Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Recommended Posts

I just got my first PAB cup... it was an interesting experience, the store was out of large ones, so I had to stick with a small one. Then there were three of us getting cups and only two tops.. so I ended up without a top, just had to get the top to fit and then stick it in a bag!

They had some nice pieces though. Lots of trans light and normal blue round 1x1s, trans clear 1x2 plates, brown 1x4 tiles, bamboo leaves (unfortunately I spotted those last)...

My build time got cut into, so I didn't get to enter the challenge. That means I'll be reworking the build. The upper surface I'll be making into a freebuild for later, and the main support detail piece will now be the top of a tower in my Anti-Climax: Nestlands Market build. I just got some work on it done today.

Sorry i'm new, but what's PAB stand for?

Pick a Brick, in the context the wall on the back of (some) LEGO stores.

I wasn't sure if I have put this in the right thread, but as it relates to Kaliphlin I have put the question here.

Having looked at the MOCs made by various Guild members, I would like to have a go at making some MOCs based around a desert port, like what you would see in Kaliphlin - The University MOCs in particular sayed me in this direction.

Not having a PAB store in my country, I'm not sure how to go about acquiring the parts necessary for building in the Kaliphlin style. How do Kaliphlin Members generally get their bricks? Prince of Persia sets seem to be in the right style and colour range, but I can't help but feel purchasing masses of bricks off ebay might be a cheaper method, albeit more time consuming.

Welcome Lord Butters! To be honest, Kaliphlin style is what you want to make it. The PoP sets are an excellent source. Also Jabba's palace, the grand emporium are good. I got quite a lot of my moc bricks from brick link.

Hey everyone!

A few months ago I stumbled (quite randomly) upon some MOC pictures online and felt the need to get into this world. As a kid I was always a fan of Castle so it makes sense I'd end up in the GoH forums, which I've been lurking for a while, and now I'm ready to come out of the shadows ^^ As I'm interested in developing a merchant/mercenary story, I think I should join Kaliphlin!

For now you can see a pic of "entrepreneur" Q'adris on my profile, but I'm working on a small introductory MOC for him and his second-in-command, Velvet. Should I be accepted in the guild, they will be based on the eastern coast, gravitating towards the north

Welcome Qiadris! We are very happy to have you here! Nice start.

My charcters name is Heinsen. He's kinnda like Aladin from the Disney movie. He lives in a small village near the western coast of the Great Southern Ocean. The village is known for a not so wise wiz named Gleambeam. Lets get to the background of Heinsen. He was an orphan in Kaliphlin and was taken in by Gleambeam who actually turned out to be his uncle. Pretty crazy, right? So they live in a white-washed desert house in a coastal village. Sadly he hasn't found a magic lantern. Yet. That's all I have for now, but I'll post more as I think of I't. I hope I get in.

Welcome TUB32! Great to have Heinsen and his dog with us. Yes, Carson is an excellent builder.

I have been pretty inactive lately. Happy news, we have a beautiful baby and I am now a count (woooooo!) But in keeping with what seems to be the curse of our desert lands, I got fired 2 weeks ago. Well, on the bright side I might get more building time.

Congratulations on the baby robuko!

Sorry to hear about the firing however, I hope there's new opportunities around the corner.

Congratulations on the new title as well! I also noticed my number of posts had four digits now, crazy to think all of those have been made within a year (only lurked before January last year) and that at least 95% of that has been here in GoH :classic:

Thank you all for being such an awesome community!

Great to hear about the new addition, but I am really sorry to hear about the job. I hope something comes up soon for you.

Congrats Robuko! Happy to hear about your baby! The first one?

And of course sad to hear about the job! Hope all works out for you!

Congrats robuko.

How many GOH babies does this make now?

On that note, Tuesday I'll be placing an order that includes Duplo, as well as Friends, a Lego Movie Figure, and some Chima (if still available).

I have some great plans ready to go. Anti-Climax is coming along, and the Fleshmage Bloodmane will be going to Nocturnus as the Nestlands Clans Embassador when the civil war has been settled.

I may have to scale back my plans for the LDD Lost Vega casino build, but it should still be epic.

There is also the proposed Sultan's Gate community build. Shall we build the Kaliphlin up while Avalonia splinters in their coming civil war?

One day while Heinsen was adventuring outside of the village he found a Tontorc (I'll give a description later) walking near lava. A little too close to the lava. He walked towards the Tontorc to warn him. When he got there he was about to fall in! Heinsen took out his rope and threw half of it to him. When the Tontorc caught it Heinsen tuged on the other end until he was clear of the lava. After that the Tontorc was saying something in Orcish that Heinsen couldn't understand. It really ment, "You saved me! I owe you my life!" So the Tontorc followed him home. Heinsen asked his uncle Gleambeam about him at his house.(he knew how to speak Orcish) Heinsen found out later that the Tontorc's name was Yodarnian and that he owed him his life. it was pretty much a win-win situation.

