The MB Arocs outriggers, niche or good part, I can't decide.
Jay Psi replied to Leif's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I had a feeling you would say that However I agree, these parts are more than just outriggers. Even in the Arocs they are also used as the telescopic part of the crane arm. I think the point of the housing and gear rack combination is to provide a sturdy mechanism for a sliding motion, one that is more rigid (and can therefore handle bigger loads) than making an equivalent mechanism out of multiple panels/liftarms. -
For anyone trying to nab the bigger sets in this deal - specifically the 42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs - there are very few sets to go around. In my nearest 10 stores (Greater Manchester) only 6 were in stock. Do we know if this offer will allow duplicate purchases? I remember this wasn't allowed last year.

[HELP] Which Technic Set Should I Buy?
Jay Psi replied to Siegfried's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well here's a nice dilemma to have ... Tesco are running a Clubcard points deal this weekend which requires £75 of Lego purchases to qualify. The problem? The only set I want (42038) isn't available, I have the flagships they are selling* and what's left isn't of much interest. So what sets should I look at for a total of £75-80 from the following: 42029 - £58.65 42024 - £49.48 42023 - £45.94 42037 - £34.48 42038 - £33.50 42022 - £25.28 42036 - £24.64 42035 - £22.97 42034 - £14.09 42036 - £13.74 42032 - £13.65 42027 - £13.54 42021 - £11.67 42031 - £7.97 42020 - £7.34 *If you haven't bought any recent flagships yet (42009, 42030, 42039) then this would be a good time to get them and then potentially save £75 on the Arocs. The 24 Hour Race Car is very conveniently priced at £77.61 perhaps just for this purpose. They've sold out of 42008 though (only available through resellers), so you can't use that set to get the extra points. -
42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245
Jay Psi replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
They are, and from experience I wouldn't trust them with a substantial purchase either. I still shop there for BDs and games but otherwise I'd give those stores a wide berth. It does more or les confirm the expected UK RRP of £170 though. Too much for me, I'll have to wait a while before I get my hands on this one. -
[MOC] 10x6 Foden Crane Truck W. Extending Trailer
Jay Psi replied to Kiwi_Builder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's a very well built trailer, you've got the extend-and-retract section nailed. The rest of the MOC is extremely nice too, of course! The cabin does look a little bit too boxy for a Foden, I was expecting the windscreen to be a stud behind the front grille at the bottom as well as two studs behind at the top, or is that just a design quirk of the older Fodens? As for embedding youtube links, you just need to inset the link into the formatting with the http protocol - the link you have given won't embed because you have used the https protocol. Remove the s and watch what happens : [media] -
LEGO Technic related clothing and accessories
Jay Psi replied to TangersTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
At that price you could count me in for a hat Paul. I assume shipping will be a little cheaper to the UK (than to Oz) but even if it wasn't I'd put up the money for one. -
SBrick General Discussion
Jay Psi replied to Nofer89's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Without sounding too rude, are you sure the 42030 SBrick Version. the button for the trans-orange lights (styled like a hazard warning) is pressed on and off repeatedly to create the blinking effect. But I've not tried this profile so I might be talking out of an orifice It's worth remembering that the profile designer is still in beta so perhaps the issue is related to that as well.- 761 replies

BMW i8 Spyder
Jay Psi replied to Sheepo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well that's the "Best MOC I'll See" award wrapped up for July... The only thing I would dare criticise is that the front grille looks a little off with the 1x3 thin liftarms doubled up on both sides, but if you tried it with 1 liftarm each side and rejected it for some reason then you can ignore me! As for your question, if your next model was a "regular" supercar then I would feel that something was missing without the brakes and sequential gearbox. However for the i8 it's more noteworthy to mimic the hybrid drive of the road car because it's unique to the i8 in a mass-produced car (I think? I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong). If you are going to continue MOC-ing unusual cars with unique or seldom seen features then I wouldn't mind not seeing the brakes or gearbox again. -
[MOC] The Mistress
Jay Psi replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It also gives more space to house the (usually) massive engine in its ideal position, as close and as low down in the middle of the chassis as possible. This means a lower centre of gravity, less load transfer, better weight distribution, etc. which matter when your car is meant to be built for ultimate performance. Even in most grand tourers (unless they are boat-like in length), the rear seats aren't much good if you are over 5 and still have legs. -
Modification and improvements of 41999. Pimp my BOSS!
