Wow, these are looking fantastic! The removable rack is a great solution to get the most functionality out of them. I'm excited for them to "hit the shelves!"

The Santa fe Super Chief inspired by Robert Carney
CrispyBassist replied to ust60's topic in LEGO Train Tech
These look awesome so far, I'm looking forward to seeing more progress! The one suggestion I'd make is to somehow work in a gap between the trucks and the body of the locomotives and cars, similar to the gap between the fuel tanks and the locomotive bodies. -
Those do look pretty good. I'd imagine Microsoft Excel would work pretty well for creating custom straight/square sections. Simply play with the fill color of the cells, and by changing the cell width/height one could easily make different styles of painted lines and know they're straight and parallel to each other.

Looking good! From your first post I started thinking you had a vendetta against cyclists - letting their lane drop off at the bridge so they couldn't cross!

This is the only other one I have of the whole train together: I've got more pics of the individual cars on my Flickr though: NYNH&H EP-3, RPO-baggage, baggage car, heavyweight coach And there's Tony setting the bar another level higher ;-)

I think there will be plenty of large engines there, judging from the turnout the past few years! I'll have my RDC there, which I know is not necessarily a big engine but has all the steps, couplers, etc. at each end mounted to the chassis rather than the trucks (i.e. low vertical clearance at the ends, which swing out through curves). I'd happily help test it out.

This is the best way of building those transitions that I've seen: SNOT by consular_ship on Flickr. (It's not my photo, so I linked to it so y'all can give consular_ship props on his Flickr.) Depending on the color you plan to build the loco in the 2x2 octagonal cone (6039) may work too.
-
I've taken to doing that too, but some cars (i.e. my RDC) still catch.
-
Moving the switch mechanism to the other side would be fine by me. That should reduce the issues I have with long cars catching their center on the switch mechanisms.

My longest trains my NYNH&H passenger train. Though it's only a motor and three cars, it's 13.3 ft long (~4 m) the shortest cars are 54 studs long each. I'm also working on a fourth car for it, of the same design as the dark green one in the video greenmtvince posted a few replies up. This will put it at 16.6 ft (~5 m) long

I'd be interested in the roundtable, bridges, and yards session as well as the IRM visit (depending on timing of that). As Tony mentioned, the set modifications isn't a bad topic, I just tend to stick with MOCs over sets.

Need Help - Victorian Architecture Train Station
CrispyBassist replied to greenmtvince's topic in LEGO Town
What about wedge plates? Align the wedge sides at the corners... Some of those new 2x2 wedges might work around the spire. -
I agree with the comments that it shouldn't be just a bunch of pictures of MOCs. I do think there's merit to having, say, a MOC per issue and perhaps giving some more background on the prototype (if any) and, like coaster mentioned, detailing some of the trickier aspects and techniques involved in the build. I'd be happy to contribute to a magazine as well. Ive got a few ideas for things i could write, and working in the rail industry I'm sure there's plenty of interesting things that could crossover into bricks.

St. Louis Metro Link - Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) - MOC
CrispyBassist replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
We're measuring vehicle loads and bending moments to investigate ways to better design concrete ties for rail transit. We'll be doing similar installations in NYC and Chicago too. So if you ride out to Fairview Heights from the west you'll become data for us!- 13 replies

St. Louis Metro Link - Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) - MOC
CrispyBassist replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
It's interesting that this topic came back up this week, as myself and a few other U of I researchers are installing instrumentation on MetroLink track for a research project!- 13 replies

Just checked, looks like it does use the older dark red. I checked it and a known "new" dark red brick and the light came through significantly more with the GG curtain slope.

Is there space to use a PF extension wire from the IR receiver to both motors? Looks like there might be enough space behind the front motor or in the cab for the connections.

Hello all, I'm starting a build of a New Haven caboose and need some help with it. In order to get the look the way I want it, I need to have a 7x7 roof on the 6x7 (LxW) cupola all atop an 8-wide caboose. The problem is I can't get two 11477 pieces to connect to anything else if I do it this way (see first picture). I've currently got the roof built using small strips of packing tape to hold the two in place and I've come to terms with that being a permanent solution, but I want to make sure I exhaust all pure possibilities before giving up. To help see the cupola design better, I've color-coded the pieces and grabbed a couple more images from LDD: Let me know if you have any ideas!

Help! 7x7 roof on a 6x7 cupola on a 8-wide caboose

Thanks again for the help with the roof. Here's an update on the progress of the caboose: -
Help! 7x7 roof on a 6x7 cupola on a 8-wide caboose
CrispyBassist replied to CrispyBassist's topic in LEGO Train Tech
WOW! I honestly wasn't expecting to find something that works, let alone that quickly! Looks like I'll be ordering a couple of those pieces from overseas... Thanks for taking a stab at it! I'm trying to build it as prototypical as possible though, so I want the overhang on the front and back of the roof. -
SBrick for PF trains- a first impression review
CrispyBassist replied to zephyr1934's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Maybe it's just been a while since I played with it, but there wasn't the option last time I did. As for a stop button, my phone has a back key so when I need to stop the train I back out of the control interface and then reopen it. This stops the train every time, and resets the controls too. Not sure if that would work for you as well. -
SBrick for PF trains- a first impression review
CrispyBassist replied to zephyr1934's topic in LEGO Train Tech
So youre saying Sbrick has added the ability to assign multiple sliders/buttons to the same channel?? That's a huge improvement that I'm real glad to hear about! Thanks for posting this! -
The main part of the sidewalk in Creator modulars is Dark Stone Grey (Lego terminology) aka Dark Bluish Grey (Bricklink terminology) and the curb is Medium Stone Grey (Lego) aka Light Bluish Grey (Bricklink).

Lego Pneumatic train build... [Dump blog thing]
CrispyBassist replied to Electricsteam's topic in LEGO Train Tech
My only suggestion would be a 6x6 or 4x4 dish on the front of the boiler to add some realism and break up the flat front a bit. You might be able to work in a bracket in place of one of the presumably 2x2 red plates (referring to the picture you posted in your Blue Render thread (I figured this was more fitting here though)), or use longer 2xN plates to remove some of the SNOT bricks and brackets from the front 2 studs of the boiler. Just some thoughts. Otherwise this is looking real good! -
