I bought the two Saw Gurrera episodes on iTunes and watched them last night. A few thoughts:

  • The animation was well done. I know some people claim Rebels has a cheaper animation to it than the Clone Wars; but I couldn't see it here. Good facial expressions, Sabine's armor didn't bend around like it often does as much, and the shots of the relay station were very retro. The simple cloud atmospheric attempts reminded me of something ILM might have done for the original Trilogy, and it looked good.
  • With that said though, one location came off as surprisingly flat, Yavin IV. I think I might be a bit spoiled from its depiction in Rogue One... but the cartoon version wasn't as rich feeling.
  • Speaking of Yavin and the Rebels, great to see Forrest Whitaker and Genevieve O'Rilley providing their voice talents to the show. But the fact Bail Organa is voiced by the same actor as Hermes from Futurama sticks out like a sore thumb when given speaking roles in-between the film actors. Wish they had Jimmy Smitts on board just for that brief line.
  • Ezra's Commander Brohm Titus impression was stupid. And his stupidity caused them to be nearly killed if it wasn't for Deus-Ex-Gurrera showing up when he did.
  • Two-Tubes being shown as Saw's accomplice was a great Rogue One connection, but I wish his lines were subtitled or we had a few other Partisan Rebels who spoke in English. It was a bit strange seeing all of Saw's words being answered by a character who sounds like gibberish.
  • Isn't the Kyber Crystal the same model from The Clone War's canceled Utapau arc?
  • The prisoners... Yeah the prisoners were my least favorite part of the episode arc. I get it, they wanted to show us how Saw is willing to sacrifice innocent people's lives if it furthers his goals. I get they wanted to show how the Rebel Alliance's commitment to fair fighting and helping civilians, succeeds in drawing people to the cause while Saw's method alienates his supporters. But, the prisoners especially that green guy said to much and did to little for me. Kind of annoying watching them being saved and constantly complaining about their rescue.
  • Also, is that what a Death Trooper sounds like when his voice modulator is turned down a bit so non-Death Troopers can understand them? Please no, that voice was a bit weird. I was expecting them to sound more like Master Chief and less like "British stage director who invited the cast to tea" type of voice. At least we finally got some extended scenes with Death Troopers in a firefight, something sorely missing from Rogue One and last season of Rebels.
  • Where's Thrawn??

Overall, I enjoyed the episodes. It was good; but it wasn't great. The pacing was a bit slow, and a few nitpicks dragged it down. Still I enjoyed a look into the relationship between the Rebels and Saw; and liked how it tied into Rogue One.

EDIT: Once again Alex on Star Wars: Explained does a pretty good review of the episodes, summing up all the best and worst aspects of it:

Its opinions time!

Spoiler

I really like that season 4 is doing bigger multiple episode arcs, it seem they might be lothal for a while I'm not sure how I feel about that but so far so good. I like Sabine;s new design ( I know that its a pipe dream but A Lego one with helmet would be awesome). I liked seeing the tanks too and the season one callbacks. The Baron wasn't actually very nasty to Ezra as a bar keep, I had noticed that Ezra hadn't paid but I didn't expect it to be a plot point but it worked well. Now about the Lothwolf in the room, i really liked how the lothcats behaved in this episode, but I was a little disappointed when wolfie spoke but If he/she stays a wolf of few words it would be okay and maybe even a little rad. I liked Thrawn insulting Ezra but his pistol shots at the defender seems out of character, I known its a reference but still.I seem to have forgoten what else I had to say and seem to be starting to many sentences with 'I liked' so I'll end this here.

A couple of thoughts:

Spoiler

I was initially a little sceptical when I found out Lothal was making yet another appearance, but I like how war torn it has become in contrast to when we saw it in Season 1. The fiery, exterior surface of the planet is great and reminds me of Gallifrey during the Time War in Doctor Who. It really gives the sense the Empire have done some long lasting damage that the population isn't going to forget any time soon, even if Lothal is saved by the Rebels.