Jay Psi replied to rm8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You can hide the red 2-axles in the model, so unless you're very particular about not wanting any red peeking out from beneath the connectors then you don't need to replace those. Apart from that almost all the red parts are liftarms as Jim has said. I changed everything I could to black myself, including the 2-axles! But my 41999's bottom half still isn't fully black because the frames are only available in LBG. Still looks good to me though.- 250 replies

Creating empty, useless topics
Jay Psi replied to mahjqa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Honestly, other forums I frequent that have a "like" feature still suffer from a poor signal:noise ratio. What happens in my experience is that you get a similar amount of short "I agree" posts, but a lot of lurkers or casual browsers who wouldn't have posted anyway will give likes instead. So it's good for getting some form of extra participation, but I don't think it will cut the number of agreement posts significantly if at all. While I'm not particularly annoyed by the litany of superfluous threads and posts (Eurobricks is the least popular forum I use, I guess I'm just used to quantity) I would support any measures that arise from this discussion. Even to me it seems a bit weird on a Lego forum to not have anything to show for all the words in your post. -
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the Ugliest of them all ...
Jay Psi replied to AOW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
No (lack of) love for 42039? I get that it's supposed to be a mix of modern LMPs, which themselves are not known for being pillars of aesthetic design, but even by those standards 42039 is ugly (it is a very odd mix of Toyota TS030/40 at the front and older closed-top LMPs such as the Bentley EXP Speed 8 at the back), which makes it my contender for the least attractive set! Let's not forget that the set could have been much better looking as well ... -
[TEASER] PKW's simple chassis series
Jay Psi replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Too Long; Didn't Read. Usually used when a post is very long or never gets to making a point. In the context of a Lego discussion where a lot of the intricacies of building are best communicated with images (pictures, diagrams, etc.), your OP might be considered too long/too full of text. So yes, the picture you posted has helped me at least. I think the way you've planned it is good though, with a post for each separate topic. -
Sets that haunt you
Jay Psi replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Since I got out of my Dark Age the one set I wanted more than any other was 8480. I remember seeing it at my friend's house (not realizing it had gone out of production) and doing some quick maths on how much the motor was geared down for the various functions. I stopped when I got to >400:1 and had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Then I asked my friend where he/his parents got it, only to hear the cursed reply, "Sorry mate, I got it a couple of years ago now. Lego don't sell the Space Shuttle anymore." I was already a year into my Dark Age at this point ('99-00), but this was the moment when I decided in typical surly teenage fashion that everything Lego could suck it - if I couldn't own this masterpiece then there was no point bothering with anything else. Thankfully it only took thirteen years for my attitude to turn around, and the Space Shuttle was the first out of production set I looked for. It was also the set that drove me to discover Bricklink, although I actually bought it from ebay (damaged box, but sealed bags for a couple of pounds more than I was going to pay at a BL store). -
42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245
Jay Psi replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the confirmation from both of you (I checked Brickpicker as well and apparently the US price of 8421 hasn't moved much so I was starting to doubt myself). If someone had the time and know-how to reliably sell on the other 1800 parts, they could build up quite a collection of RC motors, pneumatic brackets and metal hooks just from buying 8421 sets on the cheap! Back to Rockbrick's original dilemma, if the only way I could get 42043 was to get rid of 8421 I'd do it. Even though I like the mobile crane a lot the Arocs is my most hotly anticipated flagship since I got out of my Dark Ages. -
42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245
