W.I.P English Galleon (Princess Ceinwyn)

I finally had my first free weekend since april, so I decided to work some more on this ship. My main aim with this is a ship thats cheap and easy to build, as I plan to build a few of these. My budget was £80, which is cheaper then most official Lego ships availible. Im still under my budget, allthough I have had to make sacrifices. In this case I couldnt choose many fancy colours for checker patterns as it works out more expensive, ive also had to go with red brown as its cheaper as well. The ship itself is quite basic and simple to build, but still has a realistic sort of look. Its not finished yet, as I still have to finish the rigging, make the sails and add the finishing touches to the bow. Hopefully she will be finished soon and ready to set sail. Anyway, here are the current pics:

Galleons are in face my favourite ship type and I'm hoping to be building a galleon (almost) like yours over the summer too!

I love the colour scheme and all the details - the whips are used expertly. I'm also pleased to hear about this being on a low budget - I was worrying whether I'd be able to afford such a project as I also have another one on the go, but if you can build all this in under eighty pounds I'll be fine! Did you buy all the pieces from scratch, though? Because if not then I may have to accomodate a slightly higher budget!

I have a few questions on her, but I don;t want to clutter up your thread, so would it be alright if we struck up a PM conversation?

Thankyou, Galleons are my fav too, but they are hardly built here. The most expensive part to buy are the hull pieces, and I advise you opt for the old style stern piece as it's far better for the job then the new one. I used my own pieces to work out how many of different parts I needed to buy, like the tooth plates. I had a load in silver, and used those to work out how many I would need to order in the other colours. That basically how Ive been making it, if you find out the exact number of special parts you need, then you won't end up paying more for a large estimate. The red brown is pretty cheap as it's a common colour, as is white and black. Even the tooth plates were cheap and the dark brown tiles have gone down in price too. It's a case of how detailed you want your ship to be. CGH and Bonaparte used a lot of rarer colours in a checker pattern which looks marvelous but is more expensive. The inside of the ship is done with all the old bricks I never use, which everyone has, so that isn't added in the price, nor is the rigging and sails, so you have to add on extra for those. But basically, 95% of this ship was bought off brinklink and totals about £73 so far, but I still have to order a few more parts for the bow. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Thankyou, your ship has been a great inspiration while building this. Like I said above, if you keep it simple with a lot of the parts, then you'll be surprised how much cheaper it is to build. However, once I've finished this one I plan on building the next as the flagship, which will have four masts and I'd like to do a nice rare colour design, so that will probably be more expensive. Thankyou for your comments. Once I have finished this ship I will start on the next one and I may take a few pictures of the various stages of the build, but there isn't much point of doing a tutorial as CGH has covered all the main points of how this is built in his tutorial. Using his, you can basically build any type of ship you want. The only difference is the shape. My best advice is to find a picture of a Galleon and use that along with CGH tutorial. It's all built on the same technique, just use the first part of the tutorial and change it according to the shape of the galleon in the picture. Take your time on it and always remember to have a good look at every angle when you build, to make sure you get the shape right. There are great rigging and sail making tutorials available right here as well, so you have everything you need. I admit that galleons look more difficult, but once you get started and try some designs you will eventually come up with something that works well. Like I said, I will post some pics from the stages of my next ship, and if there really is enough call for it then I will do a short tutorial, but if you ask CGH or Bonaparte they will tell you that everything is there in his tutorial and you can build mostly any ship from that. Thanks for your great feedback. Regarding the whips and muskets, this was a pain. I tried every possible way to connect them with different clips but that caused problems. There isn't a large selection of bricks with clips in brown colour and they also stick out so that the whips were not sitting flat against the hull. This made them look more like random things stuck to the side rather then wood carvings which is the desired effect. So in the end I desired to just glue them as it's impossible to attach one to a sloped brick. I bought the pieces expecially for this moc which I don't intend to take apart, so it didn't bother me to much. However, glueing them wasn't easy as you can only use the smallest amount and if it smudges you are left with a unsightly mark. So it wasn't easy, but the effect is well worth it. Im not a big fan of cutting and gluing bricks, but in this case there was no other way, but I don't intend to take it apart so it's not a problem.

That's an amazing ship you got there! The fact that strikes me the most is that it's possible to build such a fine looking ship for only £80 . Does it have an interior? I'm guessing no, since CGH's method for building ships kinda restricts any possibility of detailed interiors.

Yes this is another new evidence of your talent to build it in a 100% realistic and beautiful look.

This one and of course the ship of bonaparte and CGH are the best versions of a galleon. If I can ever finish my project sooner or later this kind of galleon have to be build in the planque technique. But this can take month to it.

To glue the parts is a little bit strange but the result looks perfect.

Apropos building instructions. I´m not a fan of doing this. There are two big nice versions of ships. The fregate and the galleon and if second one will have a building instrucion too, many people copy one of them and no new stuff will be create. That´s a little bit sad imho.

Can´t wait to see it finish.

Fantastic work Derfel. The lines look excellent, and the details are great. The rigging is particularly well done. I only wish there was a star somewhere on her! (Afterall Ceinwyn's symbol was a star if I recall my Cornwell correctly) She looks right fit to repel the armada along with Golden Hind though Just needs a crew and some sails

This ship keeps getting better and better. I remeber the early stages and its awesome to know that you can make a fleet of these bad boys at a cheap cost. I really like the mast design it looks good and like others have said you should make a tutorial! Also I like the whip and muskets design, I know its always a bummer if you have to glue pieces but like you said, if your gonna leave it built then who cares. Kepp up the great work can wait to see the finish product!
