    Bartholomew's Border Brewhouse

Thank you very much! Dark green is my favorite LEGO color Thank you so much! If you're interested, the picture links to my Flickr stream, where you'll find four additional shots. I have added an explanation of the barrel to the original post. That picture links to a step-by-step description if you want to read it as well Absolutely! Thanks for your kind words. It certainly doesn't take something big to be great and I'm glad you appreciate this house! I really appreciate that! Goofy was definitely what I was going for here- kind of whimsical and droopy Bartholomew most certainly likes thirsty visitors- as long as there's a flagon or two left for him! (or three, or four...) Thanks very much for your words! I added a breakdown of the barrel to the original post. I actually don't mind the pin-holes in the tree, but your suggestion of wrapping the tree gives me some great inspiration and ideas for future trees. Thank you Thank you so much! I'll definitely be building whenever I get the chance . I've got a big move coming up and a little adjustment period but after that I should be back on schedule! Just make sure you keep posting builds because you're my biggest inspiration . I added a breakdown of the barrel to my original post too!

    Bartholomew's Border Brewhouse

Thanks! I'm particularly fond of this style as well and I plan to build more like it! Thanks! They're just meant to be fantasy plants of whatever sort your mind desires . I added them for their color and the bits of height they added to the terrain. Thank you so much- I really appreciate it! Thank you very much Graham!
  3. Hey all, Here's a build I put together that experiments with forced perspective and macro photography with a shallow focal depth. The background is four studs deep with one layer of hills, two layers of mountains, and a layer of sky. Comments and criticism are very welcome- please tell me what you like and dislike so that I can improve on this type of scene!

    MOC: Rosenborg Castle

This is quite striking! Excellent realistic detailing on the windows and all of the edges. Nice work!

    Forced Perspective and Photography

First, thank you all very much for such detailed, helpful, and well-thought-out feedback! It helps a TON and I truly appreciate it I'm with you- they definitely rise up too quickly. This is about all my camera can do at this range but I could have easily shifted the mountains back a bit. I'll try adding a blur to them and see if that makes it look better this time around! I agree- I wanted the mountains to rise up more gradually and I think I just got a little carried away when I was building them! My camera is in macro mode and at its limit on focal length (3.4) for this so I've pretty much maxed out the camera's abilities here. I don't actually have Photoshop but I think GIMP will do the trick for adding a blur as well. I'll try that and I'll change the color of the word "we" while I'm at it. Or maybe I'll add some more white space. Both are excellent suggestions, so maybe I'll just try them both . I'll post again with the changes I make! Thank you very much! I was pleased with how the snow turned out too, so I'm quite glad you agree. Thank you! I'm glad you like how the snowy peaks look! You're totally right, and I did not think of that at all. That's an excellent idea and I think it would add to Captain Dee's suggestion of adding more layers of foothills too. Definitely something I will try out next time I build FP mountains! Thanks for your input! Thank you very much! I'm working to improve my FP right now so I'm glad you like how it looks.

    The Docks of Isil Oro

Hey all, here is my most recent build for the Lands of Roawia Role-Playing Game over on Merlin's Beard. Depicted is the fishing pier in the port city of Isil Oro. There are plenty of details to find and a piece of each building pays tribute to a different builder who inspired it. Comments and criticism are always welcome! [GoT] Craster's Keep

As others have said, that base shape is really appealing and the white joystick parts look fantastic as frozen plants. I really love the dark brown building and the tree as well. Beautiful build!

    The Docks of Isil Oro

I'm glad you enjoy those little details! I was trying to diversify my style a bit so I'm very happy to hear that it worked. Thank you Thank you very much! I truly appreciate your words. Thanks a million! I'm happy to hear that you like it so much Thank you! I'm still building up my collection of minifig heads because I love seeing MOCs with great expressions- it just brings the build to life a bit, I think. Thanks again! Thank you so much! I appreciate that. Thank you! I'm really glad you like it Wow, thank you very much! I really wanted to make the waves look like they were moving and it makes me very happy that you see that effect in them.

Castle MOC - The Davlan Holm Chronicles

Fantastic use of those wedge plates around the base of the cottage. It really makes the foundation look like it sinks into the ground and adds some wonderful realism! I'm also a big fan of the battle sequence on the bridge. Nice work!

    An unexpected visit

Excellent use of that wall technique! I really like the side window with the bench below it and the other little details, like the hatchet and rough stone steps to the stream.

[Moc] Robin Hood - The Merry Robber

This looks fantastic, Matthew. The book base is perfect and the Robin Hood scene is instantly recognizable. Awesome job!

    The Docks of Isil Oro

Thanks Graham! Thank you! I've been wanting to try out that lattice technique for a while so I'm glad you like how it turned out! Haha yeah I was wondering when someone would throw that out there. Good thing LordDan knew that answer because I had no idea! Thank you! Thank you very much- glad you like it! Thank you! That's definitely the feeling I was going for and I'm glad it came across nicely Thank you so much! I really appreciate that- thank you! Thank you very much! Thanks, I really appreciate it! I really like the shack too and it was by far my favorite of them to build. Thanks for answering that- I had no idea! Hey, I wouldn't have known you weren't a native speaker if you hadn't told me . I debated doing an open pier but decided to go with a solid dock in the style of the inspiration pictures I used. It would have looked nice as an open one too though Thank you very much for your feedback! Thank you! Thanks! Very glad to hear that. What kind of project are you working on? Thank you very much- though I can't take credit for the tower roof. I originally saw it in This MOC by Gilles Gaer, and it looks really magnificent on his large scale.

