Help with identifying parts/sets!

Recommended Posts

I have no idea if this is in the right place, but im desperate. I want to give my son an old lego set that was one of my favorites, but im missing these two legos, i managed to find an old picture of it, but i have no idea the names. The first is a yellow square, golden almost with a skull in the middle, the other is a triangular iridescent green brick, like a jewel, can someone help, or at least give me the names/sets these belonged too? thank you all so much!post-113017-0-06516900-1386651694_thumb.jpg

You might be better off describing the set to us, given it was one of your favourites I assume you have some memory of what it was. Those pics aren't that helpful. A quick search of "skull" on bricklink didn't come up with anything that was an obvious match.

Even a current photo of the pieces you have, particularly those with any decoration or minifigs would be a great help.

Sounds like something from the adventurers desert series. Here's a list...

http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?theme=Adventurers&subtheme=Desert

Check them out and I reckon you'll come up with the one. There is also a more recent similar series Pharaoh's Quest which isn't too expensive for a series that is now finished if that's something else you'd like to get your son.

The first is this piece. Hewman was close, it is from the Adventurers line of Jungle sets. The other one is too blurry for me to figure out, but this maybe it, if it's a jewel. Check here for other possibilities in minifig utensils. Hope this is helps :classic:

So after my "dark ages" ended by buying a small lego space rover set, and about a year of buying kits for myself (technic, city and creator) my desire to free build was fired by a couple of brickjournals and a book appearing at Christmas.

I decided to browse ebay for some bulk lego job lots (as my old lego is built up into the sets) to get some in and spotted this lot which I naturally snapped up with a minimum of thinking;

Now, having paid for it and thought about it a little I'm slightly worried; particularly by the ships hull that the seller has their hand on above as I can't recognise it as a lego hull.

So, my question is, have I lucked out on an incredibly rare piece (fat chance!) or have I stupidly bought a load of megabloks...

Some of it is almost certainly Lego, the tail section of the coastguard helicopter for example. Pretty sure that boat hull, thus probably a proportion of the rest, is clone bricks though.

You'll get good at spotting non-LEGO pieces if you continue to browse eBay auctions. I buy a lot of lots and rarely are they completely "clean".

Looks like you have a pretty big lot there to sort through, which will give you plenty of practice!

Haha, that's very true. Hopefully the ship in this is a one off bought by a slightly misguided relative (apparently the lot is a child's Lego collection from when they were younger)

I'm no expert, however, I might be able to help. There's the rear tail of the latest City airplane (http://www.bricklink...asp?P=54094pb01), one of the current bike pieces (http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=52035), some rare red scaffolding pieces (http://www.bricklink...&colorID=5&in=A), parts of a number of Coast Guard sets, and the huge green piece is from a City hauler (http://www.brickset....ail/?Set=7998-1). Also, there's a helicopter screen (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2483), palm leaves (either these http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2518, or these http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=6148), and one of those cupboards, I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct sort (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=6197). There is clone brand stuff, but their is at least some Lego in it. Hope that helps.

Another thing to look for in eBay lots are pieces and references to military-themed sets. With only a few exceptions, TLG has not made modern military-themed parts or sets, so bits of battleships, tanks, etc. are likely to be from non-LEGO sets.

I looked up the auction and saw the full weight and what you paid for the lot, which is on the high end of what you would have paid in the US for a similar lot (even with non-LEGO mixed in), but not unreasonable.

Thanks all- I meant to add a link but forgot and its a faff on my phone. Looking at what Lego goes for by the kilo from "specialist" sellers this side of the pond (give or take £25/kilo with minifigs etc stripped out) the price was ok.

I know from getting out my childhood lego "clean, all Lego" listing can often be genuine mistakes-the amount of random bits and childhood stickiness in mine shocked me.

Interestingly the green truck body was what initially worried me -guess that was fropm the years my uni friends and myself criticised Lego for trying to be too model like

Will see on Thursday what I get and report back-this seems a good forum even as a lurker.

I couldn't make positive ID about the boat hull via Bricklink search: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?q=hull but maybe you can spot something?

I've bought random lots off eBay. The average going price seems to be around $5-$7 per pound in USA of clean LEGO and less for mixed lots. The best deal was a $2.50/lbs lot from eBay from Goodwill of Seattle, the picture showed lots of hot wheel cars and plastic soldiers. The price is what I got after removing non-LEGO elements plus $18 I got from flipping a GBA system with a Power Ranger game cart that was included in LEGO lot.

mileage always vary. But seller that is connected to Goodwill is almost always 100% mixed random toy, clones, K'Nect, non-brick stuff, and never clean LEGO lot.

I'm genuinely curious about the origin of that ships hull? I don't recognize it.

It's bizarre looking- doesn't look like any megabloks hull I've seen online and looks legoy in some ways (split sections, shape of middle pieces) but I'm fairly sure it isn't genuine-best hope is the plates/beams in it are genuine.

Will sort the lot and anything none genuine will go to plastics recycling.

It's absolutely not Lego. The only ship hull Lego ever did close to that color was I believe the Harry Potter Durmstrang ship. Which was a lot smaller. Plus Lego Bow pieces aren't flat like that at the upper edges. But don't just toss it without figuring out what it is. Even non Lego ships generally have some value or collectors interest, if you have all the pieces.

Hah! Found it. It's from Character Builder.

http://www.characterbuilding.eu/hmaf/large-playsets/

The Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer. Kind of an unusual and interesting looking set. I'm guessing you are in the UK? It's really strange to see much Character Builder in North America that isn't Dr. Who or Scooby Doo.

...another thing to bear in mind when you finish sorting it out is the accuracy of the description in ebay.

Like most people who've posted above, I'm happy to turn a blind eye to a few apparently accidental 'stowaways' in a LEGO lot.

....but if the description is reasonably definite, eg "100% LEGO, triple checked personally by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen" , and it turns out to be 40% megab**ks, then you should take it up with the seller....many sellers will be genuinely apologetic and perhaps give you a partial refund.

Cheers,

LLL

This has happened to me - a lot that was advertised as "maybe has a few non-LEGO pieces" turned out to be only about half LEGO. I sent the seller a picture of the two piles I sorted and he gave me a partial refund. I don't think most people are trying to be deceitful, they just can't tell / don't know about the difference.

Right, lot is here and sorting is proceeding.

So far it seems the non lego elements are mostly Character builder (two sets I think) and a smattering of megabloks. Nothing too bad so far- majority is lego. Some broken pieces (maybe less than a dozen) Biggest problem is the stuff is rather fragrant.... someone's big on the air freshner at home I suspect!

Sets I've identified as being represented so far are (in addition to those listed above);

4770-1 (blizzard blaster)

7945-1 (fire station)

7477-1 (T-1 Typhoon vs T-rex)

4210-1 (Cost Guard platform)

8633-1 (Mission 4: Speed boat rescue)

4766-1 (Graveyard Duel)

3827-1 (Adventures in Bikini Bottom)

What's surprised me is this is clearly more than one persons lego- got some very old figures and some parts I recognise from my childhood, along with the modern stuff.

Not a bad deal, so far.

If you have the entirety of the Typhoon vs Trex set that could easily more than make up for any non Lego parts. That set is crazy expensive these days.

I doubt it unfortunately-not seen much of the T-rex yet.

Fantastic! Great news on your lot, I always find it fun to sort such lots, the chance and excitement while going through it, looking up the unique parts and never knowing what you might have in front of you. I've noticed these sorts of lots are far from a kids collection, more like a family collection that's been passed from Cousin to Cousin to Brother to Sister. Good luck in your hunt!
