  1. No surprises that you're the one to spot the bargain first Grum I got it a fortnight ago for £90, if only I had waited I could have saved another tenner... Actually, if I hadn't bought one already I'd be tempted to get two copies and use the £20 off code (TDX-WYMJ). It's still £80 each, but it would be a quick and easy way to get another set of the tyres, red rims and lime pieces.
  2. I tried this recently and it definitely works. It's not quick so it's not much use for this fan, and the motor from the Renewable Energy set is a much better fit, but the M-motor can be back-driven with an XL.
  3. Fantastic small-scale small MOC! And there's still room inside for a minifig Jeremy Clarkson
  4. You could say it's for ... -> ... data mining.
  5. Thanks for the review, it's a shame that it doesn't quite mesh with the A-model but the mods needed to do so don't seem difficult. I understand the use of a (smooth) panel in the chute, but it looks like the 3x11 panel in the 5-wide chute leads to most of the gaps that small pieces get stuck on. There are a lot of 13/15-length beams left, maybe it would have been better to use these in the chute instead.
  6. Hi there. 1) That's a bummer, I've ordered from Lego - I'm also in the UK - a few times without issue, although I've never ordered PF parts. They can be significantly cheaper on some common pieces, but for the most desirable ones (i.e. new wheels/tyres/pnuematics, etc.) it's quicker and usually cheaper to go to Bricklink or BrickOwl. Tesco would be my recommended high street retailer as well, when you combine their seasonal sales with Clubcard offers you can get a lot of Lego for a relatively low price! A word of warning about Ebay though ... make sure you have a good idea of what you're buying first. I've had to go back-and-forth a number of times on misleading descriptions and shoddy packaging, but it works both ways and you can pick up more than you expected as well. When I emerged from my dark ages Ebay was a fantastic place to look for old sets, but now that I've got almost all of the out-of-production sets I wanted, it's much less useful for me. 2) LDD. It's not perfect, but it's invaluable for getting a look (if not a feel) for a model in the early stages, and it can save a lot of time/effort if used wisely in the "endless" cycle of building, refining and rebuilding a model. 3) It depends. I do not enjoy making mistakes in an official set, but for MOCs or mods it doesn't bother me nearly as much. Of course, a total rebuild to undo a mistake would be a pain, regardless of what the build was... 4) I really would recommend Bricklink for this sort of thing, unless you know that there is a set that will supply you with the majority (as in 50+%) of the missing pieces - I assume you've seen the Rebrickable feature that shows you what pieces you need and which sets would help you get most of them? If you live near a Lego store you could also go there to buy PF parts, in my experience this is one area where buying directly from Lego is almost always the cheapest option. Because I can do this, I also avoid having to order these parts online.
  7. Looks brilliant, performs just as well. One of the best big mobile cranes I've ever seen. Do you have any close-up/WIP pictures of the brick-built actuator?
  8. I'm going to have to go against the grain and state that I do not like this review... ...because I have the CLASS sat in a box right next to me but I can't build it for another week, and after reading this review I really really want to! Crisp and clean photography, as expected for you Jim. It's a little worrying to see that lime literally is the new yellow (colour variation), but the set really is flagship-worthy, and in any other year it would rightly be the highlight of the releases.
  9. Great spot, I was a bit puzzled as to why the Claas wasn't in the Technic line. With certain current events reducing the potential saving on European Amazon discounts, this should be the best price for anyone [in the UK] who doesn't want to wait for the better part of a year. I've ordered mine to pick up tomorrow. Time to see what these tyres are made of* *Anyone who replies with "rubber" will have a large tub of Mega Blocks waiting for them at home...
  10. She knew exactly how to punish him then! Just the mere thought of losing all their Lego should be enough to keep any AFOL's libido in check
  11. Congratulations! Unfortunately the budget didn't stretch to two, but I will be eagerly looking forward to how this progresses.
  12. Yeah, I can only add to the temperature woes; it's currently 32° at my desk, and that's the shaded area! Luckily I haven't built anything recently, because I tend to leave my Lego out overnight and if any soft parts (pneumatic tubing mostly) were directly under the skylight then I think they would have suffered by now...
  13. Gamepad support and battery-only mode, those are two fantastic additions. I'll keep the interest up as much as I can and hope that the typical near-end surge gives you the funding you need!
