clamping adjustments set to minimum. I increased the right tension and the right side hasn't dropped since. I took it apart some to look at the internals some, and when I ran it afterwards, the left side would drop balls occasionally. I increased the clamping (was still at min), and I haven't seen either side drop balls in 15min of testing. I am going to try to build a loop this weekend to test it and my other gbcs, and see how it holds up. Ordered the remainder of the parts I need for 3 more of these in lime, yellow and red, and hopefully it arrives soon from Germany, in time for NC.
