WIP Welcome to Dagaville (pic heavy)

Thanks for the comments everyone. The city has sort of grown organically. There is no plan. Some things are from sets my daughter has gotten from birthdays or other events and then we go out and get another one to expand it to fit in our town. Others are just from things I see and like so when I have the time and money I buy it and build it. A mish mash of everything. The biggest thing is it need to be accessible and playable. There are two rules for the table 1. no "explosions" (that one is for my twin boys as eventually everything leads to something getting blown up with whatever they are playing with) 2. Try to keep the built buildings as is, but anything goes on the empty spaces until a permanent structure finds it's home there.
  3. Hello All, Longtime Lurker with very few posts, so if I have done something wrong here, please let me know. The following is a look at the town my daughter and I have put together. This is what we like to refer to as Dagaville "main street". Like the title says, this is most definitely a work in progress. You will notice a lot of blank spaces, those will be filled with future builds and official Lego Modulars. Some of the intersection baseplates will also be swapped out for straight ones when next I have a chance to get to a Lego store (the nearest is an 8 hour drive away). Next up is a "street view" at the end of main street: The first buildings here are the Highlander Pub and Al's barber. I hope to get another DO in the near future and expand the pub and turn the second floor into a microbrewery and ditch the detective agency all together and move the barber across the street and expand that as well. The main street's major intersection comes complete with traffic lights (although after taking the pictures I noticed my daughter has the vehicles driving UK style, but didn't switch the lights: The highlight of the intersection is the music shop (modified grand emporium), which as you can see (like you'll see with most of the buildings) is not quite finished with some pieces missing (future bricklink orders): The first floor is the record shop: Second floor is the instrument shop: And the top floor is the recording studio. The empty square room in the top right of the picture will have a drum set in it: Diagonally across the intersection is the fire hall. As with most buildings here you will notice it has no roof, this is for play purposes (plus some of the ones that did have a roof kept getting wrecked by my 7 year old twin boys, so I finally just said screw it, no roofs!!): The main entrance: A closeup of the lions heads: and a top-down view of the fire hall: Across the street from the fire hall you will find a pet store with a movie theatre beside it and a cafe/diner beside that: theatre closeup: Theatre top-down view (3 theatres all in different states of being finished): Top-down view of cafe/diner: to the right of the pet shop is a side street that has a vet clinic and some residential (the yellow house will be replaced by another brownstone but mirrored), and I have yet to purchase another road baseplate to finish it off: Vet clinic closeup: top-down view: Beside the fire hall is a train station converted into a bus station with a green space in behind it. the playground is just a prototype with the slide and the bridge being the only permanent pieces: Beside the the bus station is the Police station, also not quite finished and no roof (in some parts) for play purposes. To the right of the station (where you can see a jumble of vehicles) will be another garage for the patrol cars. The current garage is where the prisoner transport vehicles park and unload the crooks: top-down view: Back view of jail cells, break room, and chief's office: Across from the police station is the gas station which I reverse engineered and modified from a picture I saw on flickr which some here might recognize: Top-down view. The yellow bricks are a pop cooler. Beside that is a slurpee machine. In the corner by the door is an ice cream cooler (and a fallen flag from the roof, oops!!) and outside just visible in the window are oil containers. The tall green and white thing beside the building is the propane tank: There is another side street on this end of main street: Which features a juice bar/bakery and will also have a small recycling center across the street in behind the gas station: top-down view: Well, that is it for now. There is room for 6 32x32 size buildings and and 4 16x32 size buildings on the table i built to house our town, so lots more room for new modulars!! Thanks for viewing!!
  4. That looks awesome!! I too am from Regina!! Have you done anymore Regina buildings?

@Professor Brick I do the same thing!! Especially for these modulars. I have nice little town being built up in my basement. I don't play with it, but I like to watch my kids play with the stuff I build. I also like to have a look at the table after they have gone to bed at night and interpret the scenes they have left behind when their attention was shifted elsewhere and the lego was abandoned. Then I reset the table to how I like it to look. And then wait for the next time the Twinado and the girl come down ( I have 6 year old twin boys and an 11 year old girl) to play. When I spend $200 on Lego it's for all of us, so it's more like I spent $50 on each kid and myself.

