Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Lind Whisperer replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Oops...could you attack The Miracle Worker then? -
And that's kind of one of the reasons why I was/am pushing for us to stick together down on the ground, instead of just fleeing and letting the higher-levels take care of the problem. This...this just brings a real smile to my face. Thanks, WBD.

Hmm...but one piece of good advice I got while I was trying to write my first quest was, "Don't tell (a pre-conceived narrative), set out a structure and react to how the players react." Don't try and force people to follow a strict story-line." I do hear what you're saying, though, about it being a "shared experience". One thing I've been kind of annoyed about is how the higher-level heroes are kind of acting like battle rounds don't exist for this fight. From my perspective, we're on the ground. We were left there because all of the rest of the party assumed that the battle would go traditionally. WBD threw us all a massive curveball by having the Founders walk out unexpectedly. It's our choice what we do - do we run? Or do we make a heroic last stand? But that's not how people are playing it. You have multiple high-level heroes saying "He leaps down from the wall, and then gives his advice about what to do next, and politely addressed the Founders like the battle hasn't even started.". But that's not how it works. By the timeline, the timeline we've always used for battles, all of these people are still crossing the field towards us. The battle has already started - or not - a full round before anyone arrives. But everyone's acting like they're on the scene at the start of the battle. And they're not. It was at this point that I realized that, since the Outer Wall rounds get run first, you could argue that they do arrive before our battle starts...but no. These events are happening simultaneously. By the time you've arrived to give advice, we've already had to take action. We've already acted, by the time you arrive. The battle has already started - or not - before you get there to tell us to retreat. I'm not asking you to not give us advice about how to play, certainly. Given the number of attack proposals I've given out, that would be ridiculous. Feel free to shout all the advice across the field you want, like how Lind is presumably shouting his requests for people on the Walls to take actions. But I would appreciate it if people would play things in order. This battle wasn't standard, it was unexpected. We play things differently in this battle - by the timeline* - because it's different, it's a different situation. *Normally, people ignore the battle timeline as is convenient. But it's gotten kind of ridiculous at this point, since several players are acting like it doesn't even exist. I get that your standard method would be to try and be diplomatic about things. But you're not on the scene. We are on the scene. And it's not a standard scenario, so standard methods may not work as well - and when they blatantly disagree with the timeline, they really don't work from an RP standpoint! (Apologies if I'm coming off as angry, I'm really not trying to. I'm just trying to take advantage of a cool, unexpected plot twist for the RP - and it kind of feels like some people are trying to bend it back into "normal," "expected," territory, rather than have fun letting it ride out and see where it could go.) Full agreement. Well, from my perspective, you've done a bang-up job of it. This is as satisfying a conclusion as anyone could ask for. Oh! That explains why the Mountain was alone when we fought him! I wondered a bit, but I didn't want to ask in case we suddenly had a horde of paladins show up as well.

Will do! Glad you're okay!

Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

OoC: Thanks. Are we able to use our Free Item abilities? Could this count as the start of a new battle? (I know "in-story" it's a new battle, but mechanically, I thought this was just another round. If it could count as a new battle, that would be really helpful.) @Palathadric I have you down as attacking The Walking Mountain, but if you want to attack someone else I can change things around. (Just don't attack The Golden Dragon - her Special would be devastating(an additional set of Free Hits!). I'm only listing Lucky Heroes as targeting her, for that reason.) If Petaldan wants to Smoke Bomb out of there...well, he can, but you have the highest Defense out of any of us. It would really help to have you around for the battle. We're hanging around/making a last stand. Our surviving is a longshot, but survive or KO, it's the last quest. It's more fun to make a heroic 'last stance' against one of the two main "enemies" of the quest, than to just play it safe in the background. Lind, Ezeran, and Torald are all confirmed as staying, and Heckz hasn't logged on since August. (Since it's buried two pages back, I'm going to repost the proposed Battle Order, so everyone can see what's supposed to be going on.)

OoC: Changed. Also, @Waterbrick Down - Is Throlar getting through to both groups of soldiers? Or just the ones on the Wall? And what's the timeline on that hanging? If we take down the Founders, will they quit? If not, how many rounds left before it starts? "I've run the numbers, and this will come pretty close to working. If the casters flee, there simply aren't enough people down here on the ground. Throlar is about to turn those sailors on to our side, fleeing up there would be a waste of time. And beyond that," the Black Knight raised his voice to a hearty yell, "WE'RE TIRED OF RUNNING! This is our city, our Fort - we're making a stand against the people who took it!" OoC: Worst case scenario: we all get KO'd. Single Phoenix Incense(Pretzel alone has six) and we're all back on our feet again. We're already sending away the people that can die permanently. And beyond that...I really am tired of running. Statistically, all of the lower-leveled heroes are going to go down at least once, unless they're not in the area, etc. If the rest of my crew really wants to flee, I'll lead them away, but as for myself, I'd rather go down, having gambled at a survival long-shot and failed, then just wait to die in a generic, miss-roll. My crew stands and fights for our city, and our people. You can argue that we'd survive more on the wall...but this battle fell to us. I don't want to run. I want to stand and fight. (Yes, I am prioritizing RP over maximizing safety/roll numbers. It's the finale. We're never going to get a moment like this again.) -

