[LDD] [MOC] 74 gun Ship of the Line WIP
Kolonialbeamter replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thank you. Hmm, I was afraid someone would 'go bunnies'... Persephone definitely is a reference, but in my case rather for details, the hull techniques differ quite a lot. Great ship, I can't emphasize this enough! I'm trying to go for a french ship design, thanks for noticing. But just a little, some elements that I find easy to apply. However, since I'm not (yet) working with any construction plans, there are elements I use from all kinds of designs, making the ship rather generic, but I'm trying to go that way. Next step is to maybe get rid of the upper gundeck's gun ports. Thank you for the link you've provided. More material is always appreciated. I see your points, Looking at this picture here: I think I might have gone a bit mad with curving astern However, it's also the tumblehome... vertical curving should be pronounced a bit more... and the bow could be a bit pointier... I think a part of the impression of the stern being too small is due to the scale. If this is to be considered minifig illusion scale, then it's roughly 2/3 minifig scale, in length and width. But not in height, minifigs can be posed on the gundecks. So this adds up to some sort of distortion. One can always imagine the stern to be a bit wider... But she's definitely curved inwards too much... Hmm, not really sure I'm brave enough to change all that, as she was supposed to be just a 'quick build'. The better ship is always the next one... Again, thank you for your input, it's very much appreciated! Best Regards- 19 replies

Quite nice so far. It seems, Sebeus unintentionally started some kind of naval arms race... For the stern I'm with Captain Braunsfeld, techniques are more or less standard, just check around for inspiration, you'll get a feeling for it. For the rest, is there a reason for having so little fire power? Usually four studs in between cannons are enough. More guns are always better! And I also suggest to move the mainmast a little bit backwards, say 2-4 studs, depending on your stern design. Looking forward for more! Regards

[LDD] [MOC] 74 gun Ship of the Line WIP
Kolonialbeamter replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks. Unfortunately, I have no idea what you mean by bow spear The mast, maybe (bowsprit)? Anyway, here's more to (hopefully) be liked. I completed the hull, except for some small bits, changed a few things about the overall design, and so on. Unfortunately, now that the structure based on hinge plates proved to be working well from a technical point, it's kind of hard to motivate myself to finish her up completely anytime soon. I still have no idea about a concept of modularity, she is surely not swooshable, lacks any interior planking and at least some level of detail. But those side galleries begin to grow on me... Oh, and before you ask, the figure head is definitely up for debate! Thanks for watching, C&C most welcome.- 19 replies

This is truly spectacular! Such level of detail, some pictures in your flickr stream really blew me off my feet. I'm especially fond of your wall design with all those various decorations, holes, and whatnot. And when you say there's more to come! Great work, looking forward for more. Best regards

I agree with Admiral Croissant. And maybe she won't be the most massive ship around, but she still looks sharp as a blade and very very fast. A born hunter. Good luck with the final stage! Regards

Very fine MOC, especially for a first one! If this were to be an official set, I'd buy it immediately. Great work, keep it up! Regards

60 gun royal frigate "Lemuria" and some other ideas
Kolonialbeamter replied to Dunkleosteus's topic in Pirate MOCs
Again you've managed to amaze me! I really like your fleet, stunning ships, each with their own unique characteristics. Versatile and very imaginative. Just WOW! My prefered one is Lemuria, mostly for the tumblehome and the amazing stern. Great work with those flexible parts! Thanks for presenting this, hope you'll continue to come up with such great designs. Best regards -
But Victory is an evil Redcoats' ship... I'll give it another thought, after all, who am I to argue with a ship expert Thanks for your explaination, I'm sure she'll be a fine ship once finished. Until then, more WIP pictures please! And I'd say to go with dark brown, like this you'd show a non painted part of the hull, and also because it just looks good on Pinnacle. Looking forward to seeing more of this, Regards

Although I follow the guilds closely, especially the GNAR these days, I don't really dare to post here among all you fantastic builders. But this ship is so WOW, I just had to wow it out loud here! Stunning everything. Nuff said, I humbly retreat back to the Pirates' forum. Regards

Wow, what a restart! As usually, lots of details, a clean build, colors are very nice. I'm not so fond of the hull so far, though. I think it lacks some vertical curving, and the aft section is a bit wide. With Pinnacle you angled the stern, and she is riding lower in the water, giving her a sleeker, more dynamic apperance. But maybe that's only due to the pictures/perspective. I suggest to simply lower her, and only maybe think about an angled aft section similar to Pinnacle's. I'm really looking forward to this! Regards

This gun carriage you've come up with is very clever! Imma borrow that. As for the 'awkwardness' of the masts, I suggest the offset mentioned by Kurigan, plus try to reduce their hight, or make the bowsprit a bit longer. But maybe that would interfere with your plans for the yard attachments...

[LDD] [MOC] 74 gun Ship of the Line WIP
Kolonialbeamter replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks a lot. Concerning the books, I've been about to buy one several times, but in the end couldn't convince myself... I think when starting something based on actual plans, this can be a valuable source of information. I'll do my best to convince myself Just realized I forgot one picture, here are the notorious 'gappy' side galleries... I think I'll stick with the old version...- 19 replies

