Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

Matthias doesn't much care for all the drunken talk of missing comrades - what an unhelpful bunch of emotional codswollop - but Boomingham's words do intrigue the druid, not in a good way. Let the others fend for themselves? It doesn't impress Matthias that the man has no respect for the Sungold seal, or that he's only interested in the other Heroes as 'help'. It does, however, spark the gnome's ego to be included in 'the best fighters'... and Boomingham's final decision to spread the groups evenly sits well in the tiny hero's heart. Without betraying his internal disappointment in the human failings of this 'king', the druid gives his suggestions. "I will go with Master Atramor and Master Dyric to the Dragon House and tomb. It seems that group may be most in need of a healer, if, Lord Lawrence, you intend to take a group to a place of worship and the mistress there takes her group to find allies."

Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

Having listened attentively - if surreptitiously - to both conversations, Matthias presents his Sungold Badge before Boomingham. "Are you the King of Eubric, still? Will you be a king to these people, Lord Lawrence?" The tiny druid looks around the room, willing as much attention to himself as possible. "Who will lead us? Are we united? Or will we fall?" He seems larger with every word, though it's certainly an illusion created by his too-deep-for-his-size voice. "Master Dyric, do you intend to lead us? Lord Lawrence, I was ready to foillow you as king once; will you fill that roll, at least for those of us here?"

"I am well, Master Dyric, though I do not like what is happening now; and yourself?"

Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

Matthias drinks in all the talk in silence, wondering whether the strength and assurance he felt during the last mission was all an illusion. It certainly seemed so.

The last to know (of course), Matthias slinks into Lady Luck's Locale and does his best to find an unnoticed spot at the bar, but trips over a bump in the floor on his way to the barstool. He grins sheepishly at the bartender as he orders a cider.

I concur - @Waterbrick Down I just saw the new quest and Matthias would like to enter... is it too late?

    Heroica RPG - Marketplace

Matthias stops by Smokebeard's Smithy to have the faux dwarf remove an Emerald from the Wood Spear [-50 gold]. He lets the Smith keep the spear [+20 gold].
  8. Matthias packs up, running his hands over the Extraordinaire, feeling the power of the Anvil flow through him [+1 WP]. He says goodbye to the party and heads for Eubric alone.

Alright, alright, don't get greedy, Mister "I already play the most powerful character in the game and I want to solo the Fields and what do you mean no Grogmas?!"
  11. Matthias speaks plainly. "Calder Den is dead. The deed you wished of us is done. Jeremiah Den has destroyed all that remained of the terrible work his father was doing, and now he mourns in his father's house. I advise you to share his sorrow, to make whatever overtures of friendship you can muster. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all... from now on, that includes the Dens." It's clear the tiny druid is taking the hero role pretty seriously here.
  12. Matthias quietly picks out the Nostrum and Wooden Spear, packs them away awkwardly, and sits on his cannon to see what the Luke, Jeremiah, and Galedo will do now.
  13. Just noticed this: Den should only have 600 health, and Matthias should have 20 more gold. Math below, changes are bold. > Matthias vs Bodyguard 1: Critical Hit (Rolled a 2 and 5; 12 (WP) × 2 (Critical Hit) + 30 (level) + 15 (bonus) = 69, × 2 (*Encouraged*) = 138 damage + Mural: 106-138 = KOd + L1: 138 * 2 (*Darkness*) - 2 (SP) = 274, 156 - 274 = KOd, Matthias +10 gold + Guy: 138 * 2 (*Darkness*) = 276, 199 - 276 = KOd, Matthias +10 gold > Petaldan vs Bodyguard 2 vs Guy vs Pal: Hit (36dmg, 139-36=133HP) > Addok-Zo vs Guy vs Pal: Critical Hit (2*11 + 10 - 2 = 29dmg, 133-29=104HP) > Jeremiah vs Pal: Razzmatazz (37 dmg to all enemies before SP; Den at 828HP; L1 KOd; Pal at 69HP; P3 at 9HP; Excited at 53HP; -4 ether, gains gold?) >Matthias vs Excited: Hit (Rolled 3 and 6; 12+30+15=57x2x2=228dmg; Excited KOd; Pal KOd; Den at 600HP; +20 gold