Thanks parksroad, you said what I was trying to say in a less confrontational way.

I'm not telling him he doesn't belong. Nor was I suggesting he leave the forum. I like hearing his opinion. i'm not new to this forum (I "joined" not long ago, but have been lurking for almost 2 years), but I am not much of a poster either. But his posts on this subject has become just that "crying something sour repeatedly". It's not advancing the conversation. Maybe I should have put it this way: Off the wall, now that we have seen the official pictures, what elements would you change to make it less of a dollhouse and more in the spirit of the original modular line? I'm not much of a moc'er at the moment and don't have access to as many less common pieces to make my building experience more enjoyable and advance my skills and techniques.

I could see someone (maybe me) buying two of these and combining the pool hall/detective office together to make one 32 wide two-storey building and combining the barber shop side to make a funky building with an arched walkway in the middle that leads to a public square or green space in behind it.

Maybe they are talking about the hero factory fist/hand? is it not 1X2X2 designing element? and there is no mention of hero factory parts in press release.

@ Off the wall: The modular line has been taken away from AFOLs and given to rich kids who need TLG to be a substitute for their own imagination This line sounds more like you need TLG to be a substitute for your own imagination. What kid, be they rich, poor, somewhere in the middle, has the money to use a site like bricklink to make a building like this? The may have the imagination to build it, but not the parts, unless they start taking apart the sets they have bought to make this. Then the other sets are in complete. And as for their own imaginations, these toys are designed by adults, whose cognitive abilities are at a more advanced level than a kids. But really, It's a toy. Your original opinion isn't the problem, you are entitled to that, it's that you keep posting it over and over. The people in this topic don't seem to share your opinion about the Modular line. Move on. Start your own post about the suck that is now the modular line and like minded individuals can flock to that post. I'm glad the focus is going back to a more kid friendly design. I hate the toy lines that start out as kids toys and as the older crowd starts to take an interest in it, the line slowly becomes less playable, and more of a "let's not take it out of the box and diminish it's value" collectors item. Toys are meant to be played with, comics are meant to be read, music is meant to be heard, movies are meant to be watched, art is meant to be seen.

Suggestion on first modular building to buy and build?

The Pet Shop is a fun build. I just completed it with my two six year old boys and they love it. I was one of the lucky ones yesterday. Waited until October 1st for the double points and bought the Grand Emporium, which I'm planning on expanding to fill a 32x32 baseplate and turning it into a music shop with a record store on the first floor, an instrument shop on the second and maybe a small recording studio for the third. My Daughter and I started making a record shop to fill a spot in our town, but it was the interior we focused on, not the exterior. Now I have an excuse to upgrade the record shop with the Grand Emporium. It's going to be a fun build!!! I'm not a great MOCer, but I like to MOD.

    Longtime lurker

Hi, Been lurking on these forums for a while but never posted until last night. I've been an AFOL for the past two years now, really getting into Lego building when my daughter got two of the same friends set and we used both sets to make the friends diner (forget the actual set name) bigger and more like an actual building than just a facade. Now my two six year old twin boys are at that age where they are really loving Lego and I have an excuse to use on my wife when she tries to argue when I spend money on Lego. "But, honey, it's for the boys and the girl!!" ;) I prefer City building, but do build in Sci-Fi with the boys. I live in Canada. In Regina, Saskatchewan, where it's cold 11 months (that's an exaggeration) of the year, so there is lots of time for Lego!! Anyway, that's me. Hello.

    Space, uh, ships?

Be gentle on me... long time lurker first time poster. Hope this works. My twin boys and I are big Lego fans. While I am more of a City builder, they are more into the Star Wars/Space thing right now. Every once in a while when their ships and cars and stuff gets all broken up from being thrown too heavily back in the Lego bin/drawers I will take the big pile of bricks and build something for them while they sleep and I watch football to de-stress. I will leave it for them at their spot at the kitchen table for them to discover in the morning before school. these were my attempts at "racing" ships. I don't have names for any of these. And my greebling needs some work, but the boys got a kick out of them and for a first time try I thought they turned out alright.
