New York Toy Fair Coverage Part Four: Monster Fighters and Dino

Recommended Posts

Shortcut to Part One: Hero Factory

Shortcut to Part Two: Ninjago

Shortcut to Part Three: City

This year, Aanchir and I were invited to attend Toy Fair representing BIONICLEsector01 and HEROsector 01. Since our sites' normal coverage doesn't extend outside the constraction themes, we reached an agreement with Eurobricks to share with them our coverage of the LEGO Collectors Preview and all the sets and themes on display. Part three of our coverage shall cover two themes: LEGO Dino and LEGO Monster Fighters. The former theme consists entirely of sets already released, but Monster Fighters is new, and scheduled for release in August.

Dino

The Dino theme features dinosaurs and a team of humans tasked to stop the breakout of dinosaurs from attacking the city. Each set includes unique dinosaur figures and minifigs with vehicles and bases to capture the loose dinosaurs. The 2012 press guide refers to this theme as "iconic" and "an evergreen in construction." Exactly what they mean by this, we are not sure, but it would seem that this line may be treated like a classic, and we may expect more dinosaur-themed sets in the future.

The headquarters is mostly a large cage for dinosaurs, with a control tower, a helicopter landing pad, a crane with a net, and a turret with flick-fire missles.

Monster Fighters

A new theme to be released in August 2012, Monster Fighters is a line in which a team of "Monster Fighters" who combat classic monsters such as mummies, werewolves and vampires. Each set features a different type of monster, and each includes unique "moonstones", which are collectibles similar in concept to the rings in Atlants or the golden artifacts in Pharaoh's Quest.

A small set; includes a hovercraft, a piece of swampish landscape, and two minifugres, one monster fighter and a Swamp Creature, and a moonstone. The Swamp Creature is an interesting minifigure, to be sure.

Includes a minature helicopter, a chariot pulled by a skelital horse, one monster fighter and the Mummy, and a moonstone. The Mummy's chariot is rather impressive, but the helicopter is less interesting. The Mummy looks similar to the collectible series 3 mummy, though this is a brand new figure, with gray skin and new torso and leg prints.

9463 The Werewolf

243 pieces

USD 19.99

Features a nice car, a spooky tree with an alter for a moonstone, one monster fighter and one Werewolf. The tree would appear to have soem sort of function, as some branches are attached with technice pieces, and there is a lever of sorts in the back. The new Werewolf figure is very nice, especially compared to the old one from LEGO Studios, and includes the same claws used on Wolverine.

9464 The Vampire Hearse

Includes a small motorcycle, a large car, one monster fighter, a Vampire (Read: Dracula) and a Zombie driver. The Hearse looks very cool, with nice details and decals. The monster fighter in this set is a very cool figure, including a new robotic leg piece. The new Vampire figure is very nice too.

9466 The Mad Scientist and His Monster

427 pieces

USD 49.99

CAD 64.99

The labratory is full of cool features, including a laser (which appears to include a light brick), a bed for the Monster that can be angled with gears, and a prisson. The car looks awkward, but has a alot of nice features, including a lot of missles.

9467 The Ghost Train

741 pieces

USD 79.99

CAD 99.99

6866763213_050ea606ba_m.jpg 6866765011_7cd820b818_m.jpg 6866766751_5d8098e499_m.jpg 6889151943_d192cda9ec_m.jpg 6889151521_481f635fb1_m.jpg 6889151117_83c17a4e1a_m.jpg

Features a ghsot train with three cars, a propellor plane, two monster fighters and three ghsots. The plane includes flick-fire missiles and some kind of barrel with hoses (A vacuum ala Ghostbusters, perhaps?). The Train is not designed to work on traditional LEGO tracks, but engine uses regular LEGO train wheels, and thus could theoretically be used on regular tracks. The ghosts use a new type of glow-in-the-dark plastic, whcih appears whiter than previous GITD plastics when in light.