A Tontorc is an endangered race living in Kaliphlin and Avalonia. They travel in tribes and eat fruits and veggies. When they do eat meat they eat fish and goat. They live in tepees and sell potions and small weapons when they can.

Congrats on the new addition robuko!

There is also the proposed Sultan's Gate community build. Shall we build the Kaliphlin up while Avalonia splinters in their coming civil war?

I'm all for starting up the Community Build for Sultan's gate. I need some inspiration to pull out the bricks and get building again, and I think we will have a bit of free time between the main challenges since Avalonia is up next. This may also bring in some more new blood and get all the old blood building again (me included!) since we have been a very quiet guild so far. We can also kick start some university credits with this too!

I've gone back and pulled information from the previous discussions on it since they were pretty spread out between the threads, and it seemed like these were the main ideas that have been fleshed out so far.

1. Inspiration for the look of the town was Aragon, Spain

2. Fortified town on top of the Great Escarpment, traders would follow a small path up to the Great Gate to enter the city.

3. Located on the main trading route between Nocturnus and Mitgardia. The town would be made up of many merchants, houses, markets and defensive structures and towers. The main entrance would be the gate, and at the highest point of the town would be an old castle.

4. The fortified wall color is primarily tan, and since it is on the lower end of the escarpment it would be no more than 10-12 studs high and six studs wide. The new walls are built upon the ruins of the old wall, and all sections are similar but not necessarily identical due to this.

5. The town right now is made up of many temporary buildings, and they are located both inside and outside the walls. Most buildings utilize the old ruins of the town and are made up of primarily stone and clay. Wood would be more of an accent to the building and a luxury item since it is scarce and hard to carry in. The city outside the wall is more temporary with tents and quickly made structures while the city inside the walls have more permanent buildings.

I did not see in previous discussions that a timeline or map has been put into place yet, so we would need to discuss that. How long did we want this project to run, and did we want to implement a map with plots of land that can be claimed?

I would be more than happy to be the point person on this and get things rolling for the guild, but I do not want to step on anyone's toes since it was originally DaMaximus's idea that started all of this. I know the majority of us in the guild are very busy and have limited building time right now, but I do have enough free time through the fall to help roll things along if no one else has objections to it.

Also, with Admin permission (I have not approved this with them yet), I am willing to donate set 79012 (Mirkwood Elf Army), and three Kaliphlin inspired part packs as prizes for the community build of Sultan's Gate. I would also front the shipping costs of the prizes to any winners worldwide.

If I can get permission and there is no objections to having some prizes, I would leave the set up to the council to decide how we should pick the winner for that. For the part packs I would like to use those for all the MOCs relating to the community build. I was thinking for every two MOCs made, you would get your name entered into the lottery and at the end winners would be picked randomly from everyone in the bucket. The numbers of entries you currently have could be tracked in the main thread, so everyone knows exactly where they are at. That way everyone who participates has a chance of winning something and it is not dependent on the size of your collection or skills - only on your willingness to create and help build the city. I would also like to have a stipulation that it is one prize per person so that no one person takes home everything and they are spread across the members of the guild. Anyone have objections to this? If there are none, I will reach out to the Admins to see what I need to do to get permission for this part of the community build.

Lets get the discussion rolling, and Sultan's Gate opened :excited:

If you have enough free time to get things rolling on this I think you should probably be the one to set it all up (thread and stuff) especially as you're willing to donate prizes (really generous of you there). Looks good right now, I do think though that given the random parts pack giveaway you should reserve the right to DQ any entries that really don't show much time put into them. Is there going to be a size limit? I wouldn't think a map is needed especially since Kali towns don't strike me (for the most part) as highly organized... especially a settlement like this which I would think would sort of have expanded over the years - and given your description,

As a member of the council (I am right?) I would say judging would probably be preferable for the set. Or voting. (Yeah, what else is there.) I'd be willing to judge, as long as the deadline was from June-July (or late May) I would have the internet access & time.

On a similar note I don't think we ever did anything with this?

Which reminds me, we were supposed to do a part two university challenge. I think we will schedule that one as a "holiday" build guild challenge. What does everyone think? Maybe start it around Nov 15th and end Jan 15th? I will see if I can get permission to get some prizes attached.

We seem to have a lot of good ideas that just get fried in the desert sand...

Lets get the discussion rolling, and Sultan's Gate opened :excited:

@Robuko, congrats! Sorry about the job situation though...

Sneaky Kaliphlins, trying to steal other guilds members. You guys aren't going to beat our enchanted pumpkin pies though.

I'm looking forward to seeing a Kali community build!
