Some adults, like me, would never consider buying a ‘City’ set.  The modular series was supposed to be primarily for the adult collector market.  True, modulars are still toys, but not to the same degree as the City sets.  So, City could have multiple police stations and it would be totally irrelevant to me. A modular police station would be welcomed.  After all, we have a fire station.  My interest in Lego is in the architecture series and to a lesser degree modulars.  Lego has ‘dumbed down’ the modular series with too much emphasis on playability and interior detail.  I understand that from a marketing stand point. But interior detail, playability and mini-fig faces are largely irrelevant to me.

This is exactly why they have both architecture and modular series

Release is tomorrow 12pm European time. Book store is a false flag. It’s a police station

I already have my own police station and hospital in the somewhat same style as the fire fighters building. I am finishing my modular LEGO store (that has the same style as the bank).

We'll see what it is, just be patient I would say :)

I believe it all comes down to personal taste and your LEGO collection. While nice to look at, the architecture sets are only meant for display. If you are someone like me, who has always had a preference for town sets and has still a built lego city, a modular is much more appealing as I can integrate it with what I have. Moreover, if you have a lego city, interiors are something almost essential.

For this reason, I would like to see some buildings which are not the typical ones from the city line. Also, I doubt LEGO would release a modularpolice station in the same semester as the city one

I do not care too much about playability either, although I feel it needs to be believable that LEGO characters would live inside.

As in, build the new modular on there?

I spend time between new modular releases building residential units.  Many based on the design of the PS residential unit.  Some on 16 wides and some on 32 wides.  Some designs just pulled out of the air with little though other than ‘what parts are in the inventory bin.’  I miss PS as it provided so many resources needed for a residential build.

Why’s that? They do it all the time with other lines (release less complex builds of the same thing at different price points)

Personally I’m hoping for a museum or art gallery, but I’d take a 1930s styled modular police station to go alongside the fire station

I have no interest in a City style police station though.

Well, the modulars are almost an extension of the city line, while usually the other themes have more differences among each other.

I agree 100%.  Most of those interior details will never see the light of day once on display in my city.

There will always be at least one =P

I bought a 'City' set the other day, the hospital. I just wanted the guy with the broken arm and bandage around his head. Then found out the xray machine actually works. I was floored! Hell, I love all Legos except the Friends theme as the figures just are too Polly Pocket to me, to each their own though. I am just a Lego addict.

Sorry - but have you seen that 2020 Police station? There’s a huge gulf between that dumbed down design and anything TLG would come up with for a modular police station. I really can’t see how they would be competition for each other.

Don’t get me wrong - I do pick up City train sets, boats and sets with interesting vehicles, but I rarely see a City building that appeals to me. They’re just too simple.

I saw the new City Police Station for 2020 and was rather disappointed. I like the ones from the late 80s early 90s that had base plates. I had the Police Headquarters from like 1990 but I was 7 so I lost a few of the pieces (not the people) and it was well played with. I just got the most recent hospital (as I mentioned in a comment above this) and I have yet to put it together but I love that one when I saw it in the store and got to take the display window down and play with it. I am 36 now and still collect legos and still set them up and create scenarios like fires or accidents or I have had robbers robbing the Brick Bank. If I had the room, I would have everything set up because they still fascinate me. I have 3 trains (the yellow with blue windows, the santa fe and the marsek) and the old school track with the metal rails =)

Other City sets coming out I would totally put with my modulars --- the street sweeper, and the bulldozer construction, the ice cream truck, the service station (for the cars), and the tuning workshop could have so much more but I also understand from a designer point of view, they leave them open for the imagination too. I always joke I am the + on the 6+ age listing =)

At Brick Con I saw a modular strip club, and I know Lego would never release anything that adult oriented, I'd love to build one on my own.

I heard about that! That would be fun to build I think. There is a guy out here in Vegas that has legos built into the walls in his house and one is the Omnia Nightclub. He might not be in Vegas, he may be in LA but I saw that and now I want that in my house when I get a house.

I love those old 80s and 90s sets too. They had much lower part counts but still seemed to convey the idea of a complete structure really well. I think it was the use of base plates and much larger individual structural pieces.

Funnily enough, the 2018 hospital was the last City building I picked up (two of them to mod into a bigger one). It was a rare exception.

Don’t get me started on old trains. I’ve spent far too much money buying the “classics” over the past few years and switching all my track to 9V. Now if only I had space to setup a permanent layout..

I have seen it, yes. What I am saying is that, while other themes like Architecture are obviously just meant for display, the creator expert modular buildings are something that can be fitted in a lego city comprising sets from the City line.

I can think of a few situations where, having both of them coming out at the same time, one would one for the CIty one. Let's say that the buyer has young kids: most likely the City one will have more playability and it contains characters from the show they are watching. Would you spend 180 $ for another police station in a few months?

Again, let's say you want to complete your city in a short time, but you do not have too much money. The City one may be a compromise.

In my opinion, I would avoid this overlap, although it could still sell very well.

It is true that City sets usually are simple, but small builds do not need to be complex in every case. My favourite town set is the Pizzeria set from 1994, which is a great example of that.

HAHA! All I have had is the old track, then when the new came out I was like, why would I want a wireless one? It will die faster than I can purchase batteries or charge it. The hospital was 30% off for Brick Friday so it gave me an excuse to get it. I should have got 2.

I think we’re going to have to agree to disagree.

I think the potential market is big enough to support both price points and don’t think TLG would consciously decide *not* to do a modular version in the same year as a City version

I may be wrong though.
