Let's sit on a horse!

Recommended Posts

It's funny that everyone seems to hate that the Friends figures have to stand on (in) the horse. It seems like everyone has forgotten that minifigs also stand in the horse! The difference is that on a minifig horse, we don't notice because of the saddle. I really like the look of the Friends horse, so I set out tonight to create a modification. My goal was to create a saddle that could be used on the horse and look decent. I also wanted to get a Friends minidoll to sit, and so I had to make a modified minidoll too.

Jake is glad he can finally sit down on his fancy new horse.

Andrea is also happy she can sit on her horse!

Here are the actual modifications I made.

I've manged a first version of independent legs for the Friends figs. Really I think TLG could have done something like this and it would be so much better than the single leg. I will be refining this design and updating this post when I have something new.

Great customisation work, darkdragon! Although I wouldn't myself go through all this effort to improve my Friends figs, I would like to see an official release along these lines. I wish there could be a second generation of Friends minidolls in the future, with increased poseability. I'd actually be more interested in knee joints than independent legs, and functional wrist joints -- although the slender Friends arms make this a very unlikely prospect.

I like the idea of the horse! Not completely for the outcome, the horse is a bit too cute for my taste; but for the fact that you see the new horse mold, combine it with the old saddle and make compatibility issues yield to your will until it works how you like it. That's a good customizing spirit IMHO.

I think Andrea should be the spokesmodel for Weight Watchers with those new pants!

I like the idea of having a saddle for the new horses, and I like the size of the horse overall since horses do come in different sizes hehe.. But it is a bit "cute" for a serious war machine.

Great customs! Keep up the good work!

Is it bad that I thought this was about the Old Spice guy when i saw the title?

Great modifications, Darkdragon--REALLY like that saddle, and if LEGO were to pick up on your modified Friends lags, it would almost make the mini-dolls bearable...gah, what am I saying?!

Again, great work!

Thank you everyone. I'm planning to refine the legs mod a little more but wanted to at least show you what I was doing. I'm glad you all seem to like the saddle too, I think it really makes a huge difference (improvement) to the look of the horse overall, especially if a figure is riding the horse which looks realllllly strange without a saddle.

Hey Darkdragon, did you ever get around to more minidoll customisation? I totally dig this ^ - when I saw the saddle I was like 'Neat! A brick-built saddle! (almost!) I think it's totally usable. And the non-moving legs really bug me with the minidoll, it makes no sense to me (why can't their skirts have a little gap, would that be so bad?)

I found this on the down under forum I'm on, but she doesn't say how she modded the minidoll or anything, which is a tad annoying - but it's still impressive!

As someone who doesn't buy Friends I didn't realize the legs were a single piece. That's freakin' terrible.