OoC: Knife-Tongue isn't targeting the Miracle Worker, he's targeting Lady Luck. If so, that's really good. I was mis-remembering Dragoon's SHIELD - I was hoping there was a group roll. (Wiping out everyone on the wall, like Benji did earlier.) But still, yes, minimizing Free Hits. Although, I'm afraid, under the plan I'm proposing, there will probably be at least four Free Hits. Not trying to be unfair, but the people on the wall can tank 15 damage each a lot better than we down here can tank even 30. (Plus, most of you have high Defense, something nearly all of us down here lack.) I'll put Torc further down in the revised line so she doesn't take damage. Good suggestion, I'll change his action. "No, we're not," said the Black Knight in an intimidating voice. Hopefully it would work better on the timid mage than on the retreating Marauder. "I have everything under plan. There is some risk, but we have reinforcements coming, and we should be able to get through this." "WE DON'T NEED A SMOKE BOMB! CASTERS, STAY WHERE YOU ARE, I HAVE THINGS ORGANIZED!" "A tiger bomb is a good impulse, but it won't work on her - she gets that effect from her gear." WBD told the other party this. One or two heroes may go down, but keep in mind - once your party is down, we're going to have to bring as many of the Outer Wall party members down as is possible/practical. Shooting from up there, with the 1/3 modifier, even if the hero is Lucky, is a waste of actions. We need people on the ground to keep negating up Free Hits/reviving KO'd characters while they change positions. -

OoC: I'm just going to write a whole Battle Order... Blue posts are in the correct order, the rest can be swapped around. Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Lind Whisperer replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: I'm going to focus on if we can possibly muster up enough fire power, not on matching levels/organizing attacks. If I see anything that would be helpful in targeting I'll list it below, but if anyone has a better idea, feel free to speak up. Lady Luck is the only enemy that isn't Immune to Slowed. Ezeran deals Slowed, so he should probably target her. (Not sure how much this will help out, but worth noting.) We should prioritize Lucky Heroes on The Golden Dragon, as her Special would be disastrous. Elphaba can deal Confused, no one but Lady Luck is Immune to it. May want to have her go first, to try and minimize Free Hits. Walking Mountain: Lind Whisperer, Bifrost Blades Walking Mountain: Lind Whisperer, Bifrost Blades Walking Mountain: Petaldan, Slimy Sword Walking Mountain: Torangu's Trident Walking Mountain: Elphaba, Roderick's Staff Walking Mountain: Euflear, Double Barreled Hand Cannon Walking Mountain: Chesterine, Zirconia Lady Luck: Ezeran, Ooze Wand Lady Luck: Ezeran, Ooze Wand Lady Luck: Knife-Tongue, Cendstyr Lady Luck: Knife-Tongue, Cendstyr Lady Luck: Euflear, Double Barreled Hand Cannon Lady Luck: Matthias, Ethereal XX Handcannon Replica Lady Luck: Benji, Hollow Meduiak Lady Luck: ___ or Free Hit Lady Luck: ___ or Free Hit The Miracle Worker: Waldorf, Wandrake The Miracle Worker: Kiray, Mythril Composite Bow The Miracle Worker: Kiray, Mythril Composite Bow The Miracle Worker: Chesterine, Zirconia The Miracle Worker: ___ or Free Hit The Miracle Worker: ___ or Free Hit The Miracle Worker: ___ or Free Hit The Miracle Worker: ___ or Free Hit The Golden Dragon: Heckz, Weatherfax Broom The Golden Dragon: Heckz, Weatherfax Broom The Golden Dragon: Germ, Brilliant Dagger The Golden Dragon: Dyric, Mythril Crossbow The Golden Dragon: Dyric, Mythril Crossbow The Golden Dragon: Matthias, Ethereal XX Handcannon Replica Luxidios: Benji, Hollow Meduiak ...Well, that would get us down to only six free hits. Hmm...If Benji - or Althior focused on the wall, and could take everyone out, a second time...and they're both Lucky... -

