LEGO Ideas Discussion

CaptainRex101 over on Brickset's article makes a good point:

"The annual LEGO Ideas selection generally encompasses relatively specialised sets, including 21325 Medieval Blacksmith and 21327 Typewriter, alongside licensed products with broader appeal, such as 21326 Winnie the Pooh or 21328 Seinfeld this year. Since the three previous chosen submissions have occupied the more specialised category, something with a popular license seems probable this time.

On that basis, I think The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, My LEGO Totoro, or perhaps one of The Office submissions, are most plausible."

I'd love a single Marine Life aquarium for ~60$. I'm also enamored with the shaping of Samus' ship, so Metroid being approved would be quite the nice surprise.

I am for Samus Aran's Gunship.

It certainly would be good timing to approach a Metroid set or theme now, with the current hype for Metroid Dread as possibly one of the most successful Metroid games in Nintendo's history, and Metroid Prime 4 on the horizon. The main issues I could see would be the choice of subject (Samus' gunship from Super Metroid is iconic but not featured in the newest games), the violence of the franchise (Metroid is a great deal more mature and violent than Super Mario, and that violence is less abstracted and cartoonish), and the general question of whether Nintendo is interested in engaging in a program like Ideas that would share profits and credits with a fan designer (up in the air since despite the recent Lego Super Mario theme, no Nintendo-based project on Ideas has passed review).

I’m prepared for the worst, but if we could get one of Jazz Quartet, Castle of Blackwood Forest, Hyrule Castle, or Lisbon Train, I would be pretty happy

You Do realize that whatever Set will be chosen, we won't get it before 2023?

Therefore something like the LOTR map would be more suited, but that is just my hope for even more sets from middle earth.^^

Sure, but that doesn't change the fact that Metroid will likely be a much hotter property in the wake of Metroid Dread and Prime 4 than it was preceding those games (for context, its last new installment had been a remake of an older game for the 3DS and the two games prior to that were widely panned).

I think The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Those 2 sound very likely to me

The Nightmare Before Christmas has been done through CMF already. Even though it is obviously a fuller set, that there are cheap key figures out already makes it less attractive at the high price the set will be.

It sounds like you are talking about the WHOLE Nightmare Before Christmas in the CMF. Just two characters (Jack and Sally) from that CMF Disney Series 2, that’s it. However…you probably make a point.

Well, Jack Skelleton is not 100% accurate. I mean he is supposed to have a pair of Woody’s longer legs.

No, just the main two characters. Minifigs are a big selling point of some sets. Already having the main character from a theme or movie can affect sales of larger sets that are expensive and just add generic bricks.

Yes, Jack would look better with longer legs, but given they didn't even give Woody those Woody legs last time around in Toy Story 4 sets, I doubt they will be bringing them back. And even with them, Jack would not be 100% accurate, no minifigures ever are.

That's what makes it likely IMO. They already have some of the molds they'd need

The set could include different face prints, different versions (like Jack dressed as Santa) or other popular characters like Oogie Boogie, Zero, the Mayor or the kiddos: Lock, Shock, and Barrel

The way they said “pick which set you think will win” makes me think there’s going to be one chosen.

Where do they use that language? On the blog post it doesn't have anything that suggests only a single set will be picked.

However, that doesn't stop them picking only a single set!

Some of the comments suggesting five sets are very optimistic. As nice as that would be.

This is probably the hardest review to guess the outcome for in years. There are a ton of really good really well presented projects this time. With quite a few that radiate "perfect ideas set:

There are also quite a few "I can't see them doing that!" entries, which are often the ones they pick.

Which ones have they picked so far that were surprising?

Although these results were a bit disappointing, it gives me hope at the same time.

All 3 of these projects that were selected were in a LEGO Ideas review in the past, but were rejected then, but then re-uploaded and now got picked!

Many people are saying that the LEGO Ideas system is clearly broken and that getting 10K votes isn't difficult anymore, especially if we have a batch of 57 projects... Well maybe the LEGO Ideas team are looking for projects that get 20,000 votes instead now :P or 30,000 votes in the case of LEGO The Office (even more when you consider the other people who made The Office 10K projects)

Some of the best projects in this batch should be re-uploaded, like House of Chocolate, Tutankhamun (unless LEGO is planning on ripping that one off too...)

I thought Matthew Ashton said they would do any more sitcom sets while taking about Queer Eye. But they must be selling well.

Snow White and the seven dwarfs is still under review too, so sounds like they want to make it if they can. And it's lovely, especially with the updated design. But another one that had to reach 10k twice.

@NickLafreniere I feel similarly: hopeful. They picked up franchise that many people were actually wanting for years, plus a beautiful non-licensed project that was also quite popular in the comments.

Of course, castle and modular fans would really like to see their call answered, but I think Ideas is not the place to expect that from right now.
