TESTUDO - the Roman tortoise/turtle

"He came, he saw, he conquered.... Albeit very very slowly!"

14852260926_8cc9b3d48d_z.jpg

DSC03602 by g.nat, on Flickr

Inspired by, and named after the battle formation made famous by the Roman legions. A testudo (or tortoise) was formed when a rectangular body of troops used their shields to form walls and a roof covering themselves and their comrades. This gave them protection against missile fire (javelins, slingshot, arrows etc) while advancing against an enemy.

Thanks for looking!!

This is my first entry to this competition; I went for cuteness. (I haven't had a look at the other entries yet).

Edited to only say: I'd have loved to follow the rules and "Post each entry in a single post in this thread." However, the forum's settings always auto-combine my posts, so consider everything below as a new post.

My second attempt of a turtle; this time I went for tininess. (I haven't had a look at the other entries yet).

Dave the Turtle Dove is a timid creature. Despite his ability to fly, he is scared of heights, which is why he is never seen without his trusty helmet on his head. (Going to try to upload better pictures, I am ever amazed how lighting affects the entire shot)

Box Turtle

A distant relative of today's box turtles, the true Box Turtle was obviously doomed from its first contact with humans in the 17th century. Just a few have survived in the wild, relying on their ability to escape from their shell.

Armed to the teeth with a ferocious orchestra of tactical artillery,

all conveniently hidden under an adjustable triple reinforced ultra titanium shell, the Titan Turtle 800 is the terror of the galactic battle field.

What would a turtle look like if it were designed using the parts selection and building techniques of the classic space sets from the 80s? Perhaps something like this!

(Built using old gray for your enjoyment.)