"Indeed. Wolfpack allegiance...is rather small. There are a few people here rather fond of the idea - but there are a significant number of us rather against it." "Thanks, but I think we'll need your skills elsewhere..." He nodded at Lady Luck The Golden Dragon. OoC: Germ is Lucky, and we need to prioritize Lucky Heroes on Lady Luck The Golden Dragon. I'm trying to put together a basic list of attacks - not quite done yet. -

The Black Knight shook his head. "The bombs are a no-go - I miscalculated how strong our opponents were... These bombs look a lot smaller than I remembered - and the ether you would expend wouldn't be worth it. If we make a stand, it will have to be with traditional tactics...we may have a chance of weathering it, if we get outside support...though it would be safer to retreat until we have back-up. Give me a minute to run the odds." -
Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Lind Whisperer replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Hmm...thanks for the info. It's fair, but I don't think we can do that this round. We need every attack we have, and that method wouldn't count against all of their Quickened attacks. Plus, Ezeran only has 14 ether currently, and even if someone gave him a Tonic/Grand Tonic, he's capped out at 29. Not enough damage to be worth it. "You're not here to rule? What exactly is this, then, if not ruling? You came here, you smashed up our leadership, you're forcing your rules upon the city - no, this is ruling. And it's going to stop." The Black Knight shook his head. The Golden Dragon was apparently not capable of changing her mind on their sincerity to save the city. He saw the Hobgoblin trying to sneak away. Lind jabbed him in the back with the Bifrost Blades. "No one's leaving here, Marauder, unless I say so. You signed up for this, well, you're staying." He looked toward the Alter Girl. Even if we send her against the Miracle Worker, one hit and we risk loosing her. I don't want to put her in harm's way, but she did choose to come on this mission... He looked around. Wait a minute - where the heck is Bellanotte! He looked up at the Wall. Of course she's up there... If we can't be Hastened, we're going to have to Smoke Bomb our way out of here...who has a Smoke Bomb... His eyes fell on Petaldan. Whose Guardian Angel was fluttering around above him. "...Oh." OoC: ...I just realized Petaldan rolled a SHIELD ...but wait, he spent the last turn moving to the Harbor? So, if moving between locations takes a full round, should he still have that? If he does, it's great, and I'm not trying to make it harder for us here, but I don't think he should still have it. But if he does...then we're actually in good shape. *checks the Wiki+the earlier rounds* ...No, I don't think he should have it. He had it two rounds ago, and he hasn't rolled a SHIELD since. The Guardian Angel fluttered away into the sky unless I'm missing something. Lind stepped closer to Heckz and Torald the only two with Smoke Bombs and waved them in. "Unless you feel like making a really heroic stand while we briefly wait for support, we may need to throw down a Smoke Bomb. These Founders don't seem interested in a truce, and I'm not sure we can take them without a Minstrel...seems the Outer Walls party decided they would need two more than anyone down here might need one." -
Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Lind Whisperer replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: The Harbor party is going to get crushed as it is, unless we can negotiate a truce for a round. If I remember things correctly, the Smoke Bomb won't speed things up - it only allows the party to flee to the Harbor without worrying about having an equal number of heroes v. enemies. It will still take you a full round to the Harbor. If we can't negotiate a brief truce, you're suggesting that we drop our numbers from 9 to 6. 9...to SIX. 18 Free Hits? That...would be even more disastrous than it would be with 12. At least with Knife-Tongue there, he, I, and the other higher-level heroes could maybe hope to spread out some of the hits, if we were extra lucky and were really careful about targeting. If we have only SIX, we're going to get wiped. REALLY LATE EDIT, INSERTED AFTER SECOND POST: Going over the battle again, we're in even worse shape than I thought - and I was counting Bellanotte(Who I thought was still down here, but apparently isn't) as having three turns when I should have counted for one. (Hasten+2 attacks.) Having Knife-Tongue leave the battle would mean that from out of a total of 12 attacks(meaning 18 Free Hits!), we would lose 4. Meaning we'd get hit by 22 Free Hits. 22 Free Hits. 22 Free Hits, from 30 to 100. Against six lowish-leveled players...that would not turn out well. Admittedly, it says that we have a Guardian Angel, but it's said that for two rounds, without a SHIELD having been rolled in either. We don't have an angel, as per Wiki rules. (Even if it's something new, where an Angel sticks around unless Damage has been rolled, a Damage was rolled - and no damage was taken. It could be that the Hero was Immune to something, but even so...) -
Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Lind Whisperer replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Euflear is still on the boat. Lind frowned. "I don't remember our hearing anything about any "accidents". It seems to me their revival was quite intentional... Accidentally revived at the exact same time Rosier needed a distraction in Eubric, while she was finishing her plans of destroying the Fae? Accidentally taking over Heroica Hall - the one place with a direct tunnel towards the Temple portal? Accidentally putting out a watchlist on the Heroes, the one people that might seriously get in Rosier's way? That's a lot of "accidents"." He began to say more, then squinted at the Founders. He stiffened...and then tried to make a diplomatic smile - though, it came out more as intimidating, given his status as a Black Knight. "You know, that's a good idea. EUFLEAR!" he shouted at the boat. "COME HERE A MINUTE - GOT SOME OLD - WELL, NEW - FRIENDS WHO WANT TO MEET YOU." He nodded at the Founders. "Let's have a brief truce, shall we? Truce for one round. I think you'd be very interested to meet our friend - and it will barely take a minute!" OoC: We NEED to drag things out for a single, no-combat round. I didn't realize the implications of everyone being Quickened. All of our enemies are Quickened, to a total of 30. 30 attacks we'd have to counter. We can't possibly do that - even if everyone was Hastened, we'd be 12 short. 12 Free Hits from enemies ranging from 30 to 100. Even if we somehow survived the entire round with no bad rolls, we would take tremendous damage just from Free Hits alone. We need to truce this out for a single round, until everyone else can get down here. -

