[MOC] Suzuki Samurai Rock Crawler
Pego replied to Pego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Okay, so I went by boat to a nearby island. It turned out to be an absolutely amazing rock crawling playground. I was there for 3 hours, and there's still much more to crawl there. As you watch the video, you can see the differences in the two trucks, the Jeep is wider, heavier and has much better center of gravity. But it also lacks in ground clearance and power to weight ratio (I think), even though it has two motors compared to the Suzukis single L motor. The Jeep is so much heavier combined with lower output from the battery box that it can actually stall itself on the rocks. The Samurai has much more suspension flex which makes it good on the rocks, but a little unpredictable on hill climbs. Torque twist is also apparent. The biggest diffence still has to be sand performance, in which the Jeep sinks and the Samurai just floats over it. The conclusion: The Jeep is for hill climbs, the Suzuki is for rock crawling and flat ground stuff. Thanks guys! Maybe it should, but it can't, TLG doesn't produce minizip cables :) Who wouldn't like the white rims? haha I've never had any problems with bevel gears in any models (except the Jeep, it destroyed one). ... well actually there was (with this one) one mysterious bang when I got a rear wheel stuck, but nothing broke, so I'm not sure what happened EDIT: Here's the LDD file for the chassis, I'll do the body later https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3uQRNR6UbBWMzB4YTVERnBUb0E/view?usp=sharing -

Here are some outtakes from the first video (it flips a lot) It might make you smile, it might make you cry Thanks! I got it built, now I have to find someone to drive it. A comparison video will come sooner or later. -

Thanks everybody! Well, it's actually just leaning on other rocks when it looks like it should tip over, because it is only 13 studs wide (14 at the tires) it isn't as stable as it looks, and falling over isn't as impressive :). I like a challenge though. The gear ratio is 1/5, though if I could magically change it to whatever, I would make it a little slower yet. Yes you may be honest, it is so rare around here to get real criticism. I agree that it isn't that great looking, but I didn't look that much on blueprints, instead on the toyish looking Samurai on the youtube channel Rc suzuki samurai. The thing that I'm happiest with is the front axle, using wheel hubs, but keeping good ground clearance and wheels straight upright. Also there is no chance to pop any CV joints. I'll be working on it! I can't promise a date though. I might be able to have my CJ5 built at the same time, and drive them in one video, would that be more interesting than just one 4x4? -

I was wery inspired by RM8´s fj40, so I of course wanted to build something similar. I´m going to build a Jeep CJ5 which should be fairly easy to build (body), but the tricky part will be getting the motors under the hood and (hopefully) fitting the battery under the seats. The servo motor and the two L motors will fit under the long hood. WIP by Pego's Legos, on Flickr WIP by Pego's Legos, on Flickr WIP by Pego's Legos, on Flickr WIP by Pego's Legos, on Flickr

[MOC] Ural 532301 8x8 Trial truck
Pego posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hello! Here is my new creation, a model of a Ural 532301. It's features are: 8x8 drive from a Xl motor Steering from an M motor 2 speed gearbox from an M motor (gear ratios 1:10 and 1:3.333) 4 live axles with flex axle leaf springs Controlled via Sbrick It is really fun to drive around as it goes pretty much anywhere it fits. It is fairly fast in second gear too. It has tons of torque in first gear, but the limiting factors are the u-joints that like to break into pieces when all the weight is on one axle. If I do, I'll charge a small fee for it. What would be a good amount? -

Thanks! Balloon tires wouldn't work, they'd rub each other. With some modification it would work well though. Thanks! I'm very pleased with the drivetrain myself, it doesn't torque-twist axle 3 when power goes to axle 4 for example, as a single-driveshaft one would. Thank you! -
[HELP] 2 Link vs 4 Link Live Axles
Pego replied to __________________________'s topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The system Sylvian showed is teoretically not 4 link, but it functions the same The upper links are narrow at the axle, the lower ones wide at the axle. (4 link) The lower links don't actually have to be triangulated, but it helps for sideways stability -
[HELP] 2 Link vs 4 Link Live Axles
Pego replied to __________________________'s topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Because you have to attach 4 links onto both the axle and the chassis, taking up space and making the axle more complicated. With the ball joint piece it's very easy to attach everything to it, and it doesn't take much vertical space. Still 4 link suspension is always worth it for the realism and to avoid negative caster -
[MOC] Tiny Unimog 406 dump truck
Pego posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hello! Here´s another moc that I´ve built: Tiny Unimog by Pego's Legos, on Flickr The functions are: 4x4 drive (M motor) Steering (M motor) Dumping (M motor) It has no suspension as it would be impossible to fit it in there, but the chassis has some flex (maybe 5-10 degrees) so it´s not too bad offroad. I wanted to replicate an Unimog 406 as it has big tires and a short chassis. I want to make another similar Unimog with a bucket up front to be able to load up this one. Thanks! LDD file is coming, possibly today. Compared to a Lego rechargable battery the batteries have maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the runtime, and a little more voltage. I don´t know much of the AA batterybox though. I´d say, if you have a Lego rechargable BB it´s worth it, if you have the AA BB it´s a must buy! -

Thanks guys! Well, almost, it lacks suspension :) The battery is a 9V with a minizip cable: http://mechnable.com/content/minizip-shop/ It drives like a trial truck; slow and without diffs, it slows down in corners because of the extra resistance -

[HELP] Exposing Motor to Snow
Pego posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I am currently building a small 4wd rally car, but was wondering if it is ok to expose a little bit of the buggy motor to snow (up to the marked point). I know the electronics are up high, but there might be some grease or metal parts in there that could be damaged by the water. Buggy motor question by Pego's Legos, on Flickr -

Thank you! They perform well because of the larger diameter, but also because the buggy doesn't weigh much at all.- 25 replies

I've made a LDD file of the chassis: https://drive.google...iew?usp=sharing It has about 400 pieces. Here's an update: I've improved it quite a bit, slowed down steering, removed friction from the suspension, minimized side-to-side wobble in the front suspension (improving steering) and finally adding larger tires. I also made slight improvements like changing non-friction pins to friction pins in the wheel hubs helping the CV joints to hold up (which they do really well even with the larger tires). I also shot a video in the snow and a new LDD file is coming soon.- 25 replies
