2014 City Sets - Rumours and Discussion

LOL. It's often stated that British policemen were called Bobby after the founder of the British police force, Robert 'Bobby' Peel. However the name 'Bobby' is much older. Town Beadles in the early 1800's carried a cane and were charged with keeping order in the town square. They would beat street urchins with the cane to drive them off the square. The Urchins would call the Beadles 'Bobby Beadle'. The word 'Bobby' is an old English word for hitting or beating. So in fact the name Bobby when referring to British policemen is referencing the stick they carry whether you call it a nightstick, a truncheon or a baton. This is also why the a Policeman's patrol is referred to as 'on the beat'. Sorry to go off topic. Just wanted to clear that up.

    New Licensed Theme Rumor Mill

If CMF's move into Licensed territory I'm out. For one thing there'd be a price rise. For another I don't like the idea of Lego relying on Licensed themes instead of continuing with in-house ones. Anything that pushes the cost of Lego higher is bad. Anything that encourages scalpers and hoarders who speculate on a child's toy is bad. Overall it's just an awful proposition.

Disney Princess 2014 Rumors & Discussion

Sounds like a positively awful theme to me. Lego start moving forward with Friends by giving the girls plucky nature and proactive outlook and then Lego take a huge step backwards with the misogynistic, white supremecist world of Disney Princesses. Well done Lego. Way to go. Disgust aside, if there's lots of flame yellowish orange parts I'll probably Bricklink them. Can't get enough of oranges right now.

    Legends of Chima 2014

Seems to me the only truly evil character is Crooler. All the others are either truly good or just not very bright and easily manipulated. Crooler is controlling, manipulative, scheming and dangerous. The tribes are all guilty of rash thoughts and actions but none of them are really evil or bad. Hot headed and quick to jump to conclusions for sure but even the Ravens aren't evil. The Crocs follow Cragger because he's their leader but aren't evil. It's just Crooler with her mind altering flower and her plotting that is the bad guy. Take her out of the picture and peace would fall on Chima once more. Regarding the next chapter with the arachnid and bat characters, I imagine some sort of quest to find Crominus and Crunket takes the story into caves and underground passages where the arachnids are encountered. A new danger because Crooler and her flower are going to get boring after a while. It'll also add more terrain for Speedor races and chases.

    Your dream Lego theme

Jhonen Vasquez the creator would never have green lighted it. He hated the action figure line produced by Palisades toys and those were fairly accurate. Given that Lego is a building block toy the characters would look totally off and Jhonen would positively detest that. Having said that, I would squee with delight if I had Zim Lego. Sets like Zim's house and the Megadoomer "*gasp* It's got chicken legs!" would be awesome. The Voot cruiser both normal and pig disguise would be too cool. Weirdly, I think Megabloks could do Zim more justice as they are more willing to do new moulds for minifigs and source specific parts. So the odd angles and curves you have in the Zim world would translate better into brick form with MB.

    2013 Galaxy Squad

Ok, so after looking at all my old classic space and Futuron figures lined up on a crater baseplate I looked at my GS squad of four Billy Starbeams and Two red robots and decided to swell the ranks. Currently I have: 5 Billy Starbeam 2 red robot 5 Jack Fireblade 2 Chuck Stonebreaker 1 Solomon Blaze 1 Max Solarflare 1 Blue robot I'll equalise the numbers of the green and blue teams at some point and get the orange robot but Chuck will possibly end up without his robot as the head really unsettles me for some reason. Perhaps I'll use a different head and paint it. Sacrilege I know but I really, really don't like the head they gave the green robot. I don't have any of the vehicles and no green bugs or their vehicles but have got one red Buggoid with plans to add a few more. I've also bought the GS sticker sheets and will at some point build these guys a big splitting ship of some description. I'll also get the head of Ashlee Starstrider so I have one of every squad member complete. I've gone a bit crazy on space figures this month. I bought a load of CMF space farers and tons of parts for a big spaceship build. I need to get some bright green and dark azure parts but that'll have to wait for now. I'm out of spare cash and still haven't come up with a decent design for the GS ship. While I'm working on the ship for my Blacktron gang I'll try things out with that which I can use for the GS ship, like the splitting/docking mechanism and landing gear that retracts. It's all new territory for me. I've always loved Space Lego but some reason always concentrated on town/city and historical themes. It's goint to take me a good while to build these ships so I shall bow out of this discussion and not return unless by a miracle a third wave is announced. Long live Billy Starbeam and may Solomon Blaze be forever plagued with flies in his soup.

2014 City Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Non-fantasy divers. Oceanographers. The Atlantis theme was cool and all but we haven't had any Ocean exploration sets for years. It could even be Octan oil pipeline repair. Submariner workmen. There just needs to be a boat, a sub, an ROV, some divers and crew and some harpoon guns to fight off the sharks that have recently infested the waters around Lego City. I loved the old divers theme but with the parts available now the subs could really be something awesome. Perhaps Lego could even do a new part of a wetsuit hood with the mask attached instead of using a separate mask with a clunky looking helmet? There could be a small oil rig platform similar in size to 4210 Coast Guard Platform Octan get their oil from somewhere so why not offshore? And if there was an accident then all those Fire boats Lego keep churning out are going to have something to attend. If Lego are going to avoid boring people to death then Divers revived could be a decent place to start.