Thrawn seems to be a lot more recessive in this series, doing his usual "let the Rebels escape, I have a better idea" not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Rukh should (hopefully!) be turning up soon which should prompt some more Thrawn heavy episodes. I loved the way Ezra just casually waved at Thrawn and Pryce though

Its cool to see Kallus working along side the Ghost crew and I like the little remarks made about his Imperial past. That said, I do hope him and Rex make more larger appearances in the episodes. It would've been a shame to have made it through the whole of Season 3 only to have him as the "wait with the ship" guy. And if anything it would make more sense for Kallus to be alongside the Crew infiltrating bases since he knows how the Impreials work. Overall though a good episode.

Oh and where's AP-5  we need you and your singing!

The occupation on lothal episode was the best so far this season, by a wide margin.  Flight of the Defender was okay, and VERY silly at some times ( Looking at you Thrawn ).

I liked the 6th installment so far in the series (can't believe we are there already).

Can't wait to see what the next ones will bring. I hope they stay true to their word regarding Lothal.

No, they don't kill civilians, only imperial forces. And that is only when the stakes are high - in combat they always shoot to stun and hit to knock-out. (It's weird to see jedi using lightsabres to merely block blaster shots after years of watching them slice through droids)

That is in contrast to the empire who are willing to kill civilians, and Saw Guerilla who doesn't care who dies anymore, friend or foe.

Spoiler

I quite enjoyed the latest two episodes. Kindred had a very mystical feel to it. I'll admit, I was a little let down at Rukh, he started the episode so well, building up to him possibly capturing at least one of the characters, but then the Rebels just escaped again. Although based off the trailers he does seem to have a role in capturing Hera next episode so there's hope  I loved the RotJ vibes during the speeder chase in the rocky mountains.

Crawler Commanders was a fun episode, there were a lot of humorous moments, especially Ezra's impression of the Pilot , and is it just me or did they play the same music when Indy was fighting the German mechanic in Raiders when Zeb was fighting the guard?

I too was getting flashbacks to Indy's fight with the German mechanic from Raiders during that scene. Glad I wasn't the only one who seemingly caught that!

These two episodes were OK, I feel the season should have started with this arch instead of the Mandalorians. It feels like it is actually building up to something.

Can't wait for more.

The title of todays midseason finale, episode, was "Rebel assault", obviously a homage to the game with the same name from 1993. I liked that game alot, it was one of the first star wars games that I got after buying a pc (that and Jedi Outcast), so I had high hopes for this episode to be better than what we got untill now, since it featured my favorite rebel starfighter, the x-wing. It was an okay episode, the space battle was to short for my taste and the rest is spoiler.

Spoiler

I loved the x-wings even if the spacebattle didnt last as long as I expected. I was really annoyed how Hera could bring down a frigate and a stardestroyer at the same time, but at least it wasnt with a comunicator or space-whales. And dont get me started on that mid-space breaking with her x-wing, turning and than shooting at the tie-defender, that seemed like something a kid would play at home, but okay its star wars and physics dont really apply to that galaxy the same way as we know.

The ground-assault team with Kannan and the others bringing down a line of defense towers with Sabines little bombs, I tought those things would be sturdier, and why werent they protected by tanks or troops, or both for that matter, since Thrawn is such a great strategist and all, I really get the feeling that his whole strategy relies on dumb luck from his side, he seems more like a gambler. But I shouldnt be so harsh on him since he finaly had a great idea on hiding another tie-fighter squadron in the clouds, that could take down the rebells "fleet", so its one point for him.

Yet I am still confused with the whole attack, the rebels send a small squadron of fighters to somehow liberate a whole planet from one of the most powerfull forces in their galaxy, or were they just planning to destroy the factories on the planet, what good would that do, there could be hundreds of those on Lothal. I get that Dave Filloni somehow wants big fights and all, but rebels vs. the empire is not the same as the clone wars. The republic and the seperatists had thousands of ships and forces at their disposal, but it would be unrealistic to assume that the rebels could defeat the empire and free a planet, they dont have the resources, its just not plausible.

