[MOC] Power Functions Saddle Tank Shunter in Dark Blue

Reminds me of the trains we have here ;)... https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercityrijtuig#/media/File:Intercityrijtuig.jpg It looks so cute driving about! :D

Trial and error it is then. The tender uses 2 ball joints and a turntable, the leader wheels use a single ball joint, but they would steer them selves off the track if I use more. I do use two ball joints for the 4-6-0. The four leader wheels will steer themselves, so they require two joints. With the 4-6-0, the family is complete :). Its boiler is a bit longer (by two studs) and of course the wheel base is a bit different.

Here is my progress :). I've moved the cylinders on both engines. And I've reworked the water tanks on the 2-6-4, and added the coal bunker:

I'd love to! I will look into moving the cylinders, this requires me to enlarge the wheel base for the leader wheels. I can't do much else as the boiler is built around the battery box... Not yet, but I will. It seems like a perfect piece for the job :). The 5 long and 6 long half beams are merely placeholders, I expect to order custom rods when the drive train proves to work without problem. The wheels are all directly drive by the motor, so I am thinking I won't have too much problems. I will need to play around with the connecting rods for sure! Yup. There are some alternatives to the ball couplings so I can change those at will. I'm pretty sure the ball couplings will fail under the load of pulling some carriages.

I love the 2-6-0 class 4mt. However, I did promise a tank engine and I set to work adding the water tanks and rebuilding the nose to match the tank engine nose. It'll be a 2-6-4 this time and if you look closely you'll see small differences left and right. The boiler is 1/3 stud smaller and is set a bit lower. I had to lower the battery box a stud to achieve this. I think it looks really nice though, more in line with the actual 2-6-4 on pictures. I've added the water tanks but I don't like them yet. They are way too square for me. Also, I can only see pictures of a black 2-6-4. I need to get my paint brush!

Thanks! I added the magnets now :). It seems like its done now... but I realised it's not actually a tank engine. I might have to work on a 2-6-4 next!

I had to turn the wheels by hand ;). When I did that, LDD was ok with it. I put a 2x4 brick between the engine and the rails to align the wheels visually. I manipulated the joints until it seemed the wheels were in the right place.

I would imagine something like this: I'd love to build it :). I'm not sure which color yet, I think the green will be rather expensive.

A bit of an update :). I got around to detailing the cab and tender! The cab features controls for (what I imagine would be) the regulator, reverser and brakes on the driver's side. On the stoker side, there are some more controls for the injectors and of course the firebox doors. The tender has a shovel, a lever to operate the door to the coal bin and a gauge to show how much water is left in the tender. The door to the coal bin is halfway open and there is some coal at the bottom. These are normally painted black, but are painted grey so they can be easily seen on this picture. And there is a bit of an update to the front and back of the engine. I've added headlights and looked to British videos for inspiration. The Jacobite in particular was running with a center headlight and the outer ones turned off, so I figured I have to have three lights. I also added a boiler door at the front as the front looked too massive and huge.

    Wheels slipping

I would try putting the powered wheels under the battery box (you want weight for grip) and use the rubber bands on all powered wheels. I have no problems with my 60052...

    My 4-8-8-4 Big Boy Locomotive

Nice job on the tender axles :). It looks like it'll be longer than any engine I'll ever build ;)

I couldn't resist adding a tender :). Also, the engine has been painted green, it looks much better :). About the tender. I started out with a 3 axle tender to follow the real world train, but it looked too short. I tried 3 axles on a longer tender, but that still looked wrong. So, it turned into a 4 axle tender. The wheels are articulated as one would imagine. There is a tiny gap between the tender and engine, only a single stud. I managed to do this with some creative use of articulation. In any case, it looks great and it looks like a single vehicle :).

powered bogies, vertical or horizontal? what is better?

While driving, gravity will keep the train body on the bogies. I think they will wobble a bit when you lift the engine off the tracks depending on the specific design.

Its special all right! I love the rusty roof (are those stickers?) and the overall shape :).

No weaponry and violence in City sets?!