9468 Vampire Castle

949 pieces

USD 99.99

CAD 129.99

6866770411_e9141e82a9_m.jpg 6866772225_70edb318a8_m.jpg 6866773993_66925a60b4_m.jpg 6866775929_2b2b78326a_m.jpg 6867158263_6fae4b7dfd_m.jpg 6867140363_99bfe0ac4f_m.jpg 6867142425_367927a924_m.jpg 6867146287_eb87acef16_m.jpg

The largest set, featuring Dracula the Vampire's castle, a car with a net-launcher in the back, two monster fighters, one male and one female vampire, and two man-bats. The castle has a plethora of nice features, including an interior, a spiked pit trap, an organ, and more. Of particular note is the castle's clocktower. The face of the "clock" has slots for each of the six moonstones, which can be spun by a knob in the back, or unfolded by pushing the knob inward. It's a very nice feature, and includes great new technic parts too.

Our next part shall cover the new LEGO Super Hero sets. Stay Tuned!

Monster Fighters has some of my favorite sets of the year by far. I'll be getting most, if not all, of these sets.

I like the idea of the castle more than the castle itself. :sceptic:

The ghost train, however, looks better than ever!

I agree but I'm amazed at the price of the train set. After the $20 set these are all more than 10c per piece and its not even a licensed set!

I love the new green tree pieces in the werewolf set and smallest set: two guys (one a gorgeous swamp monster), a frog and a silver fish + blocks for $7, best deal there.

I'm glad the helicopter in the mummy sets doesn't have much to it except the dark red cone and a grey corrugated round brick, it lets the chariot have all the great gold pieces but doesnt bump the price of the set up. Is that a pearl gold palisade brick at the front of the chariot?

I hadn't seen the organ yet! oh that's fantastic.

I love that the vampire's mystic crystal thing is Bacardi branded

And I wonder if more olden b movie ideas are gonna get short themes. cursed egypt dig, saucers and tripods, monster movies... I don't know what follows from that...

And actually I'd really be into a second wave for this, but besides the phantom of the opera and the blob, I'm not sure what new boogeymen they could bring in. well, a headless horseman. I'd really take something like the sorta send-off addendums that SPIII and Vikings got; super small wave to round out the collection.

Lego did a fantastic job here and I hope this theme will stay more then just one wave like Alien Conquest and Pharaoh's Quest.

Yes this seems like a new or other version of the T-rex sold in the first wave...? Can't say I like this more than the "original" which I think looks very cool.

Also funny that all places I see people comment on that strange looking blue car but no one seems to notice that it looks like a classic Citroén 2CV of course in a customized attack version

The zombie driver is just amazing!

I agree. Although I really don't like the werewolf. I much prefer the CMF version.

I have not seen that organ in the castle, very exciting! I am really liking this theme for the most part. A lot of the pieces I don't care about, but the monsters and some of the fighters are the big draw for me. I am torn to buy some of the sets or just bricklink the figures.. I like that blue car, I just think it is a bit big for my taste. I may have to modify it, just like that green car.

The zombie driver is amazing. I love this uniform. And I'm pumped for the guy with the bowler, although I don't care about robotic legs. After looking at the price and what you get, I definitely will not be buying the ghost train. I want the ghosts, but I don't care about the rest and that is too expensive for just the figures. Especially if that Haunted House comes about since it had ghosts flying in front of it.

As far as Dino goes, I originally wanted a lot of those sets because it brought back good memories of Jurassic Park and my love for dinos in the mid-90s. But with all these other themes coming out, I will not be getting any of those sets after all. And I don't think I'll regret it much. Although the printing looks awesome for sure.

Thanks for the coverage!

That ghost train is awesome! I'm not sure why people are disappointed in the content - you get a lot of GITD elements as far as I can see, and it's only 10.8 cents per piece- not far from the golden ratio.

Also, it appears that there are no stickers in that set either. Hurrah!

It should be remembered that even if a set is already out in stores, the ones displayed at Toy Fair and similar events are not guaranteed to be finalized. Last year I remember at least one Toy Fair had a prototype version of the Battle of Naboo set that had non-printed Gungan heads. Chances are this print for the olive green T-Rex is just an earlier version of it that never made it into sets.

Good observation about the car. I'm not much of a classic car buff so I never noticed the similarities myself.

I was tempted by the castle but after seeing close ups I may just hold out a little longer to see what the 'exclusive' leaked on the designer vid recently is like. Quite tempted by 9466 though, nice figs and very cool vehicle!

I'm thinking a large Gorilla based on the Wampa or Hulk large figs, the top of a tower. A captive maiden and a biplane?