Off the Edge of the Map

No problem! Yes it's really not bad shaping the hull like that Adding additional attachment points helps to control the curve and make the sides a bit sturdier, so I'll try to do that on any future ships. The hardest part was adding the fore and aft castles, but those just took a bit of fiddling. As you said, it really isn't too complicated!

Off the Edge of the Map

Hey all, here is my latest build for the Lands of Roawia LEGO role-playing game on the Merlin's Beard forum. This is my first large scale ship and I really hate using LEGO prefab pieces of any kind, so I wanted to create a realistic brick-built curved hull. I present the Spirit of Lenfald: Four Masts Fully Rigged Ship 4A She's a solid 77 centimeters long from stem to stern and all LEGO except for custom sails and rigging. All comments and criticism are most welcome! Aaron

    Battle of Waterloo: "Steady lads!"

Fantastic presentation Gary! That's a beautiful formation you have going there. I'm excited to see your full collaborative build once it's done!

Off the Edge of the Map

Thank you Gary! I'm glad it was better than you were expecting:) Ok, here are the few WIP pictures I have. I wish (and thought) I had taken more, but unfortunately I didn't, so I really hope this sheds some light on the hull technique I used. The basic concept is to build long strands of 1x4 tiles layered over 1x4 plates and then attached them to technic bricks attached to supported lift arms that are set at an angle. I'm sorry I don't have more pictures, but I hope this helps!

Off the Edge of the Map

Thanks LTFalcon! Yeah I had originally planned on rigging it much more carrack-like, but I just couldn't help myself and ended up rigging her like a galleon. I do plan on doing something more distinctly medieval in the future

I appreciate that! I don't actually have anything on LEGO Ideas at this time but maybe sometime in the future I'll post something. Just to clarify, this is legitimate physical LEGO, not LDD. The backgrounds are edited in after I take pictures but I always build with real LEGO. And I totally agree; I'm not a fan of building in LDD and I find it much more satisfying to build with actual LEGO.

    MOC: Dain II Ironfoot

You continue to impress with these brick-built dwarves! Your parts usage is utterly ingenious and the shaping of both Dain and his boar is incredible. I'm simply amazed by this and I have spent a long time looking (and zooming in) at it.

Off the Edge of the Map

Thank you! I really appreciate your words Ok I will post some 800x600 pictures on here right now then- thanks for the info! That's no trouble at all! I'll just need a bit of time as I am traveling at the moment. I don't have as many WIP shots as I wish I had taken but it should be enough for you to get a good warm-and-fuzzy about the technique. I'm glad you picked up on that! This is actually intended as precisely what you mentioned- a fictional carrack/galleon hybrid. I've been calling her a galleon because of her rigging just to keep things simple, but I'm very happy that you noticed the elements of a carrack. That makes me quite happy

    Crunching Footsteps

This is a perfect example of simple elegance. I love how much detail you packed into such a small base and all of the colors flow perfectly together. I absolutely love that minifigure too!

    Vitruvian Minifig Mosiac

As I said on Flickr, this is outstanding, highly impressive, original, and artistic- the golden combination for me! Awesome work man.

Off the Edge of the Map

Thanks for your feedback! I totally agree with you about the bow and I think there is definitely something that can be done to improve it. Do you have any suggestions or personal experience with building this kind of bow? I really appreciate your words and I'm glad that all of the features you mentioned turned out well. I do have some additional photos and some WIP pictures, I'm just not sure if I have any of the inner design of the sterncastle. I can try to describe the technique to you: The sterncastle is sloped both forward and inwards to achieve its look, so I had to have multiple axes of rotation. To accomplish this, I used these pieces: http://www.bricklink.com/PL/3700.jpg?0 http://www.bricklink.com/PL/2780.jpg?1 http://www.bricklink.../PL/32013.jpg?0 http://www.bricklink.com/PL/4519.jpg?0 http://www.bricklink.../PL/32054.jpg?0 http://www.bricklink.com/PL/2817.jpg?0 The 1x2 technic brick with pin hole is then attached by only one of its studs to the edge of a column of bricks. This is mirrored on the opposite side of the ship as well. The single attachment points allowed range of motion from side to side (to match the angle of the curved hull) while also slanting anything placed on top of the modified plates both forward and inward. I added long reddish brown plates on top of the modified plates on which to build the sides of the aftcastle. These plates are also supported near the very stern by support columns topped with tiles so as not to put pressure on the already-stressed curved hull beams. I'm not sure how understandably I explained that, but I am currently away from home so I can't build and photograph an example. If you'd like me to to do that I will do so upon my return home, as well as post some WIP shots. Thanks again!

    [MOC] The Boss battle

That pose looks really nice! Great work on making such a posable figure and the circled torches give it that "video game boss level" feel. I like it!