The Black Knight patted the Battle Mage on the back, gently. "Don't worry, kid. Crescenteers stick together. We're going to win this." He tilted his head. He looked around him. He grinned. "...And I think I just figured out how we're going to start..." He nodded at Ezeran. "You have a Sapphire, don't you? Good." The knight waved his hand around the field. "Take a look at all those sailors...they're carrying dozens and dozens of Fire Bombs. And they're all just lying there on the ground, since no one looted them. Can you pick them up with a blast of Wind from that Sapphire, and, shall we say, give our founding friends here a warm welcome? If you can't use Wind to ignite them, you can probably just hit them with a Fire spell from your Ruby - you're already Hastened, so that shouldn't be a problem." OoC: By my count, there's anywhere from 50 to 59 firebombs. That's... *checks Wiki* Oh. Not as much damage as I was hoping...I was hoping they'd be more powerful, instead of only each doing 5 damage. @Waterbrick Down Could each Fire bomb do x2 damage (10), since the Founders are made of Fairy dust, which, as the quest emphasized(to one of the other groups) is extra incendiary? As it is, they'll do 250 to 295 damage to each Founder guaranteed*, without risk of injury/tripping a special. If they could do x2 damage, that would be 500 to 590 per Founder - a pretty good start to the battle! EDIT: Trying to troubleshoot for anything that might go wrong. The Mountain has an effect where anything thrown at him has a 1/2 chance of being thrown back. Ezeran is Immune to Fire, but not the rest of us, so don't target him, let him get caught in the splash damage. Also, all of those ??? specials have me concerned...We're going to be struggling with them throughout the battle, but having even only 250 damage reflected back at us could be very bad... WBD: Can Ezeran use Wind to trigger the bombs as he throws them, in a single turn? If he can, then Ezeran could throw one bomb as a test, then all 49-58 of them afterwards if nothing goes wrong. (Still risky, but a lot safer!) Lind shook his head, as he watched the monk try and plead with the false Dragoon. "These...people, are illusions - fairy dust in the shape of humans. I don't think you're going to ever get too far with them." OoC: This timeline is...kind of skewed. According to the rules, everyone in the Harbor will make their attacks, then Boomingham, etc. will jump down, then everyone has this conversation. Unless Boomingham, etc. are shouting across the battlefield, or we all decide to sit this round out+revitalize on potions, etc. *Assuming no one's Immune to Fire. I think we're safe on this front - everyone's immunities, etc., seem based on their equipment, and very few pieces look like they might have Fire Immunity. Tome of the Miracle Worker, possibly, but I doubt it. And Luxidios isn't affected by Fire, anyway. -

Lind whispered to the heroes next to him, "Does anyone have a spare Nostrum? I could really use being Lucky in this next battle...Can definitely work out a good deal, if anyone has a spare." "I'd be more interested in what points you think you're proving - and why you're massacring innocent civilians. Seems to me, you're the ones bringing this city plenty of grief." OoC: Clarification - if a hero is Hastened, can they spend their first action changing areas, and then their second action attacking an enemy in the new zone? -
I think, if you use a Nostrum(for example), they then have a 1/2 chance at becoming Lucky. As to your second question, it specifies any item, so I should think it would be the same thing(at least how it's currently written, WBD may want to change this). A 1/2 chance to counter-attack the player. Third question - I assume so. I don't really see them using Nostrums on the enemy, or attacking themselves.

OoC: It is, but aren't you immune to Hastened? Do you mean, "If Germ can, he targets C, if C is dead, he targets D"? -

OoC: A second person on Mob C would be useful. We still need one more person on White Hatchlings D, though. We're only at 2/3.
