New to studless, where to start.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been messing with Technic since i was a kid, 20 years on i decide to delve back in to the world of technic and notice the trend is now studless, pretty much most of the parts are new to me.

Anyway, picked up a bunch of sets to build, take apart and experiment with, as well as two XL motors.

Would anyone have any links of good places to start for ideas, or instructions for more complex stuff such as gears and things?, after a few hours of reading about before signing up it seems the current trend is to create something unique then sell it?, i'm not really interested in making any money, i'd just like to experiment with things.

Ideally, i'd like a basic transmission to work from so i can strip it down and rebuild it, to similar specs but with different features (electronic shifting maybe?).

The sets i have for the record are 8070, 8068, 8069, 8071, 8109 and 8043 (then an 8879 controller and two 8882 XL motors)

My past exploits with lego were doing silly things like using normal lego and technic to try and recreate the old model team trucks just from pack-shots alone xD, never really went well!

Here is a transmission that is fairly basic and studless. Not sure what you mean by the current trend is to build something and sell it, there are only a handfull of people that I know of who actually do that.

Welcome to the Forum!

First try looking at some of the great models on Brickshelf. Many fantastic builders post photos there. Some stand out builders are Nico71, Sariel, and GuiliuG.

Overall the best thing is to just build! i to have trouble building studless and i find after looking at other people's models i get inspiration.

Thanks! i'll give it my best shot and post some results!

Ah i just meant that people with good designs tend to hang on to them (and rightly so), didn't want to step on any toes!

I've had a look at that design earlier but i'm not sure which peices are being used to mount the 5x3 L brick on a106.jpg and that's a fairly major peice D:

[EDIT] argh wait, it's those sort of m-shaped bridges isnt it!

Welcome to the forum, you will only get better if you build.

Keep it simple to start and gradually make the next creation it more complex in some way

Welcome! Nice to have another Technic builder around.

Everything I build is studless, and it does take some getting used to. When building something with studless pieces, I tend to build in sections and work left to right or front to back. Very rarely do I work from the ground up, like I would with studed parts. Once the sections are complete, I combine them together to form my moc. It causes you to think ahead, and in that sense, I think studless building can be a bit more complicated; however, I also think it is easier to build more complex mechanisms with studless parts.

If you like building cars, I recommend reading Paul's website, www.crowkillers.com. He has some transmissions designs on there as well, which TechnicJuan has already mentioned. I believe Paul also sells built transmission on ebay from time to time, and you may be able to buy one just to study.

I haven't sold any of my mocs yet, but it has crossed my mind a few times.

I was able to replicate crowkillers gearbox, despite being short on a few parts (i have them, just not got around to stripping down most of the default models i made so far!), do i swapped out a few peices (used some 4140430's instead of 4162857's) then i found that the gear shifter sat a little too loose on top of the gearbox and would slide about, so i adjusted how the top plate attaches, using bracket shift to both place the part in the right location but also drop it a few mm, now sits snug, still easy to select a gear but doesnt slide about on it's own anymore.

the rest of the framework added is just to hold the motor and wheel nicely for testing.

going to pull it apart again and see if i can make a triptronic shifted next! :o
