  3. I'm not convinced of this after i heard how much money some parrents spend on the Christmas/birthday gifts for their kids. The parents buy it because their kids want it and the kids want it because it's cool to build big sets with older recommended age than theirs. And i guess LEGO has similar thoughts when i look at the instructions of the 42056 Porsche I haven't looked at the pictures that closely. Is the drivetrain visible enough that we can say this for sure? All 4WD Vehicles i can remember either had a centre differential (8466), separated-axle propulsion (9398) or articulated steering in the middle between both axles (42030). I'd be slightly disappointed if they'd designed such a "faulty" drivetrain.

I don't remember the exact steps any more, but here's an example i just found in Step 34: I guess calling it "bending" is exaggerated in this case, but it wouldn't be possible without the flexibility of the pieces. This isn't a problem, just something i'm not used to from official instructions, as there would have been a way without "bending" necessary. (English isn't my first language, is there a better word instead of "bending" for this kind of thing?)
  6. On a related note: Is it just me or are the instructions for 42039 bad quality? I remember building it and having to bend the parts in some steps. Having disassembled the model last week i realize that there are some stages of the build where there's only one or two correct next steps. But still, i was taken aback at some steps suggested in the instructions.
  7. I might be wrong here, but haven't nearly all Trucks centre diffs for lower wear of the tires and narrower turning radius; and they get locked only in harsh offroad conditions? I'd say authenticity would be lost without a centre diff, but gained with a diff locking mechanism. Unfortunately i don't think LEGO will ever implement a lockable diff because of customers complaining of a big turning radius, not realising they've locked the diff
  8. I wanted to build a gearbox that wasn't efficient, small or reliable, but based on gearboxes used in real cars. The always present problem is the lack of different sized clutch-gears in LEGO Technic. So the main difference is an idler gear-stage needed to generate the different ratios. The build is quite messy and unstable and it lacks any kinematics for a gear knob. As this was only planned as a proof of concept it's enough for me : The gear ratios are: 1st: 1:3 (0,33) 2nd: 3:5 (0,6) 3rd: 1:1 (1,0) 4th: 5:3 (1,67) 5th: 3:1 (3,0) Rev: 8:15 (0,53) The ratio of reverse is between 1st and 2nd gear, just like in real life. The absolute values are not. Here's a picture of only the gears with each gear ratio colored (Input on the left): I enjoy those small builds without care for good design, only to represent mechanical concepts. This way i have the joy of technic, without the hassle of a huge build that usually accompanies mechanical complexity

  12. I don't quite see how, as the central beam doesn't gain stiffness from it's holes being filled with elastic pins and the side walls would have the same amount of holes filled with blue pins. This lot of Pins only seems to add weight.

  14. I remember building 42009 and being surprised at the huge number of black 2L pins where blue 3L pins would suffice: Has there been any explanation of this at the time of the model?
  15. While building mine i actually thought about your model and couldn't fathom how you managed to create the necessary joints for such a small scale. Then i realized that a universal joint wasn't necessary and any joint leaving 2 degrees freedom in rotation was good enough. Thanks a lot for the pictures, it's great to see your compact solution!

In contrast to all the great builds on this Forum, here's a build that's not properly designed, well engineered or sturdy in any way: I recently realised that i've never properly thought about Gough-Stewart platforms / six-axis platforms / ... and building one out of lego seemed like a logical step. It consists of two hexagons, six mini-LAs and two sets of universal mounting points to bring it all together. And here's a small gif of it working: I seldom get any stuff built. Most of my ideas are quite big and when i start to build them, i'm always losing myself in perfecting little details and end up being frustrated that i didn't made any visible progress. So this small and fast build was fun and still gives me a satisfactory level of complexity.

  18. Here's the final Version for now: After i realized how strong the pneumatics are, i made some rudimentary reinforcements. And now i have a new stand for my unfinished 42056: I really wish i had the necessary filming equipment to give you a sense of scale. It's whicked to see such a big model move with such ease: @mocbuild101 thanks for your encouraging words. The building process was fun throughout and seeing the finished model really gives me a sense of accomplishment
  19. This looks awesome. I'm excited to see the finished model. Do you think the thin pneumatic cylinder will have enough power at this position? The Lever seems to be quite small.

  21. It's a nice change to see a fully detailed engine in contrast to the always same one from Lego. You could have used universal joints as connection between the cylinder and connecting rod so you wouldn't have needed to glue those precious CV-Joints

  23. You could try to connect a cylinder directly to the hose from the pump. if it's still weak, the problem is in the pump. If it's strong, you should check your plumbing
  24. Yeah, i was actually quite surprised to find twelve hose connectors in my collection. Then i had to use them, to good effect as it seems
  25. @mocbuild101, you've been successful. Here's Version four, one bricklink Order away from being finished: The new joints are simpler, better and sturdier. Pneumatics V2 really is easier to build with. The new interface is much more intuitive too.
