Indeed but it fall into the new driving ring system category,

Not sure of what you mean here. How would it be different to any other clutch gear except for the fact it would have to be 2L wide?

Being 2L wide, it will not look like a gear anymore but it will look a specialised compound piece. It would be a whole new kind of gear and not the bro of the 16t, 20t and 24t clutch gear imo

That might be the inspiration for the next 42065/42095 clone.

The trend is that the flagship will be the biggest/among the biggest machinery of each kind.

There are already

- Biggest front excavator
- Biggest hauler
- Biggest bulldozer
- Biggest crawler crane (I guessed this one correctly based on the previous flagships)

Last year I wrote a list of the remaining biggest things that TLG hasn't done.

- Bucket trench excavator
- Simple hydraulic boom excavator
- Dragline excavator
- 6x6 mobile crane
- 8x8 mobile crane
- Tower crane
- Backhoe
- Mining dump truck
- Combine harvester
- Biggest front loader

- Biggest reach stacker
- Biggest forklift
- Biggest telehandler

Let's see if the flagship fall into which one for 2023 or 2024 (if the Liebherr crane is released in 2023)

Now that the biggest crawler crane, or at least Liebherr's biggest, has been done, I wanna put my bet on the next "biggest" thing that TLG will do for flagship. Given how much resources 42146 consume TLG I think they are going for something mechanically simple. Therefore I think the next flagship will be the "biggest front loader," or at least the biggest one in the current lineup of one company.

Even if it's not the next flagship I think sooner or later there will be a flagship front loader. And the biggest question I have is that what will it have to differentiate itself from 42030. Perhaps even bigger tires?

Nice idea. I think if front loader would be Liebherr, it could be white = differentiation from 42030. We will have space front loader this year. I bet we won't get two loaders in one year.

If the flagship's not front loader then my bet is on a mining truck. The last mining truck was in 2016 already.

Me too. A properly sized (in the scale of 8069 or bigger) backhoe is loooong overdue.

On a serious note, if you really want a Backhoe JCB it'd be better for it to not be a flagship, cuz the flagship is gonna be all about the C+ stuff, which means there will be the hub and several motors and not much space left for functions.

I’d love to see a large CAT or Liebherr Mining/Haul Truck, but the problem with it is apart from its looks it’ll be boring as it would only have drive, steering and tipper bed operations. They don’t have suspension so I’m not sure where the interest would be.

Well, if you're going to use the term "Flag Ship", why not go for a model of the battleship U.S.S. Missouri done on the same scale as the Titanic - or perhaps an aircraft carrier like the U.S.S. Gerald Ford? I don't have a clue where the heck I would put it, but I'd work to find space somewhere.

Given all the controversy surrounding the Osprey, moral groups would rip LEGO limb from limb if they launched a battleship or an aircraft carrier.

TLG doesn't do military models; that's a known thing.

Might be more appealing if they included a smaller truck with it like this:

If there's a flagship Mining Truck it's probably gonna be similar to 42114 I guess.

Got it - fictional intergalactic killing machines OK, real earth bound ones, not. Alrighty then!

The key word there is "fictional".

TLG's consistency on what is considered "acceptable" or "unacceptable" in terms of violence/warfare/killing is a whole can of worms. Examples: Indiana Jones, Overwatch, 10226, 10024.

What about dragline excavator ? F.E. Liebherr HS 8300. We never saw such machine in Technic. The main idea is that quite a lot of parts could be reused from 42146 crwaler crane. Maybe it could be the thing not the next year but in 2025 when crane will retire.

I doubt there will be a dragline excavator, at least not a flagship one, because of how they work. The digging works mostly by gravity and having the bucket being dragged through stuff at a certain angle. Regular excavators or loaders already work quite poorly as Lego models because the stuff you dig is mostly smaller pieces that roll everywhere. A dragline is even worse in that regard. Also playability would suffer from the very slow speed you unwind the cables with (even worse effects than on a hydraulic to LA conversion) unsless Lego makes it some clever mechanism to let the bucket drop by disengaging the drive from the cable drum and let it spin free (in that case it would be a cool set for this mechanism alone)...

No suspension?

The T274 would also be nice at it is a fairly new machine. Could maybe make good use of the new tires from 42160, although the Unimog tires would fit better in scale for the 42100.

Thats the thing.

Sounding like an old record, but I crave:

- small truck with new 43.2x14 narrow tires

- backhoe

- grader

There's never been a proper grader so that's my wish for a flagship-scale Technic set.

Though I doubt it'll ever happen that scale considering the complexity. Perhaps it could also be conceived around 1000-2000 part range as a manual/pneumatic model in which case it would still probably be better than any C+ flagship could ever be.

A proper backhoe would also be great, regardless of license. Something like 8455 but more modern.

I struggle to see widespread appeal of a grader, although I know there is at least one very enthusiastic proponent.

What would it grade? Lots of 1x1 plates/studs wouldn't really work, finer material (e.g. sand - eek) would not work well with lego.

I acknowledge that lots of sets don't have great playability with lego pieces as the 'material' to move around. Two of my favourites, Volvo loader 42030, and BWE 42055, don't really work well with lego pieces (both are great with pasta shells). But for a grader, I just don't see a way for it to have good playability.

I don't think that's really a problem as many other sets can't really do any of what their real life counterparts can either (just look at every aircraft set or most watercraft sets or most of the agriculture machinery). For most Technic builders it's enough that the functions are there even when you can't really use them properly.