  14. Ironically, the fact that so much power can be derived from one BuWizz makes me far less inclined to back it for two of them... but I do want this to succeed and I wouldn't mind putting a bit more towards the funding goal, up to what I would have paid for one BuWizz if it could already be purchased. As for the timing, I seem to remember SBrick's Kickstarter launching late May/early June 2014, so it's not a huge difference. Of course, SBrick didn't have the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Bucket Wheel Excavator, Claas Xerion and Volvo EW160E as competitors for AFOLs' cash!
  15. That's an understandable response, and one I would agree with ... mostly. But this has to be balanced with commercial appeal because ultimately Joe Public are worth far more in terms of sales (and therefore the future direction of Technic sets) than us AFOLs are, as the sold-out-in-most-places 42056 demonstrates - despite what most of us consider to be serious flaws, it is seemingly no less popular for it. If we do see a UCS-style line for supercars and it continues the success started by the 911 GT3 RS, could we then see "space" in the regular Technic lineup for more obscure models?
  16. Doesn't the 919 have a turbocharged V4, and not a V8? Apart from that though, it's looking good so far!
  17. Here are the questions I have: 1) How goes the development if the Android app? Hopefully there can be something learnt here from the troubles Vengit had with the SBrick - which is working flawlessly for me now, but it took over a year to get there 2) As other have asked, are there any plans for hardware controller integration? Again, even when my SBrick was fixed it didn't see much use until I could pair my controller to it (thanks again imurvai), so having this out of the box would be great 3) Does everyone backing at higher tiers get the $5 tier "secret" reward? I do love me some secrets Also, it does seem rather curious that the early bird offer for 2 x BuWizz ends up costing more per unit then the early bird for one ... anyone who looks at the PPU for both tiers would probably only back one as I have done. However I don't think you can change it now and I assume you had your reasons for picking the prices you have used. Regardless, I have backed it for one BuWizz. Hopefully it will be fully funded in due course.
  18. I'd back this to last longer than 23 hours 57 minutes! Nice MOC, you've captured the essential lines of the TS050 well. I'm a particular fan of turning the red panel round to better recreate the sculpted sidepod.
  19. Whoops, I read that as 42042, my bad I would still give the Unimog a look though, there's a thread on here where someone made an "Ultimate Unimog" out of all the best fixes and mods. Oh, 8455 is also worth your time. It's quite old now, but legendary for the sheer volume and complexity of pneumatics (10 cylinders!).
  20. I can think of a few, but if I were you I would look for these first: 8110 - A fine set on its own (albeit with a glaring flaw - it's steering), but the sheer scope and ease of modding the set makes it stand out. 42043 - Like 8110, but more recent. In particular, the chassis and steering stand out as solid, clever pieces of design. 8258 - Still one of the best looking vehicles TLG has designed, and provides some excellent functionality on top.
  21. Yeah, V2 receivers are the better choice for replacing the SBricks, as they were introduced to handle the current draw from two L-motors. Good to see another AFOL brought into the fold!
  22. Well unless Lego have gone back to wooden toys, then it's not on Porsche's UK shop at least...
  23. Ah Sariel, where would AFOLs be without your acerbic wit and furry eye candy?! There's probably some bias in this comment because your opinion on the Porsche is very close to my own, but your review explained everything clearly and you presented your thoughts concisely. The 3 stars for price has probably come from the segment near the end of the video where Blakbird says that in his opinion $300 is a decent price because it cost him more to build his supercar MOCs, all of which had fewer pieces, and most of them were 1:10 as opposed to 1:8. On the other hand, I'm as confused about the 5-star building experience as you are! Jim talks about trying to capture the overall experience (from unboxing to building) in his review, so there may be a bit of this in the decision.
  24. This review is about as comprehensive as I could have hoped for. In particular I really liked the questions from various members to add/clarify information about the set - would you consider doing this for the other 2H sets? As for the Porsche, I'm in the unusual position of wanting it to do well so we are more likely to see future "Technic UCS" sets, but not wanting it to buy it myself because the well-documented issues are deal breakers for me. It seems to be "ultimate" in looks only, and while I recognize that this is more than enough for many people, I am not one of them. Even at a reduced price (e.g. 75-80%) this set isn't appealing to me at the moment. Thanks for the heads up Jim. If only TLG did as good a job with the Porsche as you did with its review!