After a few Zepher quests, Matthias is designed for this. Don't feel bad - it's fun to steamroll a quest's worth of enemies!
  15. Matthias nods at Vindsval. "You have stood before this sorcerer before, I believe. If he will not disarm and submit to justice, strike for your god - and strike true." Holding his Stave of Grasping Thorns (SoGT), the druid calls up the power of the Anvil to add his WP to Vindsval's for the turn. Suggested Battle Order: > Matthias: Bearer of the Anvil (WP, SoGT) vs. Vindsval > Vindsval: Wrath Lance (?) vs Calder > Luke: Heal (Pulsar Scepter) vs. first injured party member; if none, do nothing > Matthias: Heal (SoGT) vs. first injured party member; if none, Bearer of the Anvil (WP, SoGT) vs. Vindsval > Vindsval: Wrath Lance (?) vs Calder Others do nothing Hooray, done with finals again!
  16. Math check above; nothing wrong with the first calculation for Vindsval but I left it in because it was fun to do. Matthias stands dumbstruck as the half-giant tears a man clean in half, then nearly obliterates a Pongcanis. The druid knows he can blow people apart with his cannons, but Half-Born does it with a simple lance, and the vindicator only has one arm! For half a second, he's back in his family's barber shop, listening wide-eyed to tall tales from heroes in Drandora. He forgets himself for just a moment. "Aye, BigJob, there's the way to swing that thing!" As Petaldan takes up a Sentinel's position, Matthias motions his mêlée comrades forward to the front row. Recognition of the moment dawns on Matthias and a grim grin gleams under the brim of his tall hat, the joy of battle bursting forth in a tiny gnome belly laugh as he taunts the wizard. "Still so sure of yourself, old man? Care to reconsider your options?" He doesn't wait for an answer, but attacks again before calling forth more ether to patch up Yavarr (if needed), or attacking again. Suggested Battle Order and Actions: Vindsval: Wrath Lance vs. Pong Merc 1 > Ezeran: Darkness Spell (Ooze Wand) vs. Pong Merc 2 > Ezeran: Darkness Spell (Ooze Wand) vs. Pong Merc 3 > Matthias: Extraordinaire vs. Bodyguard 1 Galedo: Unarmed attack vs. Mural Petaldan: Brine Blade vs. Bodyguard 2 > Addok-Zo: Crossbow vs. Guy > Jeremiah: Darkness Spell (Ancestral Staff) vs. Pal Vindsval: Wrath Lance vs. ??? Luke: Heal (Pulsar Scepter) vs. Ezeran > Matthias: Heal (Stave of Grasping Thorns) vs. first injured party member; if none, Extraordinaire vs. Bodyguard 1 I put all the attacks against Pong Mercs before Matthias' first turn so that he'll have the maximum chance of reviving Vindsval and Ezeran in case of insta-kill.
  17. Tactical notes: I believe due to equipment changes, Petaldan is only immune to Darkness, Vindsval's attacks do not cause any effects, and Matthias' defense stat is now 9. I'm noting the third Pongcanis Mercenary as "Pong Merc 3" instead of "Pong Merc 1". Vindsval, *Reinforced* and in the back row, can take free hits from Calder all day (40.2*3 = 120.6 damage, 120/2 = 60 damage (back row), 60 damge - (30*2 SP) = 0 damage. Let's leave Calder for after the Mural is down; this means Vindsval has to be first in the battle order. Vindsval, Matthias, and Ezeran (all *Lucky*) should take the Pong Mercs to reduce the Pong Mercs' instant-kill ability. The same thing applies to Buddy; he calls more enemies with his special, so someone *Lucky* should attack him. Matthias, *Immune to Bound*, should take the Loyal Bodyguards if possible. Putting him on the first bodyguard has the extra benefit of making the Mural *Fragile*. While putting Ezeran (and Vindsval's second turn) below Matthias in the order means Ezeran's target might be *Fragile* and therefore take more damage, I'm inclined to put Ezeran second in the order just in case we take a free hit from one of the Pong Mercs (if Matthias needs to cast healing for his second turn). The hit would do 12 damage to Matthias, who has 42 