With not much else to do, De'kra clicks, "I will repeat I attack, unless you have better idea." He takes aim with the explosive hand cannon again, hoping to score a hit this time.

Thalion repeats his action.

Note to QM: For auto-roll purpose, Thalion will do as Arthur suggested, attack the SIAB with ice from the back row until it is defeated, then do nothing in the back row. If a new spider is spawned, I'll update his actions.

"Yes, I'll deal with the spider. Once the barrel is destroyed, Thalion, just hang back and do nothing; De'kra, same goes for you with the spider, unless a new one is summoned. Barur, could you continue to attack the Barrel from the Front Row, please, unless someone drops below half health, in which case you should heal them." Arthur casts a Frailty Spell and an Ice Spell at the Bright Widow, Back Row.

"De'kra, you really deserve both of these venoms, but I'd like to keep one to myself. For...other...purposes." Imagine that venom somehow imbued into my staff... "You mentioned before being uncomfortable with bombs, so if it's alright with you I'd like to give your Dirt Bomb to Thalion and your Ice Bomb to Barur. I meant to give you the blunt dagger earlier, but apparently forgot--it's worth 5 Gold, and is better suited to you anyhow, even as weak as it is. IC: De'kra nodded and proceeded to give long overdue exposition.

"Remember Makuta I spoke of?" he began, "Before they came conquerors, they were a race of crafters and protectors, intend to guard we and make creatures to aid we. When they turn to evil, they did not forget those skills. One of Makuta used his knowledge f craft bio-mechanical life in order to make...evil."

"They were call...Visorak," he continued after a pause, "It mean "Stealers of Life," roughly. They were powerful...spiders, size of we mighty heroes. Each of them had powerful abilities and ways to hunt people, like mimicry of voices. But their main power was...it was horrible. They cocoon people and creatures, inncase them in sicky webs. As the captives lay in coma, Visorak...thrust their venomous spikes into them. Venom burns through body, twist and corrupt it. Limbs grow gangly and sharp, faces merge and helmets into freakish forms, hands become claws and powers Grench out of control. Worst of all, mind reverts to savagery. Infected can not think much beyond kill and eat, friendships dissolve, memories grow faint. And it get worst longer infect. We call them Hordika, "Half-Beasts."

"Visorak swarm over I world," he all but whispered, "[/i]They infect civilizations, drive races to extinction. They...I not like spiders, especially four legged ones.[/i]"

Arthur's eyes widened. "De'kra...this infection--could the infected spread it to other creatures, through bites or cuts? And did this venom happen to let off a smoky green gas?"

"Many years ago, at the height of the Bio Beast infestation, my ancestors used the remains of one of those creatures in a ritual to open a Gate to a different dimension, one full of bio-mechanical beings. We exchanged ideas and technology, but unfortunately that wasn't the only thing exchanged. Some creatures of that realm escaped through the unstable Dimension Door--in those days, my people did not have a permanent Gate that could be fortified--and multipied within the forests to our west. One of those was called Khaggra--Kagarikr--anyway, our people called them Kah'grak'tharachna, a corruption of their original pronunciation combined with my people's word for 'spider.' The creature sounds somewhat similar to the ones you described. My grandfather and great grandfather once managed to hunt and kill one of these beasts, and study of its remains was the basis for our fixed Gate technology."

"Anyway...I ask because we never did learn the origin of the Bio Beasts--they appeared before my people opened our Dimension Door to the other world, and according to the Archives the people of that realm denied all knowledge--they were perplexed as we were by the creatures. I...my friends and I discovered a vial of green gas that, when struck with the Staff of Chaos, produced a new Bio Beast. If this is the venom you described--if it is the source of the Bio Beasts--then it's possible that my people's use of the Gate is somehow producing them--and if that's the case, then I must warn them to stop using the Gate, no matter what the cost."

Arthur notices Filmore cowering back in the hallway. "Well, kid, I hope you've learned something from watching us fight. If you don't mind, I'd like that Telescope back, if you please." Arthur holds out his hand, but turns for a moment to address the rest of the party before returning his attention to the crewman. "Everyone else, let's have a look-see at what's inside those crates. GENTLY, and neatly--no need to make a mess."

IC: De'kra's eyes flashed briefly to a bright green as he clicked, "No, but I know of green mist. That sound like real form of Makuta. When they want to possess bodies, they leave their armor behind, and as mist they flow into people. They can farm this mass to create slug-like beasts call...Kraata. Which I...can...spawn..."

