[SoNE Ep. IV] Sector B 'Operation Twilight'

Recommended Posts

gallery_2351_18_164.gif

The rebels have gained acces to the detention sector and their plan was really simple. Blow up the main generator to power off the prison cell rays and escape in the dark. But what they did not count on is that a squad of highly skilled Shadowtroopers was sent to this sector. With the nightvision integrated in their helmets, the blackout is exactly what they are waiting for ...

Bonus image of the blackout and a stupid rebel scaring the colleagues with the flashlight (thanks for the idea Ninja Nin!):

Edit: Better safe than sorry catching last minutes I posted the images first and then edited the text in. Clumsy as i am, I forgot to mention that this is sector B (tough it's obvious from the build). So would a mod please squeeze Sector B between the [soNE Ep.IV] and Operation Twilight, which could be put into quotes, please

Edit 2: Thanks Lobot for taking care of it!

Good build MstrOfPppts!

I like what you did with the door and I like those greebles. The tubes under those grilles is a great idea!

Beautiful as usual. I really like the base you've made. More and more people are using the reverse side of the "brick" bricks for Star Wars and I really like the look they add.

The most interesting part for me is the door with the yellow and gray cheese slopes and the grate removed from the floor. Other than that I find it to be too static.

I unterstand you completly, since I was wondering how to revitalize the MOC a bit more. Though I must admit I'm not too fond of putting dead bodies in my MOCs. Also the posability of the minifigs is very limited and a sitting rebel looked weird. And I prefer my MOCs to show a neutral scene, that goes with the story regardless of the episode results. Maybe rebels can still escape from the Shadowtroopers and my intention really was to illustrate the "calm before the storm" - 15 seconds till the detonation in main generator and the blackout ...

Beautiful build as always. You've done a great job with the curved walls and all the details, and the greebling is amazing. Excellent job!

Great build, MstrOfPppts! We're counting on your build to win this sector ... :devil_laugh:

I love the greebling, and I don't know if anyone else noticed the red & green lights over the closed blast doors, but that's one of my favorite clever details. I wish I knew how you did it!

I agree concerning the posing; this build reminds me of some of those cliffhanger moments in movies, when you know something's going to happen, and soon, and you're hanging on the edge of your seat waiting for it. From a more practical standpoint, a passive-looking build with the minifigures in non-fighting attitudes make the rest of the build a lot easier to see; violent minifigs do draw attention from the inanimate portions of the build.

I really like this type of scene, with a sense of anticipation of all hell about to break loose!

I like the fact that it's dual level as well, adding height to the build. There are some great SNOT techniques here (of course :classic: ) but I can't help feeling you've gone a bit over the top with the wall greebling, mainly in the upper level. I know you are trying to avoid a blank wall and create interest, but sometimes a wall is just a wall. Would a prison really have that much exposed machinery/electonics on a detention level? Not too sure about the crates either they seem a bit out of place. Storage right outside a prison cell?

In spite of my personal niggles, still a great build !

... I wish I knew how you did it!

Well, all you have to do is ask ...

It's a technique I've used in a previous freebuild and I really like the look of it since you get rid of the half plate edges of the slopes. It makes the middle plate lifted for half a plate from the floor, but that's not an issue or you could level the floor with it if required. Note that there's a half plate gap between the cheese slopes, since they are only half plate high on one side an 2 plates on the other. That could be replaced by a 1x1 LBG plate and 2 1x1 tiles ...

Well, there's a grating open in the floor in front of the cells. Maybe someone was working on a repair here, and those boxes are for parts, tools, scanners, or something else to be used in the repair? You have a good point, though. There is a certain tendency to add boxes to any and all available Imperial floorspace, though I notice the Rebel sites, like Hoth, and neutral sites, like Bespin, don't have that kind of clutter. I wonder why that is.

Genius! I've been puzzled for ages about how to remove that ugly half-plate edge!

Impressive build ! I really like it.

And I see you got promoted to Shadowtrooper.

Saying of the blackout, I wish there's an edited photo, completed dark with only the red, green lights glow.

And of course the eyes of the Shadowtrooper helmet, gives out the intimidating look.

Sorry for being so late with my comments...