health, or 11 damage to Ezeran, who has 72 health. Suggested Battle Order: (">" means act from the back row) > Vindsval: Ludeas vs. Buddy > Ezeran: Darkness Spell (Ooze Wand) vs. Pong Merc 13 > Matthias: Extraordinaire vs. Bodyguard 1 Galedo: Unarmed attack vs. Mural > Petaldan: Brine Blade vs. Bodyguard 2 > Addok-Zo: Crossbow vs. Guy > Jeremiah: Darkness Spell (Ancestral Staff) vs. Pal > Luke: Pulsar Scepter vs. Excited Guard > Vindsval: Ludeas vs. Pong Merc 1 > Matthias: Heal (Stave of Grasping Thorns) vs. Injured Party Member; if no one injured, Extraordinaire vs. Pong Merc 2 Calder: Free Hit vs. Vindsval (0 damage) Pong Merc 2: Possible Free Hit vs. Ezeran (1.5*22.66 = 34, 34/2 = 17, 17 - 6 = 11 damage) Matthias immediately fires off a round at the first Bodyguard and begins to shout out encouragement to the others as he reloads and checks his comrades before attacking the second Pongcanis. "Mister Galedo, tear down this wall! Leave the sorcerer for now - we can deal with him once his protections are removed and you will all see how pathetic he really is."
  18. Matthias shakes his head in mock shame on Den's behalf. "Really? 'Leave so I can kill all these people and I'll throw you some scraps when I take over the world'? You need to work on your sales pitch. Do you not know that we are Heroes?" It's plain in the druid's voice that that final word really is important to him. He continues. "What could you offer us? Immortality? Life eternal to deal with the blood of these people on our hands? I have swum in the Fountain of Youth; I have crossed the planes of the Gods; I bear the power of creation in the Anvil of Orrick. Your offer would be insulting if it were not so evil as to be immediately dismissed. To end your despicable reign will be a pleasure." By the end of his speech, the gnome is in rare form, standing on his big cannon and red in the face. He gives a final glare at the three men before hopping down and raising the cannon in their direction - quite a sight to behold, the cannon being much bigger than him and still somehow fitting perfectly to his shoulder. "Surrender now and face justice... or just face justice. Your choice."
  19. Matthias nods his agreement and readiness.
  20. Matthias accepts the loot and wraps the Fur Armor around his tiny back. He offers the Bomb XX, Ice Bomb, Air Bomb, and Fire Bomb to Galedo. "Think you'll be able to use these? They're simple - just pull the pin and throw 'em." Uncorking a fancy bottle, the druid downs a Hero's Cocktail compliments of Lord Guffington.
  21. Matthias has also gotten plenty of gold already because of his Hunter's Plate - he'll take the bombs if no one else wants them, but he really doesn't need any loot. If no one else can wear the Fur Armor, he'll wear it for the remainder of the quest since he has an extra slot (hooray level 30) and no backwear.
  22. Matthias nods assent. "Let's get to your grandfather, quickly," he says to Den.
  23. A bit surprised at the child knight's reaction, Matthias pats Petaldan's shield and Vindsval's knee. "You two forgotten how to swing those big swords?" "What 'research' do you mean? And how, precisely, does one conduct a quest for ultimate and selfish power 'humanely'? And what will you do when politely asking you grandfather to knock it off has no effect?" Matthias emphasizes his words with air quotes and a wave of his brightly painted cannon. It's plain he has little patience for the sniveling wizard.
  24. Matthias waits for the others to get in their licks before he takes aim at Guards 4 and 6. Matthias should go at the back of the battle order again (after Luke's heals). > Matthias: If any party member injured, Heal (Stave of Grasping Thorns) vs. injured party member; otherwise, Extraordinaire vs. Guard 4 > Matthias: If any party member injured, Heal (Stave of Grasping Thorns) vs. injured party member; otherwise, Extraordinaire vs. Guard 6
