Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Sounds like fun, but considering how the DO was all about "cookie prohibition", I doubt that gambling would make its way into a modular.  It would be interesting to see how minibuilds could be done for slot machines, blackjack tables, craps, and the roulette wheel.

It looks like Lego did a really good job of keeping the new modular identity a secret.  So far, no one on any forum seems to know what it is, or at least they cannot say anything at this time.

Jamie Berard is now responsible for the Architecture and Creator Expert theme. That's great news!

Within a bit longer than 3 months, i should start building my XL version of the new 2017 modular....there should be rumours very soon now... Personally i think a bakery would be a good choice with a lunchroom on the first floor! Large window with lots of detail around it. New mould door with printed stained glass in it! Small delivery-van included.. lots of detail with a large oven and shelves with pastry and bread, croissants and so on. The lunchroom upstairs offers place to 8 visitors and look cosey with nice colors! The roof can be reached with stairs and has a small building on it, covering about 6x8 studs and has a fire-exit and a large cage with new-mould pigeons in it.. Two deck-chairs and a little table complete the whole building! Minifigs: ofcourse the baker and his wife selling the bread. The lunchroom has a waitress and a man with two kids. The delivery van is driven by a guy dressed in white and a blue/white checkered shirt... It is really worth waiting for...!!

From all the speculation / wishing we had for this year, this sounds the best by far.

Yeah, he held an 90 minute Q&A at Skaerbaek Fan Weekend. Bad news is that he is now basicly a manager, so he will not have that much time to design stuff (he will still do it, but less than before).

For practical reasons, I'm hoping another half and half modular like PS (my display cabin shelf fits only 2,5 modulars). One half could be a 2-story music shop (one floor for records and another for instruments) and a band training room in the attic. Another half could have some small shop in the first floor and apartments in the upper floors.

A bakery would be good, so would a good train station, but then you have to somehow get a train involved and the size of the current trains is too large for the modular line.  Hospital also good, the museum from the Ideas line revamped would be nice, going to be interesting to see, but if we continue the line of multi businesses then it has to be a mashup so could be a bakery combo with something.  Before the DO it was all one business so hopefully go back to that, but I doubt it.

When speculating here, you need multi business combo with story...the ideas presented are great but not sure what combo goes together.

As long as he has major say in the Modular line, its all good.

Technically true; the Pet Shop was just one business with one residential building, but it was still not only one building with only one business. Two businesses, two buildings. I wouldn't mind such an even split again.

I don't think that it's necessary to speculate about a multi-business combo. It's happened twice in a row, but that's not necessarily indicative of a permanent change--just a trend. After many buildings with similar footprints, it makes sense that the designers would want to work in a little variety to avoid feeling stale. There's a good chance that it'll be a multi-business combo, but I'd say it's not a guarantee by any means.

It is likely, however, to have some of the other things you dislike about the direction the modular line has been going, such as a smaller height (compared to GG, TH, etc.), a story, and a more detailed interior. I like those--I feel like  detailed interiors improve the look even when viewing from outside; it adds to the feel of something being "real" when we can catch glimpses of furniture, rugs, etc., through windows, but it's understandable why some don't.

I never said I do not like detailed interiors, but they aren't as important to me as a good build.  However, there are many cool things about a detailed interior, I enjoyed the details on the PR a lot to be honest and I will agree that the height seems to be getting smaller as a trend, but I am hopeful that will not be permanent.  I would hope the PR is the smallest height we go to anymore, but the real key is just to make a good solid building, outside first to me, but then inside as well.  You are right though, I do not care for the multi business model, I think the bank could have been made way better with the exclusion of the laundry.

I would guess a lot of us, not sure but going to say 65%, usually build it, then just put it up for display and maybe will rearrange once in a while.  Personally I love the Haunted House and I know a few folks were able to make that more modular and fit it into their block, I have mine sitting to the side a bit and rotate that a bit, especially this time of year.  In fact, I would love for Lego to do a Haunted line similar to the Christmas/Holiday line.  I know they did Monster Fighters but that was also based around a theme story, I would like to do more of the whole Haunted theme, throw in mini modular etc.  Guess you could MOD the Scooby Doo line a bit that way as well.

In the end, Lego will always give a product for us, some may like that particular build, some may not.  I await the next one just like everyone else.

I have heard (third hand, originally from someone who claims to have seen the new lineup), that it will be a bakery + dentists office. This was definitely about one of the Creator sets (the townhouse was also mentioned), but the implication was that this was the modular, specifically. No idea how legit it is, or if it would be one building with two functions (a la bank + laundromat), or two buildings (a la  Pet Shop).

No matter what it ends up being, I can't wait to see it.

The first of october would be a perfect day to release some information about the new modular as we all enter the weekend that day...so, lots of time and opportunity to share, like and dislike the first discriptions of the new modular..  I still stick to my Bakery, and ordered 7 Seagulls in advance, so they can eat the breadcrumbs, falling out of the delivery-van.....

Nesquik, i didn't get up last night to check if there was any news already...

Oops--I'm sorry, I didn't mean to misrepresent you. I guess that's what I get for going off of memory (from what must have been quite some time ago--a year, perhaps, or more?). Sorry about that!

I agree that it would be nice to return to slightly higher buildings. I've appreciated the smaller ones--they create a nice varied skyline, and my two-story creations don't look quite so out of place when there's a wider variation of building sizes. But since the DO, the BB, and the PS are the only ones I have, I'm hoping that the variety can be improved in an upwards way. Similarly, the size/width variation that the multi-business model can give is something I enjoy, particularly when it makes my display feel more "real." Take the laundromat, for example. I will admit that it does diminish the grandeur of the bank. But I like how it makes it appear as though the bank has expanded, buying the room above the laundry and connecting it to the rest of the bank for use as the president's office. It's certainly a trade-off, though, and there are no two ways about that.

Anyway, sorry again for misrepresenting you. I look forward to the reveal of the new modular--and to hearing your thoughts on it!

oh it's all good, I will admit to the interiors being my last item of desire, but I do like a good interior, I love when they put bathrooms in, cause our minifigures certainly need to use them...that's what kills me about shows and movies, they never show that stuff, which is ok, but you have a grand movie where the actors do something for hours on end and never use the facilities?  Unrealistic...so before I get too off tangent, I would like to take a lot of the suggestions from our fellow members on this thread and see them become reality.

Bakery, Hospital, Museum, city parks, I picture the whole Lego movie set up in my basement of the modular with streets and parks and all that...going to have to get a bigger basement though.  The bank is actually fantastic in my opinion, just wanted it to be bigger and the laundry seems to have gotten in the way of that.  I would rather have a modular bank and then a modular laundry, and the laundry could combo with a tailor shop and then apartments above.

Hoping someone pops in a rumor today that is solid.

Wasn't the building portion of the Market Street meant to be a bakery? At the very least it seemed implied to be what with the croissant on the sign outside. I don't know if Lego would be interested in repeating that even if its predecessor is sort of the red-headed stepchild of modular buildings.

Good point, but I would have to wonder how many market street sets were purchased amongst the large populace that now collects the modular line.  I am guessing that even those who have it (not me unfortunately) would still pick up a new bakery.  So if not bakery then what would be your desire?  I still like the hospital idea, the museum idea, library would be cool, but the books would be interesting, I picture in my mind an open library to the third floor with the ladders and circular stairways...but again the books, I can't see TLG putting lots of individual ones in there.  We do have food places already so maybe not the bakery, we do need more living quarters for the people, have a lot of businesses.  I like the Pet Shop idea with two sides as well.
