The Flying Dutchman Posted May 7, 2011 I loved the spiral staircase immediately and started to build my own. In this new set it is a spiral staircase based on a 1 x 4 plate. I experimented with different size plates and came up with this staircase based on a 2 x 6 plate. I decorated it with a colourfull carpet and made convenient banisters. see: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Debarg/staircase/0001_spiral_staircase.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Debarg/staircase/0002_spiral_staircase.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Debarg/staircase/0003_spiral_staircase.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Debarg/staircase/0004_spiral_staircase.jpg

lightningtiger Posted May 7, 2011 Very nice staircase 'The Flying Dutchman', looks better than the HP/Batman staircases ! Brick On !
malleable Posted May 7, 2011 Great job! Love the color scheme. I've been wanting to try out spiral staircases since I saw the front steps of Market Street.
RileyC Posted May 7, 2011 Looks great! Everything looks spot on and the colours go really well together. One suggestion, could it look better if you placed cheese slopes on the railing? It could make it look more like a slope. I havent seen that done anywhere before so maybe it could turn out pretty good.

I've experimented already with your suggestion, but it doesn't work out very well, since the cheese slopes don't give room for the needed curve in the rails. The overall result is then that there are nasty obstacles on the rails (try to glide off... ouch!) In the plate 1x4 version of the Pet Shop though it works. Then again the rails don't give enough room for a minifig to ascend or descend the stairs, so you should make the stairs based on a 1x6 plate scale. The result then is very nice. I'll make some pictures later to show what I mean.
Blackknight112 Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) Wow, looks great! I think I gonna use it for a MOC Edited May 8, 2011 by Blackknight112
The Flying Dutchman Posted May 9, 2011 Wow, looks great! I think I gonna use it for a MOC You're welcome to do so! In addition to the discussion above I've uploaded several other stairs I made based on the Pet Shop stairs. The 1x4 plate version with rails + cheese slopes shows a nice staircase. The sloping looks very good, but there's no minifig that could climb this stairs... It's the staircase to the left in the newest pic: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Debarg/staircase/0005_spiral_staircase.jpg I've also experimented with the Wedge, Plate 4 x 2 Right and made two versions (with the same plate - different colours): one swiveled in the same way as the earlier staircases, and one with the same plate, but swiveled the other way around. I like this construction very much (the right one of the three). Please let me know what you think!
Roodaksta Posted May 10, 2011 Amazing staircase! I like the colour scheme on the steps. Great job!
HighFlyer Posted September 3, 2011 Fantastic creation! I think that when LEGO do stairs, there should sometimes be some sort of carpet colour (depending on the furnishings inside the building itself), instead of the usual brown, black, or grey.
brickmack Posted September 4, 2011 Nice. I might have to borrow that. I like the "carpet" addition.
snaillad Posted September 4, 2011 Looks great, Would of liked to do something like this in the house im currently building but have not got enough room for 6 wide staircase. Colour theme looks fab too. Hard to tell from the pic, which blue is it?
The Flying Dutchman Posted September 4, 2011 Hard to tell from the pic, which blue is it? Thanks for the compliments (all of you the last days). I think I've used the Medium Blue tiles. I have dismantled the stairs for a few weeks now, so I can't check. I've also experimented with 'dark turquoise', they do very nice in combination with the dark red. Combining colours: fascinating stuff :)
