Union Pacific Big Boy # 4014

Oh man, I need one in my life..

    First-time shipbuilder

Hello. I normally build trains and City stuff, but my Pirates always dominated my childhood builds and so I wanted to finally give them a worthy vessel to call their own. This ship is not yet named, and I am trying to keep it visually similar to other official ship sets released through the years. When I start building I'll be using set 70098 Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush as the basis, as there are some cheap ones on eBay that don't have minifigures. I am liking the way this lower deck turned out so far, although it's a tad cramped. I plan for it to have two masts and hopefully a decent-sized captain's cabin. I know it's fairly short but I may change that in the future. The only thing I wonder is whether or not I should raise up the forecastle a few bricks so that the middle sits lower than everything else.

    Maersk Train in different colours

I think the green on the BN locos is too dark. Normal lego green is closer to BN's "Cascade Green" shade. Love the SP and D&RGW models, though.

I kind of dropped the ball for a few days due to other stuff going on, but I managed to make some headway last night.

Yeah, no. I've looked around at other people's ship models and the realistic ones look absolutely fantastic, but I don't really want to get into that sort of advanced stuff for this ship. For now trying to keep it simple, but effective.

Yes. Only two. Have to keep it fairly small for display purposes.

Only one stud? Not by one brick?

Thank you LittleJohn, I appreciate it. I think I will raise it up, if for no reason but to help keep it visually interesting.

Hmm, looking at it again you're probably right. I never intended to build the entirety of my ship from the LOTR set. The cannons are already in my collection, as are many of the design elements I have in mind. I was only considering using the LOTR ship set because it has a lot of parts I want to use in other things. If I can't land a fig-less one for as cheap as I think I can, then I will totally change it up and go through BL to get the ship parts I don't have.

PF Battery Box or PF Rechargeable Battery Box

I use the regular PF batt box and have rechargable triple-A batteries for it. Someone else suggested I avoid the rechargeable box just in case Lego dumps PF in the future I can still keep my Triple-A boxes in use. I don't know what "Eneloop" is though.

    WIP Narrow gauge depot

I like the random dark red bricks in the walls. Makes it look aged.

    Maintenance of Way equipment

Hey guys. This isn't anything truly spectacular, but I wanted to share it anyway. I got ahold of three Lego 4200 Mining 4x4's and modified them for railroad purposes. I kept one stock, but added rail wheels and changed the tools. The second got a smaller bed and two tool cabinets, as well as two extra places for more tools, and the third got a cabinet and a small crane. I happened to see a Hi-Rail truck with a crane on it while at work, and the idea took off from there. I also BrickLinked parts to make the four new-style rail workers in the photo. Anyone else have some MoW equipment they want to show off?
  13. The only criticism I have is that the tender is waayy too far from the loco, I think. Other than that it looks nice.

    Making the Jump: Horizon Express

Ehhh.. why not. Here's mine. I need to fix the loco numbers. They don't match. I might try to get one more passenger car, but mine won't get too much longer. I know the real trains are seven or eight cars between each loco, but I just can't afford that.

    [MOC] AGEIR Boxcab (CNJ #1000)

Wow. Not only does it look good, it's also chain-driven! And here I was wondering what to do with my old technic mini-motor. I think I'll be putting mine in a safe place until I find a use for it.

    Maintenance of Way equipment

I have a bunch of the 90's era rail workers. In my mind, the blue-uniform guys are my track workers, and the newer uniform people are train crews. Right now most of my rail workers are on-deck for constructing a bridge. Oh, but some tracks look better overgrown. Like if you had a logging railroad in the sticks? Looks much better with weeds and stuff.

    Making the Jump: Horizon Express

Sure. When it's running around at a decent speed it looks absolutely beautiful.

    [MOC] Alco HH1000 Switcher

That is a beautiful model, Commander Wolf. I love every bit of it. Too bad it's a switcher that is able to have all that PF guts stuffed into it.

    Maersk Train in different colours

    Love that re-color, Musica.
  20. That's true, but scale model trains pull it off.
  21. If using the largest radii curves, do you think body-mounted couplers would work?

    Custom 9V tracks

If you don't like the multi-piece design, why not glue the rails and ties together permanently? Then you will have your single-piece tracks.

    Maersk Train in different colours

What's funny is the Maersk locomotive is actually supposed to be a Norfolk Southern loco. I love the Burlington Northern version posted at the top. I've also seen it done in Milwaukee Road (Orange body with black roof) and Wisconsin Central colors (dark red with yellow pinstripes)

    MOC: Hi-Rail Excavator

You can see the cable connected to the batt box, and the dome on the IR receiver. Your MOC is making me want to put train wheels on my 4203. The model itself looks pretty slick and very believable as being an excavator. Did you ever consider using crawler tracks instead of tires? Then you can have tracks on your tracks.

Steam Loco from the ground up

There is this. I love Sava's work, but maybe the guy is bored with it and just wants to offload the model? Who knows. It's not much different from a scale model railroader selling a loco he has kitbashed extensively. If the guy were selling Sava instructions then that's definitely a problem.
