ZORK64 Posted December 26, 2012 I'm sorry for the delay of this review. I wanted to write it earlier, but you know, christmas and stuff. I was really looking forward to get Ogrum. But not because of his design or his parts, but simply because of his colours. Alongside with a few pieces of brown, Ogrum also comes with dark green shells - two colours which were absent from LEGO's constractions themes for a long time (especially brown). But how much benefits this guy from the new colours? Let's find out. Set name: Ogrum Set Number: 44007 Price: 12.99 Euro Pieces: 60 Year of release: Late 2012/Early 2013 Size class: Deluxe set (which means it's a medium set) The bag Ogrum run's amok in the facility, surrounded by various brain slugs. Interestingly enough, the front of his bag doesn't feature any ad for the video game. The back of his bag does show an ad (and also informs you about the hero core with 600 points). It also shows the "swinging mace action!" of Ogrum, and if you happen to own Breez, you'll be someday (if LEGO puts the instructions online) able to build that fantastic looking combiner. Instead of a flip-up visor, he comes with a brain slug. Inside the bag Ogrum comes with 60 parts - or did I make a mistake while counting? Given that Breez got 53 parts, I get the feeling he's a bit overpriced. As I said earlier, Ogrum got dark green and brown, and there's also some gunmetal (like that superhero-chest-thingy - I guess we hadn't that in gunmetal before). Oh, he also comes with one of the new heads! New and interesting parts The brain slug, which is made from a rubbery plastic. A very large, nice looking piece with a nice brain design. The red part is a more solid plastic with a cross axle. Another shot of the brain design. Ogrum's face, which also has some blains. It looks very ogre-like, somewhere between your generic fantasy orc and some sort of demon from Japanese folklore (okay, the latter maybe not so much). It's back. You see, it connects the same way as a Mistika kanohi. I'm very sure that these pieces aren't new. Ogrum got 2 brown and 3 dark green ones. Building the bad guy Just like Breez, you put a brown piece on Ogrum's back, although a bit lower, at heigh of his hips. Then he gets limbs and feet. Then you put leg and body armour on him. Then he gets his head. Instead of completing it though, we then start to build the weapon in his left hand... ...and give him his hands. Then there comes the brain slug. The end of the tail connects to the brown piece you put on him at first. Then we complete Ogrum's head with the mask and a pair of tusks. He looks already quite menacing. And to make sure that he doesn't just look menacing, he now gets his weapons. First his vine hand... ...then the mace. The build of the mace is quite simple. Then you attach it to the stick in his left hand, give him shoulder armour and then we got... The finished set So yeah, this is Ogrum, your average orc-like monster with a mace. I like his colourscheme with the green skin and the brown and gunmetal clothing/armour. His weapon looks also very brutal and fits him well. However, I'm not really a fan of the brain slug. Granted, it gives him those nice red eyes, but it also results in a rather empty back and also limits the poseability of his neck joint. (however, you can of course unplug the spine and just give him back armour) Playability Aside from the issue with his neck, Ogrum is still very poseable (though his shoulders are a bit restricted because of the armour there), and his mace brings also some extra fun. You can use it to crush the cores of those weak heroes! But since we know how tough Breez is, it's more likely that she frees Ogrum from the parasite! If you flip the head upward and put Ogrum's face on it, he looks a bit empty though. I guess his mask works better with the older, wider heads (like the Toa metru ones, though I haven't tried that yet). Final thoughts Back then in my review for Breez, I suspected Ogrum to be the better green set of this wave. After owning and comparing Breez and Ogrum, I'd say it's more or less a draw between the two. I liked Breez' dynamic design, and I like Ogrum's bulky look, and both of them come with nice pieces (Breez got the neat helmet, the visor and the new armour, Ogrum comes with a slug, his mask and interesting colours). So it's really up to you which set is the better one. (but to be honest, I'd recommend you to get both of them) He's also an exellent addition to any orc army you might want to build. Zachattacx Posted December 26, 2012 Great Review,As much as I hated this guy originally he grew on me and your review helps the vines grow on me. Though his face does go a lot further than normal.
xxlrocka Posted December 26, 2012 I must say, Ogrum looks very... plant-like. But that's the theme of Ogrum. He/she is a walking, talking, brain-controlled plant creature. I think the Brain Attack wave is the second best wave, with Breakout in first place. Back onto the topic of Ogrum, he/she is very different from Breez, whilst looking somewhat similar as well. Basically, the bulk of Ogrum makes him/her a very different character, and the overall design makes that clearer to see, but the colours and some other things make Ogrum a feminine figure, similar to Breez. Oh, and the brain-controlling parasite looks good, if you ask me. Might be the best out of the Brain Aliens From Outer Space.
Front Posted December 26, 2012 (edited) 2 spikes and chest cover in dark metallic. Chest-shell and 3M shells in dark green. Large hands and feet in brown. All these new colours on parts. Perhaps my favorite set Jan-2013, despite lacking the new-colored translucent claw clip-ons that other villains have. Cirkit Posted December 26, 2012 Lots of new colours, that face, the brain, and those delishous translucent parts.. definitely a must-have for me. I agree with Front about the claws, but one could just take a spare Scarox and add those trans mandibles on somehow..
DraikNova Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) Well, he seems nice enough. Lots of newly recolored parts and a rather interesting head. Edited December 27, 2012 by DraikNova
dviddy Posted December 27, 2012 I really like this guy, he's a lot less boring in person than he looked in pictures, and his colouring is actually fantastically done. This is the set I'm working on for my BZP review too.
Ceroknight Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) Thank you for the review! Wow he looks awesome! I haven't been really following the 2013 discussions, but is the worm thing basically like the Kraatas from the Rahkshi? King Aragorn Posted December 27, 2012 The picture with Troll from LOTR is great! Looks like a family portrait!
Aanchir Posted December 27, 2012 Wow, the review really made this set look even more awesome. I suppose part of that is from seeing how solid-looking it is even from angles other than front view. The lack of back armor is an issue, but a minor one IMO (and one that shouldn't be too difficult to remedy). The brain slug looks incredible, as does the mask. The only major fault I see in this set is that only one of his hands has "fingers"-- fingers on the other one would have made the Y-joint holding the mace stand out a lot less. Overall, it says a lot that despite his lack of a function this remains one of the best-looking villain sets this wave. While I'm sure many people will be happy with the re-introduction of functions, the way it detracts from Scarox's build is extremely unfortunate, and shows that set design is always a balance between what you want to incorporate in a set and what has to be cut out to keep it from bumping up the price point. Sir Walter Maugham Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) Great review! He looks much better out of the box then he does on the art work. He looks nice and bulky. And I welcome those clawed Piraka feet in any new color. I love those pieces. But his color scheme could be a bit more coherent. The trans-green on his upper arms ad thighs would look much better if they were dark green in my opinion. And his head looks incredibly empty without the brain slug too. (But, then again he is an ogre ) Edited December 27, 2012 by Sir Walter Maugham
