Inappropriate ads

I use Firefox as well, and I use a great addon called "Adblock Plus". I can't help with you with this problem, but I recommend that you find it and install it to prevent that from happening again.

Note sure if this will be a problem, but I just wanted to point out that this has happened to me me twice now, and is still a problem.

AdBlock plus? Maybe I'll try that. but still, just putting that out there.

There seems to be a large ad box now on the left side of the frontpage. Is this supposed to be just for logged out viewers and somehow is now showing for logged-in users, or is it meant for everyone? It seems to have switched places from its old position to where the "navigation" menu once was, and has significantly increased in size (And is somewhat squishing the rest of the page)

I noticed this as well. :sceptic:

It's certainly a bit annoying, since it smashes the FP posts. Let's see what the Admins say. :classic:

Blame me.

I'm just doing some experimentations. Currently the frontpage ad makes up a small part of the site revenue... which means I was considering removing it. BUT that was mostly because the ad size was one of the older formats that not many people make ads for and if we could improve our revenue by using the same amount of screen space I figured "why not". Do note that the front page is much the same as before, it's just that there's less on the right, more on the left. (I chose the left as with what was there it could use the space more effectively.) This is not a case of sacrificing content for adverts.

Personally I think it's not a big deal. The frontpage is visited once and then you go elsewhere. If EB was to expand our ad coverage I'd go for the frontpage; it's far less annoying. It was with great reluctance that I was for the addition of ads at the bottom of each page, but it's been accepted for the most part. I'd hate for use to do the ad-in-the-middle-of-topics that many forums do, and that's why I'm experimenting. Quite simply it's only possible to do such experimentations on a real live site, so that's what I'm doing.

To me it's not too bad for screen sizes over 1024.

1024.gif 1024

1280.gif 1280

I did test all resolutions while setting this up, and I made it work well for 1280 and OK at 1024. To be honest I find sites designed for 1024 really annoying, and personally I consider any monitor less than 1280 unusable... (My screens are 1920x1080.)

Don't worry; I'll probably restore it to the old way in a day or two.

Even so, since the issue has been raised, please feel free everyone to share your thoughts on advertising on EB.

Here are my thoughts, and I really hope everyone listens to what I have to say.

Nothing is free on the internet. Most users log into their favorite website or forum and it's always there day or night for their enjoyment. The thing is websites cost money, and so do forums, every thread and every post takes bandwidth and that costs money. Funding a website alone only works for so long, especially when the website is growing as fast as EB.

The frontpage is great, it highlights star MOC's and news, but honestly how long do you spend on the frontpage as part of your EB experience. I highly doubt it's much more than 5%. Which is why this is a great place to have a large ad that brings in valuable income to the site. If you love Eurobricks you should be able to handle an ad which you can choose to ignore, the view what you want, click a link and be brought into the forum where most your time is spent.

I've been on many forums and only one has not had ad's, but he had a premium member option where you paid a yearly fee for certain perks, which I know helped significantly since I was on his staff for many years.

Bottom line, an ad is a very minor part of most people visiting EB, but it's a HUGE asset for the staff to keep offering this great place for free.

And please note I am not on the staff nor was this encouraged by any staff member, I just have been around forums a long time and these are my thoughts and experiences with them.

My thoughts are exactly what Big Cam said, besides there's also ad-block for people with certain browsers.

But Supporting Eurobricks is whats important.

I think it's less the size and more the sides being flipped that people are noticing. The vital information on the page is still presented just as well as ever and I don't see this as a big deal.

Oh, and I'm staff but didn't pay attention to the discussion prior to the test, so I wasn't expecting it either, and initially I thought, "huh?" and then I thought "cool, everything is still there and almost more readable now (not sure why)", so it doesn't bother me and will not effect my healthy EB salary either way.

I think that on the right hand side, where it is now for me it seems, it's not a big deal and certainly a good idea if it helps fund the continuation of the site. On the left however, it naturally falls into the place your eyes start scanning the page from, which magnifys the impact significantly as you 'see' it before you notice any of the real content.

I don't mind it either, as long as it helps Eurobricks. Just one idea: I think the frontpage would look better with only two columns, one text block and one sidebar. Putting the left bars also on the right would be better now.

The only problem I have with it is that it seems that the recommended sites and such have swapped sides, making it feel weird to be back on the front page. But I don't spend that much time there anyways.

Doesn't seem like much of a problem to me.

Hi there,

So how to start this? Well, lets put it this way: I do see the need for advertisment in order to earn the dollars/euros/pounds/kronas or whatever to keep this page running. I also understand that advertising is regionalized, so I guess that in Germany I see different advertisement than in the US or Britain, depending on your IP adress.

However, today I saw an advertising that I certainly would not like to see on this page and I wonder whether you, the administratos, actually have an idea of what is being advertised in all the countries?

Personally, I'd rather donate the one or the other Euro to keep this site running instead of having to read advertisement for the "Bild" tabloid, a "newspaper" compareable to the Sun in Britain or US Today in the US.

So my question is, do you really think it is neccesary to accept the advertisment from all the companies that would like to put their banners here? "Bild" is xenophobic, die-heart conservative, nationalistic and at times even racist. It's defenitely not something that I could possibly associate with this international community that is build on mutual understanding and to me, so far, a really cool way to transcend national idiologies through this amazing hobby that we all share.

hope you don't mind this comment

cheers, kabel

Heh. When I started reading your post, I thought you had encountered an ad for pornographic material or the likes... but a newspaper? Honestly, I think you're exaggerating a great deal. Agree with the political stance and employed morale of a newspaper or not; it can hardly be described as 'offensive'. It's just a newspaper, albeit of the tabloid kind. Try to ignore it. :classic:

I guess I'm not a target aduience for web advertising, because I usually don't even see it or pay any attention to it.

The one thing I did notice on another forum was targeted Amazon advertising, then I learned to avoid it I just make sure I sign out of Amazon.

Eurobriks needs to make money somehow, I do hope their adds do payoff and help pay the bills.

Another forum I used to frequent had both paid and free service. For paid you got add free, for free you got adds, your choice.

As I said, I do understand that EB needs to make money, so I do not have a problem with it in general. All I'm asking is whether the people in charge of this know what sort of advertisement runs here. And seriously, the "Bild" tabloid simply does not fit the idea of this community. Furthermore, I'd even donate for EB if they asked for it, same like I also donate for Wikipedia.

Install and adblocker in your browser. Why this ISN'T default in a browser I don't understand? Who the hell wants to see ads??

I'd rather have a paid membership, but that's another discussion

So... I'm a user of Adblock, but I have it disabled on Eurobricks, because Eurobricks obviously makes it's money (to pay for the servers and stuff, no one is getting rich through Eurobricks, probably) through advertisements. Eurobricks' ads are pretty much not intrusive at all, so whoever else uses Adblock, I'd highly recommend you turn it off for Eurobricks. However. Just today I have had several instances of an ad making annoying, loud, noises, out of the blue, without me hovering over the add or something. Does Eurobricks get any way to choose ads, because ads like that ARE grounds for me to turn Adblock back on...

I like NO ads in my life, they're annoying crap. If EB needs money they know how to contact me

If you can fund us server wise with no strings attached for a full year please contact me. (Or any other of the admins.) That's where most of our money goes... If we didn't have bills to pay we wouldn't need ads.

PM sent...!