    MOC-WIP Pacific Rim Jaeger Cockpit

Very rough calculation here but if a Jaeger is 250 feet tall. And a minifig is about one and a half inches tall. And if you say that the minifig represents a person roughly six feet tall, then a Lego Jaeger would be roughly five feet two inches tall. My maths is very wonky, but I'd say that sounds about right and in scale with some of the large skyscrapers I've seen at Lego convention displays. I think though that probably downscaling to about three feet tall would still give the impression of massive scale while not being overwhelmingly huge.
  11. Bought a couple of Evil mechs from Ebay. Good price too. I'll be replacing the heads with 'human' ones to give my Blacktron gang two advanced fighters. I very nearly got the scientist and welder too but as I'm collecting parts for a large spaceship and a bunch of older space minifigs, I decided to leave them for now. My step-neice was very excited to hear that WHSmiths had put out series 11 though. Hopefully she can find the Yeti she craves and doesn't end up with the female robot her mother wants her to have.
  12. There should be a ban on sellers listing items with teeth marks. Scratches are unavoidable with so many sharp edges to bricks but who wants to buy chewed up parts? I saw one listing the other day that said "has been heavily chewed". Seriously? People expect to sell crud like that? So yes, clearer data on how bad a part condition is would be good. 'Used', 'Heavily used', 'Used to death' and 'Beyond Useless' would be what I'd be looking for.

Disney Princess 2014 Rumors & Discussion

Mighty Metal Friends! Mia-mauler, Maya-masher, Stephanie-stomper, Kate-krusher, Andrea-annihilator and Emma-eviscerator. They were mocked. They were belittled. Now the girls are mad as heck and out to settle the score....
  14. I'd rather they just made more regular Town/City style buildings in the actual City theme. I find the modulars overly detailed and messy looking. I like the simpler lines and scant details of City buildings. I think in minifig scale, simpler is better.
  15. It would be cool if the images of items for sale were all of a standard size and resolution. Either all photographs or all computer generated. The mixture now makes it very messy looking and where one image serves for all the different colours a part comes in it can be hard to 'see' what you're looking at. Especially when you're trying to amass an amount of stuff for a project. Obviously it would take some time to generate images all in one standard but it would make things easier on the eye and brain. I look at those LDD generated images of parts and half the time I don't know what I'm looking at. I also hope that the seller/buyer feedback page gets looked at. a higher character limit would be nice. Sometimes you want to be a little more detailed than is currently allowed. perhaps a system more akin to the Ebay form with more check boxes for things like satisfactory communication, well packed, timely shipping etc. Letting other buyers really know what the shopping experience at a store is like. It's all a bit vague as it is right now. I'm not sure I'd be at all interested in the MOC part of BL. As long as it just sits side by side with the stores and doesn't impinge on them I'm fine with it being there. I only go to BL to shop or browse for reference. In all the years I've been a member I don't think I've ever even looked at the community side of it. Just doesn't interest me.

    2013 Galaxy Squad

I don't know about anyone else bt from where I'm standing having humans versus aliens could look a lot like species-ism and xenophobia. Humans versus robot, cyborg and other human space pirates is more palatable. Besides if Lego are willing to put out a theme where humans battle the undead then I can't see where the problem is. Especially as Space is a fantasy theme in essence. I do take your point that the model has been humans versus aliens for a while but 2009 gave us Rench in SP3. CMF has given us Space Villain in 2011 and Evil Mech this year. All sporting Blacktron insignias. Clearly there is love for Blacktron. And lets not forget that 2008/9 gave us Agents. Humans versus humans, cyborgs and robots. Not space but definitely Sci-Fi. I'm not going to bang on endlessly but I do think Blacktron or something incredibly similar with a twist of Dr. Inferno's gang from Agents would make a great foe for the GS team. Robot on robot battles. Mech versus mech. Way more exciting than puke green bugs.

    2013 Galaxy Squad

Introducing more squad colours and having the squad face a different foe would refresh it enough. Blacktron III perhaps. With the ~Blacktron guys having a mix of humanoid, cyborg, mech and alien minifigs. A proper rough and ragtag team. Bring in flame yellowish orange, dark purple and white GS team members with different skills. Give some of them beefed up space suits like the Galaxy Patrol CMF. Bigger weapons and an HQ. I really, really don't want Galaxy Squad to end. I don't like the bugs or their vehicles but the squad themselves are the best space team since Futuron. Just one more year of it. Two more waves. Galaxy Squad vs Blacktron III. It'd be awesome!

    New parts in 2013

Also it'll fit perfectly with the female skier CMF in her pale purpley-pinky outfit. I don't think any of my City criminals will be seen wearing it though.

    New parts in 2013

Yaaaaaay! Go me. I'd had an image of it on my laptop since the German Toyfair but it was cropped so I couldn't remember where it was from. Then I thought "Lilac - Must be a Friends set." So I went to Google image search and scanned through the 2013 Friends pics. Aaaah Google, I love thee so.... And there it was. Apparently the advent calendar hits retail in September and will cost $29.99. I think I'm going to add the lilac (I don't know the official colour name) cap to my Bricklink wanted list and wait until a few show up there.
  21. Perhaps a faint sack cloth texture on the scarecrow head would help it look more odd and less cute? Less like a very tanned villain. lol. I do like the scarecrow though. the sewn up mouth is creepy enough while still maintaining the cartoon look of Lego minifigs.

    Any Doctor Who Fans?

Excellent work.Though I think the white specks in the eyes need to be bigger. Lego have been putting quite large light reflections in the eyes which avoids the characters having dead looking eyes or slightly evil gazes. The size you have them now would probably not even register when printed to scale. Black ink bleed and so on. Make the white dot about a quarter of the overall eye size and it should look ok when printed. That's my only recommendation / critique.

2014 City Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I was being subtle, you missed my inference.
  25. If there are classic figs in the mix I'll definitely be skipping them. I still have plenty of original Johnny Thunders and Blue spacemen in good condition. Abe, Michaelangelo, NBA Allstar, Shakespeare, Panda suit guy, fitness girl, hi-viz jacket cop - They can all come live with me.
