SoNE Contest Episode V: Secret Plans

- Re: the freebuilds, I'm not sure I see the point of building on another planet...especially when it hasn't been covered in one of the main Episodes yet? You've got the entire of Endor to explore anyway!! :classic:

I was hoping to do some back story in the freebuild and have the freedom to build in a variety of environments

Great to see all of this is still being taken care of, and in good hands too :sweet:

It would correspond to using custom stickers in real life, but only digitally. So if I don't have any stormtroopers, but I decorate some white torsos with a sticker that is as similar as possible to the official priting, would that be okay? And if I use stickers that do not attempt to replicate existing prints or stickers?

Thanks, t's always nice to be appreciated! If you're interested in what I'm hoping to achieve with the tag, have a look at my CB folder in Brickshelf....the actual version will be a different design, and hopefully suitably edited :classic:

Re: the printing, I'll make a decision for this Episode: that's fine with me, provided that you're only trying to replicate an official Lego print style for the minifigures...I don't want to see any random/specialist/bounty hunter/special ops etc!!!!

I was hoping to do some back story in the freebuild and have the freedom to build in a variety of environments

Hi, I'm sorry that the rules weren't 100% clear on this (and to be honest I hadn't considered it!), but I don't think that freebuilds anywhere for this Episode are in the spirit of the game. As mentioned previously there's several thousand km2 of Endor which should be enough to keep you busy :classic:

Arrgh, back to the draing board! Do I look like the type to make some surreal force sensitive bounty - and part time ewok - hunter, specialized with force field nets and with a very own custom made ABXY-TIE-Falcon wing with double hyperbooster, not to mention my triple light saber blaster? I don't think so. I was more thinking about decorating an ewok, because having just a plain ball of ABS fur kind of ruins the realism I'm aiming for, and I don't think brick-built ewoks will turn out to be my new speciality...

EDIT: never mind... the ewok part doesn't support decorations in LDD. Not even multi-coloring... so I have to stick to surreal monocolored ewoks, alas! Or maybe someone has a good idea for brick built ewoks? Or is it allowed to photoshop these kind of decorations in on digital models (although that will be a very challenging job for me...), and if so, is it allowed for multiple pictures?

The tag is looking quite interesting too, although I have to admit I had to look it up in the Bricklink catalog first  !

@BEAVeR - Well, maybe that safety vest (LDD part #3840) combined with a hood (either the standard or the Medieval Market Village variety) on a minifig with short legs and a normal body would work.

Nice one, Lobot & co! But have you been thinking whether it's allowed to edit decorations in that exist, but you just don't own or have available in your favorite digital building program? I must say I have tried brick building ewoks with eskimo hoods (thanks for the suggestions by the way, VK-318), but still that wasn't very great, and I'm not sure whether I can come up with a engaging story if I'm not allowed to use them because that would require editing. So what do you think?

Awwww, I wanted a teddy bear Ewok tag ... but the death star plan is also cool though it looks like it's printed on a head instead of the 1x1 round brick

Minifigures is a real problem in LDD due to the missing decorations both on torsos and helms... For example it's impossible to get good looking stormtroopers, and the rebel troopers have to wear plain black shirts... So I'm in favor to use custom decoration if possible, but only if the decoration is a (exact) replica of an existing printings.

Edit: And only if you share your decorations

Glad some one agrees with me. But how do you dare to say that making a good looking stormtrooper is impossible when I showed how, and you even commented on that thread! If you want any particular decoration for a rebel trooper, I will be most eager to make it for you, to show my appreciation for you and all people who run (and participate in) SoNE.

@ MstrOfPppts: it's not a problem, because this part exists as well, it appeared in a Venator once. And even if it isn't an ewok, at least it is something to kill ewoks with...

I'm saying that whithout using custom decoration, LDD can't produce good looking stormtroopers... I mean better looking stormies, as making them looks good would be an impossible task :look:

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'm glad you like it :classic:

MstrOfPppts - I'd originally planned to use the Death Star 'Hologram' part from 75017 (part 3062bpb042) but even with my best attempts at photography it looked rubbish! In my defence the printing is very feint (slightly darker orange against an orange background!) so Masked suggested we use the CW version from set 8039, which just happens to be 'Minifig, Head with Gold Death Star Pattern' so you're spot on!!

And, as Bob said, if anyone wants to do a touch of LDD customisation of minifigures that's fine, provided that it's trying to replicate an original figure. I'm happy to be a bit more relaxed about the Ewoks (as they're cannon fodder anyway!!)

So, in essence, the rule regarding custom stickers in LDD, for this episode only, is that they may be used so long as they represent a reasonable effort to replicated a sticker or printed part not available in LDD but demonstrably available in real bricks. Correct? (I thought it would help if somebody tried to condense the multi-post conversation on the topic to something more concise.)

Yeah, it seems like every one is experiencing a very busy period. I have my exams (yikes!), and there are a lot of problems I have to solve for my entry. The custom decorations was one problem. And making realistic looking vegetation is a real pain in LDD with all those collision errors. That's what mainly slows me down, and the fact that I have unlimited pieces, isn't helping me either to keep it small. Then, my scene turned out to be a bit boring, so I decided to add in a vehicle. Now I just need some more vegetation and an entire irregular base, and a decent title, and then I can present it. But you can see things continue, no matter how slowly. And the fact that I always post way too long comments on other people's builds isn't helping either (but I do like it!). The thing that is slowing me down most though, is the fact that it has to be good enough to be worthy of a blog...

I haven't started my build yet, but I have big plans for it. I should be able to start on it this week. I finished up some freebuilds and need to get those posted as well since their story leads into my contest entry...

P.S.

The map is updated.

And we are still kicking rebel @$$, its a good thing that the "death star plans" tag looks so good, I actually think is the best SoNE prize tag so far, I can almost see it under my sig .

I hope to see it there soon, too! My entry should be done in a day or two - need to figure out the renders since LDD screenshots aren't my preference. For the Empire!

@ VK-318: if you don't figure it out in time (nad believe me, getting those things right can be quite a pain), my offer is still valid, especially since I have no MOCs of my own that need rendering. I look forward to all the entries still coming this week, especially if they ensure that tag appears under my picture!