Fantastic build as always MstrOfPppts, as usual I like everything I see in your mocs. The second level doorway and how the area around it comes together is my favourite part, but I also really like the shaping of the wall and the greebling is of course top notch!:thumbup:

And thank you for sharing that technique, I've just been out of my dark ages for a little more than a year and have a lot to learn!

You have proven yourself worthy of your promotion, because man this creation is beautiful.

Apart from all the clean lines we've become to expect from you, you've thrown in some of you greebling goodness. I like the consistency in it (the radar dishes, 1x2 grated slopes and telephone pieces come back regularly), still all the different configurations make it very diverse. It's unbelievable what you can do with even a single strip of studs, because I quite like those greebles in between the cells. And that relief you created around the place where the troopers are looking down upon the silly Rebels, is really awesome. But what actually drew my attention even more, is the fact how you used those tiles on the wall to give some extra details and texture, because they really look like panels that belong there. Well done! you've even continued it to the floor, with the square tiles in front of the cells and the 2x4 tiles in the hallway. That gives everything a very well-structured look, and I like that. It's a pitty there's a bit of a mess of irregular tile patterns in between the two sections at the corner...

It's quite surprising, but very nice, that you rounded that corner off. On the other hand, I'm not too fond of those black pipes at the wall. They're quite hard in comparison to the rest of the scenery... But when I see those pipes under those grill tiles, that's all forgotten in an instant... another thing I really like is the shape of the hallway on the upper level. It's sad we don't get so see more of that. And now we're talking about the hallway on the upper level... What is actually the use of that opening that leads nowhere? Is it an acces to an extending bridge (but why?), or is it a vantage point (but why isn't there any kind of fence or means of communication?)... But it looks great anyway.

Back on the ground, I haven't said how I like those simple cells, but am a bit puzzled... if I squeeze my eyes, do I see a yellow minifig in the left cell? Good job on the figs anyway. Those shadowtroopers look really good and consistent, while they are different. And those custom weapons for the Rebels are a nice little touch. But some more accesories for the Rebels would have been nice. I can imagine they'd bring some equipment to cut the power lines with them. Some crates on a carrier, or bags distributed among the troops. Then you could get rid of those Imperial crates, as others have pointed out, and replace them with equipment that makes more sense in the story. Maybe a Rebel technician laying down on the floor, tinkering with the supply lines would bring more variety in the minifigs, and somehow I've got the feeling the Rebel that's facing the viewer is communicating, so a headset for him would be nice.

But what are those suggestions in the face of such a good build. i haven't even mentionned the nice use of color... but well, I guess you already know how much I like your builds.

Thanks everyone for the comprehensive feedback. I see there's quite some complaining about the content, which is great, meaning the build itself is OK!

I will not beat around the bush, so here are the simple explenations:

I used a L shaped plate next to the door to connect the corner decorative build not to leave little gaps in the build. To cover the stud I simply used the crate. There's a similar reason for the irregular pattern of the ground tiles in the other corner.

The extra crates there are to hide the Shadowtroopers since they looked a bit too exposed without them - even rebels are not that blind ... besides I see nothing wrong with using the detention hallways for some extra storage capacities and anyway prisoners also require supplies to live ...

I agree about the upper black pipes, they looked a lot better when there was not so much greeble on the walls. And yes, sometimes the walls are just plain walls, but believe me it really looked borring that way. Once I started adding the greeble and all the bumps I might have gotten a little carried away. Yet still anything is possible in SW.

The big hole in the wall is meant to be some connection for delivering crates by a crane or conveyor. What, where, how? I don't know, the main reason was to stick in two extra shadowtroopers for I really didn't want to make the rebels look too incompetent with just two troopers taking them all out. There was a bridge planned but I simply skipped it for the fact that the build would become too dense and it'd be hard to see things underneath. The hole also gave me a great reason to use more colors!

About the rebels, they're just an escort squad, the generator is being blown elsewhere. I did want to put hair on someone but I forgot too. Looks like I was too proud of the 5 helms I just recently bricklinked for the SoNE purposes!

It's not a yellow minifig there (though why would that be strange in a SW universe - yellow Twi'lek ... ), it's the movies Nute Gunray in the CW Nute Gunray clothes. The images were taken too fast and I didn't notice the beam bar covers the faces of the prisoners.

Sorry about these bloopers, I'll put more content-vise effort into my next builds and rethink things twice!