De'kra glanced down at his hands, and with a shudder he continued, "Um...We probably should not talk about this for now. Important thing is these Kraata can infect minds of I people, make them evil. Likewise each one has special power, like poison or adaptability. And mist, which is call Antidermis, can be absorb into people to make them vulnerable to mind control. At least that what it did on I people, but we are bio-mechanical synthetic forms of life and you...aren't. I...I will try to track him down now."

De'kra spots several almost imperceptible footprints in the thin layer of dust on the ground, and handprints on parts of the ladder leading up to the galley. The hatch, however, is closed, and evidently locked from above. Raised voices are audible as well.

De'kra begins the search of all the crates. The first few include, as maintained by Illdria, food and other basic supplies. Arthur, meanwhile, eavesdrops.

Before Arthur can hear any more, the hatch flies open, and Knife-Tongue drops down the ladder, followed by the rest of the crew, including Filmore.

"Alright. So here it is. You claim to be working for the Bonapartes for - yet another - check on the cargo, possibly because they think we might be smuggling something dangerous. Filmore here claims he was bribed to get a crate past us onto the ship - but also claims it's a crate our employers wanted on our ship anyway. He's also gotten the idea that the Ji Pei are out to destroy Eubric, or...something or other. Frankly, I don't know what those people get up to, but I know the Bonapartes don't like them. These stories conflict quite brilliantly. The Bonapartes are the ones that want this...Ji Pei thing, and the Operire are the ones that want it out of Eubric and away from its owners, despite the fact that they inexplicably have ahold of it right now? This, above all else, is what makes me quite sure at least one of you bastards is lying to the majority of my crew. I'd very much like to know which one, before I take action."

Filmore edges towards some of the crates, glancing between Illdria and the heroes. Knife-Tongue, Jules, and Melvin frown and otherwise look confused, or are trying to untangle this mess of logic. The tension is so thick, you wouldn't even be able to cut it with a knife. What will the party do?

"Can't speak for Filmore, but seeing as the rest of you seem a decent bunch, I'll explain a few things for you...just as soon as Filmore's gone. I don't trust him--he smuggled cargo onboard without the consent of his extremely fair and reasonable captain, knowing that you wouldn't approve of the shipment, and besides, I loaned him my Telescope and he scarpered without giving it back. I'd actually like that back now. Even if his intentions were innocent, someone told him to smuggle this aboard, and I definitely don't trust them." Arthur crosses his arms and refuses to speak until Filmore is out of earshot, his posture indicating to the rest of the party to do the same.

Illdria swipes the Telescope from Filmore's hands and tosses it to Arthur.

"Do you think I trust either of you? Nobody's hiding a damn thing anymore, I want both of you to come out with it now. As far as I'm concerned, this crate is part of my cargo right now."

"All right, you want the truth? Here it is:"

"I'm a Hero, a Sorcerer of Heroica. I know De'kra here is as well, can't honestly speak for the others, though I daresay they are the type to belong to Heroica rather than some other group. We were hired by someone who wished to remain anonymous--you'll understand if I don't drop the name, it's bad for business to go against one's employer's orders--who claimed to be working on behalf of an Avina Truenall, a wealthy Eubrican merchant. It seems Miss Truenall ordered some sort of mechanical guard--our employer didn't say what for. Anyway, her shipment went missing, ship and all, in transit from factory to customer, so our employer hired us to investigate. We persuaded the harbormaster to give us a look at the records, and found that the Bonapartes had stolen the merchandise and bribed your crewman to ship it away."

"Now, the cargo IS of Ji Pei manufacture, if the harbormaster's records are correct, but I have no other idea why your crewman is so worked up about that; if everyday alchemists and apothecaries are allowed to carry the components needed to recreate the Gray Plague, I don't see why the Ji Pei shouldn't be allowed to sell their little tinker-toys to paying customers. One thing I WILL say is this: when we examined the harbormaster's records we found numerous cases where the Bonapartes had hijacked incoming shipments and later sent their contents off to random ports as 'Operire Goods.' I find it highly likely that the Bonapartes are using Operire as a means to send away stolen goods disguised as ordinary cargo; I just don't understand why they are going to such elaborate lengths to do this, rather than just confiscating the cargo publicly and legitimately and taking it to Fort Bonaparte, or else just turning the ships away and forcing them to return back to their original port. Either way, this thing is a lot bigger than either of us, and I'd just as soon get these goods--these stolen goods--back to the customer as soon as possible, and come back to this problem with reinforcements--or even just take this problem to the Veterans; after all, issues of this scale are just the sort of things suited for them to tackle."
