    POTC - Black Pearl!

I got mine on Friday, and I've been working on some mods to it like those you have mentioned, but I haven't quite finished yet. I've built a more accurate forecastle, and designed and assembled an alternate stern that raises the cabin up a few bricks. The bottom deck has been tiled and slightly redesigned for a little bit more functionality. Currently in progress are a large crow's nest (I'm having some difficulty working around the sail assembly,) adding rigging to the foremast, and building an upper deck. I've also unified the color scheme quite a bit, replacing some of the brown and light bley with dark bley and black. It's coming along, slowly but surely.

    POTC - Black Pearl!

On the size, it doesn't seem too me to be too much smaller that BB. If you've had a pirate ship before, it's size shouldn't be a surprise at all.

How many ships do you have in your fleet?

Two: one is a ship with black sails, crewed by the damned, and captained by a man so evil that hell itself spat him back out...and the other is BB. Does the ship from IMTP count? If so, then 3.

I tried the "Can you look this number up?" trick, and scored one about 15 minutes ago. :) :) :)

    Ideas for brick-built stern?

It seems to me that the new bow piece is totally insufficient for the actual shape of a stern. Since the old stern piece won't be available in new/current colors (reddish brown, dark brown, black) what ideas or solutions have you guys come up with for a stern that has the right look? Pics would be appreciated!

    POTC - Black Pearl!

I don't think it's atrociously bad, it looks like any number of ships that have come out in the last couple of years, though I do have a couple of nitpicks. The stern is too low, though I understand why LEGO put it where they did. HATE the pearl gold windows on the back. Hope these are changed for the final version. Am I the only one who thinks that the mizzen mast is just WAY too tall? Either way, both of those problems are pretty easy to fix... Did anyone else notice that the figurehead is holding one of these in dark bley? Great way to do that, IMO. I'm also excited about the inclusion of Bootstrap Bill....I didn't know if or when we'd be seeing him in a set. Maccus and Jones look great. That's not a new torso on Jack, unless it's a new version of his coat print. My opinion then, based on this one PRELIM image, is that the ship isn't perfect, but a good start for a MOD or MOC BP, and has a few sweet minifigs.

    Set 4183: The Mill

It's more likely that it's meant to be a church: in the script there's some dialogue about how the Church set up a colony there, but that the people all got sick and died (the tombstones where Jack falls in the grave) and the pastor hung himself from the bell (you can briefly see his skeleton during the sword fight, hanging from the rope). If I remember right the plague was caused by Davy Jones' heart being buried on the island. You can see, in the scene, right before the wheel comes loose, that it's in a dry stream bed. It could be that Jones' heart dried up the stream....or something. I kind of fall into the "it's just cool, don't nitpick" crowd myself.

To say that the series is "on hold" isn't really accurate; they can't do ANYTHING until they have a script, which is in development now, and has been for a few months. I think what JD is getting at is that he wants to take the time to make every single one a good ride, instead of just mass-producing them. From his standpoint, it keeps him from getting burnt out on Captain Jack, PLUS he's got a pretty full schedule for shooting in the next year. At least one more POTC flick is on the way, it just may be a while. Personally, even if POTC5 is three years away, I think there's enough legs in the franchise at this point to keep the line going until then. There's a WHOLE LOT of cool ships that LEGO can make, and plenty of cool scenes and characters left to build. We haven't yet seen ANY sets from At World's End for cryin' out loud.

That would amaze me even more than the Black Pearl coming out this week. Plus at Toy Fair the info on the set said November. If they were going to spring it on us as a surprise, they probably wouldn't have said anything, rather than give a release date then without warning move it up five months. I would like those figs a lot more than the regular skellies, but I doubt we'll be seeing them. Super complex molding and printing. I bet if we see more skeleton pirates, they'll be like the Jack and Barbossa we have seen in Isla de Muerta.

This. Also this. We haven't seen or heard anything about the Black Pearl, really, other than it's coming, the piece count, and which movie it's based on. I really doubt TLG would release it this close to the first wave, and without any fanfare or leaked images or ANYTHING. That hasn't ever happened before. It also doesn't really make any sense to move an expensive (but most likely a very popular) set's release from six weeks before Christmas to the summer. I'll bet that this employee was either: 1. wrong or 2. talking about the mini Black Pearl.

It happened with the PoP sets last year as well. They probably don't screen the movie for the set designers. They might get some concept art, still photos and maybe even some clips, and that would explain the discrepancy between the sets and the film. Also, many films these days aren't finished until the last minute...I remember hearing that at the premiere for the second Transformers, Michael Bay noted that some of the special effects were still unfinished and the final cut might be different than what was shown, since the movie had a wide release a week later.

Since the Black Pearl is based on the second movie, Barbossa will most likely not be in this set, since he's dead for most of that movie. Jack, Will, and Elizabeth are on the list that was posted at Wikipedia. Gibbs is as well, and he's already in one of the sets. I don't think the set will be a let-down at all; some people just need to manage their expectations. Am I expecting the set to look exactly like the model from the game? No. It's and 800 piece set at 100 dollars with minifigs. It won't look like it does in the game. I'm not expecting tiled decks. I'm not expecting full rigging. I'm expecting a decent set that can be modded to my pleasure and liking, and if it includes a few new minifigs, great. I'd still buy it for the black sails and hull pieces, even if it only had rehashed figs. Also, I don't think you're justified AT ALL in saying there will be only the one wave; from what I've seen, the sets seem to be pretty popular. And as I posted a few weeks ago, the manager at my local LEGO Store pretty much confirmed there will be sets after the Black Pearl, but he was mum on the details.

Good list there: Jack, Will, (hopefully a new) Elizabeth, Gibbs, Pintel, Ragetti and Davy Jones. Seven figs, and at least 3 all-new ones.

If the Pearl we get in November looks like that I will be very pleased. The sails shouldn't be tattered though, if it's based on Dead Man's Chest like the prerelease stuff has said.

I think it would be weird to announce JUST ONE set in a wave like 8 months before its release without even mentioning that there will be more, but maybe that's just me. Two waves in a year is certainly not unheard-of, I'm just thinking it won't happen this year with this theme. Which is actually a bummer for me, since I really like it.

He didn't say they'd be this year. If we're getting just the Pearl in November, I doubt we'll get anything til next summer. A January release isn't impossible, but I doubt it if we're getting a new wave so soon after another release.

This morning, I was in my local LEGO Store (I got the Fountain of Youth and The Mill) and the manager there said that he'd heard some of the stuff that was coming out in this theme and that we'd be "very happy." I asked if he meant the Black Pearl, and he said yeah, and stuff beyond the Pearl. I tried wheedling more info out of him, but he said he couldn't talk about it. But it was a backhanded confirmation we will be seeing at least one more wave of POTC sets!