I might be crazy here, but did anyone else notice that Zeb kept the lightwhip of the guard in Crawler Commanders? Haven't seen Rebel Assault yet so I don't know if it's confirmed, but I think I saw him carrying it when the camera cut to him during one of his lines of dialogue.

I find myself rooting for everything that isn't the main cast of protagonists in this show. Be it Empire or Rebels, I just can't root for those characters, except maybe Kanan? I mean he's blind and his love interest is barely interested in him; Hera is too busy being smug and blowing shit up in ways that leaves me with a couple more question marks each time. Poor guy. Talk about that, 4 season and I can barely give a crap about these guys.

I'm going on a limb here and predict how the series will end;

- Crew immedietaly plans to rescue Hera but it gets twarted by Thrawn; they are forced to leave Lothal via a crappy ship that will get through an Imperial blockade. Kanan will maybe die in the process of saving Hera.

- Full on filler episodes between the premiere and the finale. Let's cram those star wars references for the old fans despite the fact the writting clearly appeals to kids only.

- The finale with somewhat combine Mandalorians, Rebels and magic megablocks wolves. The TIE defender factory is gonna get destroyed. If Kanan isnt already dead he'll die here. Brief Palpatine cameo stripping Thrawn of his rank, cue-in a Bendu megablocks appearance.

Hera will stay in the Rebellion as General Smug. She has forgotten about Kanan and is now dating General Dodonna.

Ezra will drop his Jedi abilities and start using death sticks to forget his completly irrelevant arc as a dark jedi and the morality questions the show forgot about. He's now roaming the unknown regions with Boba Fett and Thrawn until Disney needs them for cameos.

Sabine was awarded the ''Star of Humanity'' achievement by all the known systems for her ridiculous amount of skills ranging from weapon of mass destruction desginer, artist and art critic, explosive expert, marksman, CQC specialist, covert ops specialist, ace pilot, athlete, mechanician, light saber user, mandalorian martial artist and known to speak droid.

Zeb slowly sunk into alcoolism wishing Lucas had approved McQuarrie's first desgin for Chewbacca. He was supposed to appear for a small cameo in the cantina scene for the 2018 Han Solo movie but it got scrapped because of the re-shoots.

Chopper resorted to petty robbery when Hera could finally buy a replacement astromech and did not have to deal with his crappy attitude. Was apparantly sighted at the Uncle Owen farm on Tattoine looting from the recently burned houses and getting deals with the local Tuskens to mug locals.

Well, RetroInferno, your comment is a little harsh towards the show, but to be honest, I think you are pretty spot on with everything you say. Through the last seasons I found out, that the main cast, became as annoying as heck to me, especially Hera and Sabine, I will not go in to details, as you have allready summed it up very accurately. I have to agree about Kanan, he is the only one that I am rooting for but he will probably meet a verry bitter end, as for Ezra... I could not care less.

I will still watch the show, but I think it is mostly because of couriosity or hope, maybe they can still save it. Rebellions are build on hope, are they not?

I feel like I respectfully disagree with a lot of the past few posts made here. Now admittedly, I haven't been able to watch every single episode of Rebels like many of the people here; but I try and keep up with the show and hope to have it collected on DVD in its entirety someday. Other then that obnoxious hippie space whale episode, I have really enjoyed every other episode of Rebels I have watched.

