It think the XL or M motor will not be strong enough. Maybe when you would use a reduction 24 vs 8 gear, or even more..

The new servo motor turns approximately 90 degrees. When released returns to center.

Would this be a solution?

It will be available soon enough as it is in Lego stores in Germany now..

What? when will the servo motor hit german stores ?

Have you tried out your idea in the bricks? For steering, an M-motor geared 16:20 to the hockey spring works well.