No to guns. I love the aspect of seeing the world as you'd like to see it about it :).

What got you into lego trains!

It's Lego and it's trains. What more do you need? :D. I seem to be collecting cargo trains, I have the yellow and blue ones.

    PF powered steam tank engine

I'll get back to you, Nemo57 ;). The Class 4mt is pretty much done :o. Once I figured out how to deal with the cylinders, the bricks sorted themselves out :D. Here it is: The end result is a steam engine that's about 26 bricks long (only 6 longer than my Class 08!) and 7 bricks wide. It's 9 bricks wide at the cylinders. Let me stress - it's SERIOUSLY small! And, the cab is completely empty, ready for lots of details and a fireman and driver. Are the cylinders in the way of - you know - making a turn? That's what I had to figure out. Lots of Lego steam engines have tiny cylinders to squeeze them in between the boiler and front wheels. I decided to split them - the lower half turns with the leader wheels and the top part is fixed. It looks pretty good to my eyes even though its a little strange in a turn: On a straight track it looks like the front wheel is hidden behind the cylinders, which was what I was going for. Here is the rough shape, I can start adding details and let's not forget a tender!

Its part of the more detailed build ;). It'll get there! Along with domes and all that.

Well, most of the rough structure is done now :). I've moved the first drive wheel forward by one stud and I've added the front of the locomotive. I've tried to made it resemble an early 4mt, which has a different front end than the latter ones. The running gear is missing, that will be next.

[MOC] Power Functions Saddle Tank Shunter in Dark Blue

Wow, glad I could provide the inspiration ;). That's a very very small PF-powered shunter! Looks nice too, I kinda dig the light grey.

Here is an update for the 4mt, showing the overall shape :). The drive train is nearly a copy of that used in the class 08 shunter:
  23. Dutchiedoughnut

    PF powered steam tank engine

Well, I wanted to see if it is possible. For a tank engine it won't be possible to hide anything in the tender. If we have more options for a very small drivetrain it opens up so much more designs :).

    [MOC] Class 08 shunter

It's been a while since I posted in the train forum, and I'm designing a model in LDD that has been done a couple times. Still, I love the brick and I wanted to try out some driveline ideas. Here were my design thoughts: - It has to be a 7-wide or 8-wide model. I'll soon be building 7-wide trucks and trailers, and I can't have trains that are smaller than trucks ;). - It has to have power functions. Which is a problem in such a small package. - I wanted to try a worm gear to reduce the output speed of the engine, it seems a logical choice for a slow diesel shunter. So, here it is. I'm pretty satisfied with the overall look of the shunter and especially the size. I didn't want the side of the shunter to be too cluttered, so it's quite clean compared to other models I took inspiration from. Well, it's an 8-wide model because that worked best for the front of the shunter (in my opinion, anyway). There will be a sticker so the front and the rear will have yellow and black hazard stripes. I do like it as it is in LDD though. Here is the rear and the cab. And the drive train. As you can see, the shunter is pretty full, but it's certainly not stuffed yet. And the IR receiver is missing from the party at the moment. I've got some ideas to solve that but I have to work those out in LDD to see if they will work. The shunter will have a medium motor, which will drive a worm gear connected to a 24 teeth gear. It'll have a reduction of 1/24 so I'm thinking the shunter will be strong and slow. All wheels of the shunter are driven by gears so there should be plenty of traction. I have had problems with the drive rods binding on an earlier model so I decided to drive all the wheels and make sure they all turn. And a size comparison to 60052. Looks pretty good to me :). They have the same rough scale while the class 08 is certainly much more boxy and short.

    [MOC] Class 08 shunter

I've rebuilt the shunter brick by brick ;). It's gotten shorter by 5! studs, it'll be difficult to shave off more, and the model would suffer if it got even shorter. The drive train has changed - credits to Daedalus304 for the inspiration there. The worm wheel has gone and a 1:3 gear reduction was put in place. It'll be plenty powerful, and a little quicker than the worm wheel solution. All wheels are driven. It's pretty much stuffed full now. Without counting the round buffers, the model is just 20 studs long.