Is it a perfect show? No. In my opinion it is overly focused on showing Ezra's point of view, hence why the rare episodes such as Through Imperial Eyes gathered a lot of attention. The Clone Wars did very well in showing the happenings of side characters, while Rebels is very focused on the Ghost crew. With that said though, I don't find fault in the charactarization of the Ghost crew like many do. Is Ezra silly? Well yeah, but he is still 17 or so even in the show's current timeline and kids that age IRL tend to act kind of like Ezra does. Hera, Kanan and Chopper in my opinion are spot on characterization we needed for the story of how the Rebellion formed; and frankly everything they have done is ten times better then the nonsensical formation of the Rebels that The Force Unleashed and its sequel tried to push on us back in the old EU. What would you rather have, a broken Jedi Padawan and his co-worker/sometimes girlfriend struggling for years to help set up a Rebellion; or one over powered dark apprentice ripping Star Destroyers out of the air then kicking Darth Vader's butt before exploding into a fireball, then getting cloned like a dozen times all in the span of like a month? Sorry, in terms of overall plot and story, Rebels is telling the tale far far better.

And to be honest... I kind of like what I have seen of Rebels more than The Clone Wars. Yes Clone Wars handled its dark episodes very well and fans venerate those for a good reason. Yet Clone Wars was also responsible for R2 and 3PO going on Gulliver's Travels, Jar Jar Binks french kissing some pink alien chick with Mace Windu standing by in disgust, and some very cringe worthy series premier movie which sits as the worst theatrical Star Wars release on Rotten Tomatoes. Watching Clone Wars in its entirety was a very much hit and miss experience like Rebels, and when Rebels does get good it compares to the good Clone Wars did. I have to admit bias though, I prefer the OT era more than the PT... so Rebels hits all these sweet nostalgic feelings for me.

So yeah. That is my rant.

@Daimar, One more thing. First off, I had Rebel Assault on a computer when I was a kid. Hardly worked, but I do remember it. Second... Star Wars space battles actually have always been full of b.s. physics. In space with no air or gravity, why would spaceships be banking and speeding up as if there was air? As I mentioned, I have yet to see the Rebel's episode from last night... but from how you described it the thought of Hera doing a 180 in her X-Wing in the middle of space while still traveling forward is actually THE MOST REALISTIC SPACE COMBAT THING STAR WARS HAS EVER DONE!!! I am not joking, with no gravity or air friction, any vehicle in space should make sharp turns on a dime without banking or anything. It happens in real life anytime they try and dock something to the ISS as they might give the object a 360 spin just to inspect it before it docks to the station. The only reason it seems off is because the rest of Star Wars ignores space physics for 99% of the time, so as soon as something realistic happens it looks jarring in comparison. EDIT: I just saw a clip of the move online. The unrealistic part is how the ship stops on a dime before making its 180 turn. However considering that Star Wars has shown starfighters stopping on a dime before... the rest of the move is fairly realistic.

This last episode felt rushed to me.Why didn't they explain the x-wings or Hera's promotion?
It wasn't good but it wasn't bad either.
Some things felt very convenient.

I thought the episode was good, not great, but not terrible either. The first 10 or so mi utes were amazing, the X wings, the good old "Lock S foils in attack position" command! I really liked Mart in this episode, he wasn't nearly as annoying or arrogant as his last appearance.

Mid season finale? That sucks. When is the next episode?

Crazy, only a few weeks ago Hera finally bought herself a new outfit. Here she is with #3! Who knew her wardrobe was so huge?

The second half of season three started on january 7th, according to the rebels wikia, could be the same thing for 2018 maybe the 8th or 15th january? They will probably drop a trailer for it in december, so we will see.

I think you are right, I just saw the new star wars TLJ spot 6, and there you can see Poe Dameron doing a similar move to what Hera was doing in the latest Rebels episode, with the turning and breaking... man I am really bad at describing things with words. As you said, there are a lot of other references in the previous movies and media where somone made the same/similar manouver, I just havent noticed them until now.

You are usually assigned a generalship the moment you join the Rebellion - hence General Solo, General Calrissian etc

If Jar Jar had joined the Rebellion he would have gone straight to Admiral/Field Marshall as he was already a general in the Gungan army.

and in the Republic you are a general if you're a jedi. Since she wears Kanan's pants... (plus she has a clone captain as a subordinate) haha

I really wouldn't hype myself up for an Emperor battle of whatever, it's probably a short dream or illusion a la Darth Vader cavern on Dagobah.