Jay Psi replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm not sure about that, at least not in the UK. Since 42009 has been widely available used the prices of 8421 sets have fallen quite a bit. Even last year I picked up two complete 8421s for less than the RRP of 42009 (£149.99 at the time). Maybe I'm just particularly good at scalping auction sites though... A quick check on Bricklink also shows that complete 8421s in good condition can be had for less than £100 (excluding P&P). Or are you referring to parting it out and getting the most value out of the pneumatic brackets, RC motor, 32-long axle, metal hook, etc? I'm still struggling to see how that could make the €230+ the Arocs will likely cost but I can understand that with some patience this would get more money overall. If I had to guess, the UK RRP would be £170 like 42030 was. -
42025 VS 42030 VS 42039 VS 42043
Jay Psi replied to TheNextLegoDesinger's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'll add my name to the "oldest first" brigade (which would be 42025 in this case), not just for the reasons mentioned but also because outside of special offers, older sets that are still in production usually have larger discounts on them. So if your experience matches mine going for older sets first should work out a bit cheaper in the long run. -
[C-MODEL] 42030 Telehandler
Jay Psi replied to MrTekneex's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Perfect timing MrTekneex - I bought 42030 this morning, just before I saw this thread! It looks and works just as well as your other C-Models too. -
[MOD/MOC] FullRC Version of NKubate's Predator
Jay Psi replied to metulskie8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes. Yes I do. I think the wing looks much better with the quarter ellipses flush with the panels, it gives the wing a sleeker (and more aerodynamic) look. I know it juts out at the bottom now but that doesn't spoil the top-side profile. Thanks for making the change. -
[MOD/MOC] FullRC Version of NKubate's Predator
Jay Psi replied to metulskie8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like it. While I do like the original more I think there's room for such an extensive modification, and crucially you've done a very good job with motorizing the model. The quarter-ellipse in the rear wing still looks off to me but that can't be helped, there's no way to attach it one stud lower (to the panels). -
[NMOC] Pagani Huayra
Jay Psi replied to darksheep's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm pretty sure the HoF is only open to Eurobricks members. But there's no doubt that this Huayra is as good as anything in the Hall of Fame. I think Francisco Hartley has the wireframe, 8448-esque style of building bodywork down to a tee. -

[MOC REVIEW] Nathanael Kuipers' Predator
Jay Psi replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Someone else Most people would be able to answer this better than me but here it goes... Gearboxes aren't only necessary in motorized sets. In fact, many RC capable MOCs don't have a gearbox because it would add too much complexity or waste the power from the motor in driving gears that could be put towards propelling the MOCs As for gearboxes in non-RC MOCs, remember that one of the "aims" of the Technic line is authenticity - to replicate the functions of the original as accurately as possible, given the available parts. Real supercars have gearboxes, so it makes sense that Lego supercars should emulate this. In recent years the trend has moved away from transmission gearboxes to function gearboxes, presumably because the focus tests LEGO conduct show that there is more selling potential going down this route. But the best thing about Lego is that if you don't like what's available, you are free to do it your own way Edit - This is an excellent article to read if you want to know more about how the increasing use of motorization has impacted Technic sets and MOCs. -
Purchase advice - 8043 and 8110
Jay Psi replied to rynoster's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm only going to echo what's already been said, don't turn down the 8110! Apart from the steering (which can be fixed in a variety of ways depending on your needs) it's a brilliant set. Even as a parts pack it's worth the money but I think the size and number of functions it offers makes it one of the greatest sets of the "modern" Technic era. However, the ace-in-the-hole is the ease of which the Unimog can be modded - RC conversions, extra pneumatic functions, mechanical or linear actuator based add-ons, mostly thanks to the PPO/PPTO on both front and rear. And JB is on the money - if you can find one for a good enough price, 8455 is an absolute must for any pneumatics fan. I doubt we'll ever see another set with 10 (large) pneumatic cylinders... -
[MOD] "Red Predator" ,Nathanael Kuiper's modified Predator
Jay Psi replied to metulskie8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Black is the new black, right? I really like the wheel covers of the Redator and I would prefer the rear wing to the original if the 3x5 thin ellipse liftarm could be moved down a stud so it sits more flush with the panels. I appreciate the exercise of making it flex axle-less but in this case I prefer the look with the flex axles.