[LDD] [MOC] 74 gun Ship of the Line WIP
Kolonialbeamter replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks guys for the support. Sorry, it's been a while, just didn't find any time at the weekend. Therefore progress is a little slow, didn't get as far as I had hoped... Thanks, although these ships are rarely completely new, some parts are always 'borrowed' from previous builds. Took your advice and widened the hull by four studs, proved to be better looking, in my opinion at least. That's how I did it, widened the middle and reattached bow and stern. Sounds easier than it was, cause changing hinges en masse in LDD is a pain! I also had to change the angle of the the tumblehome, and doing so on a properly fitting structure is... yet more pain... Anyway, thank you for your kind comment, I'm sure you'll do fine building your own ship of the line, after all, you've mastered the Dutchman! Thank you. I think she'll most likely stay a digital model. If building something, it'll be a first rate like Impérial. With this ship here I'm 'simply' trying to come up with some better techniques to update my three decker. Thank you. Hmm, I've long thought about using real plans, but I started this one without. I'm just using some pictures to get the general proporsions right. Using plans is so much work... But eventually I will go there... Next ship, maybe Oh, almost forgot pictures! As I mentioned I widened the hull by four studs, reshaped bow and stern accordingly, and adjusted the tumblehome. Additionally I changed the side galleries (I'm not sure about them, they are a bit 'gappy') and started giving her a 'face'. Next step is to finish the bow, then comes the mirroring phase... wish there was a tool for that. Thanks for watching, let me know what you think.- 19 replies

Yellow handrails cannot be ignored! She is going to be a worthy Bluecoat flagship. The use of that egyptian stern piece is awesome! And do I spot an (empty) jar of dirt next to the wheel?! Thanks for sharing your progress, always a pleasure to follow your work. Keep it up! Btw, have you received any name suggestions from your family already?

Great job so far, I love the shape and colors, the hatch and windlass are genious, the planking in fifty shades of grey is stunning. One question here: Your deck is one level, cause it's a small sloop. Is it possible to bend the structure a little to adapt this technique for larger ships to create a deck of slightly differents hights but without steps? Not sure I express myself correctly here... I think you could use a touch of red on the inside of the hull, maybe just some parts like the attachment for the rigging or whatever that is called. The resemblance with the original might become even more striking. Just an idea. Oh, and I second Sebeus' name suggestion Good luck on finishing her! Regards

Wow, she looked stunning as a digital model, but in real bricks now... so big and even more impressive! Great work, looking forward to see more detailed pics soon Regards

Lovely little ship, and one of the rare ones with a meaningful, humane purpose, exploration. I really like the way you included the horse as a figure head. The inclusion into a painting seems to become a new standard... Good job, keep it up!

Two days! THAT is remarkable! And your 'in the meantime' ships are great to look at, too! I humbly bow to your MOCing talent. (Digitally) Brick on! Best regards

Toys are way to important to leave them to kids! *takes cover* Kidding, of course. At the end of the day Lego is a toy designed for children, to be bought by parents. Core business concept. And with this in mind I agree with kabel, I'd rather see two small ships than three quarters of a UCS model. And to be honest, as adults, what to you need to get the sets for? For collecting purposes? Okay, a UCS box on the top shelf is much nicer looking then that smaller model. But for MOCing? TLC is constantly creating new parts, no matter the size of the model. The rest is our creativity, as we all can see on this forum. As for my wish for larger prefab parts, it doesn't mean the ships have to be bigger, larger, more detailed, more expensive, just wider. All the rest is a matter of design and maybe simplyfication. You can always find an 'excuse' to produce new molds. 4 juniors had a pirate ship hull just for two sets (I'm not suggesting to bring back those, though!). So why not have a wider version of the current ones as a standard for future pirate waves? Then the normal ones could become a future small ships' base. Just a thought, since a lot of things in the Lego universe seem to 'grow' over time. But after all, it's a business decision, maybe there's just no need for TLC to go that way. I'd still be happy to see more MOCing material in whatever sized models. And until then I can still MOC my own hulls.

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hmm, is it? I don't know, but I still hope for some sort of grand unifying approach to the matter... Anyway, it's been two weeks since the last teaser bit, any chance for another one or a status update along the long long way? Best of success to the team! Regards- 318 replies

Like taken straight from a Disney movie I can very much relate, although mine mostly flew the blue flag... Thanks for sharing! @kabel: main target audience... it's never been about realism, but about fantasy and play. Therefore exaggeration matters. I doubt we'll see more realistic ships (what ten year old boy cares for a smooth broadside or a proper tumble home), unless released with a licenced theme. As far as I remember the POTC video game featured both the Interceptor and the Dauntless. Shame, none of them was ever released... or at least some kind of instructions for us AFOLs... But we can always vote for Sebeus' 'Flying Dutchman' at Lego Ideas (former Cuusoo).

Wow! She truely looks like hell itself spat her out, something of a sea-equivalent to those giant battle elephants from 'Lord of the Rings'. And behind all these ornaments she is a very well built galleon, I like her a lot. I'm very fond of your broadside techniques, especially on Troglodyte. And from a 'digital' perspective, I really appreciate your chain work at the prow. You seem like a really skilled builder, and a fast one; I see a lot of bricks that only very recently have been updated into LDD. Also the different stylistic interpretations are quite nice. Just one thing, have you come up with a color scheme yet, that would work in real bricks? Oh, and of course, do you have further ships planned? Keep it up! Regards
-
I agree, it seems to be a key element... But as a kid I liked them... for exactly these reasons The effect of this 'design propaganda' was so immense, that I considered differently looking ships/models to be false Yeah, small ships are fun. But on the contrary I'd much rather like to see a new wider prefab hull. Maybe an increase of +4 studs... After all, the City themes got larger vehicles 'ages' ago, show some love for pirates, please! Shipbuilding possibilities would skyrocket... Maybe exaggerating a bit here...

Ambassador Project - Sub-Theme Suggestions - POLL RESULTS
Kolonialbeamter replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Whereas I personally prefer the Trading Company idea (more of an 'open' setting, room for expansion, more waves), I voted for the Lost City, because I see more drive in it compared to the other suggestions. Powered by this half map idea, this race towards treasure, I think the higher 'play pace' is more suited for the main target audience, and as a one wave theme this might be important in order to convince TLC.
