Review: 3862 Harry Potter Hogwarts

Well this looks like a great parts pack, perhaps a wee bit expensive when you don't have nerdy friends to play the game with but still an interesting proposal.

Please enlighten me Dunjohn, if I understand correctly there is no big green baseplate in this game, instead the game board is built on those little green plates?

That's correct, here it is from below:

Hmm, now that I look at it, the central 6x6 flat tile isn't really connected by much, but it's still solid.

Indeed. Harry Potter Hogwarts seems much more along the lines of the Ravensbuger board game Master Labyrinth in which you have tiles with paths on them which you must move around in order to navigate through the maze and collect items on your list.

And that's exactly what I was thinking of. It was the word 'master' that tripped me up. This is indeed like Master Labyrinth, which has always been a favorite of mine.

As to my previous Dumbledore in Dark Red robes comment, I just rewatched Chamber of Secrets last night, and Dumbledore does indeed wear dark red robes in a few scenes in that film. LEGO never released him as such as a full figure, but it isn't inaccurate. Perhaps sand blue would have been a better pick, but only because Dumbledore wears sand blue in more films than he does dark red.

Thanks for the information! Those huge grey tiles can come in handy for street laying. Yes, definitely a set that I would like to buy, especially if I can find it on sale someday.

And thanks for the review Dunjohn, you are becoming quite the Games theme specialist!:thumbup:

Thanks!

I just had a game with my brother, him playing as Griffindor and Hufflepuff and me as Slytherin and Ravenclaw. It was a lot of fun, though we fudged a couple of the movement rules and didn't realise until it was too late to stop. I think that only sped the game up, it lasted about twenty minutes as we played it. It was quite strategic playing as two houses, because we could use spare shifts from one of our houses to set up the other.

Nice review! It looks a lot more fun that most of the other LEGO games. I just picked this up today, admittedly for the parts (mmm, 2x2 jumper), though the girlfriend likes Harry Potter so maybe we'll try the game once or twice.

Oh, and I saw it at both TRU and the LEGO Store, and TRU had a $10 markup on it! At least here it California, it was $29 at the LEGO Store and $39 at TRU. :hmpf_bad:

Thanks for sharing this review. I will take note of it and index it later on in the Other Themes Reviews index. This could be my first LEGO games set if I could find it locally though. Very interested printed parts as well, especially those maps and tiles.

Hate to be a bumper, but I will like to extend my thanks to Dunjohn for this review whom have convince me to own one of my very first LEGO Boardgames.

I built and played this too, the other week, and even my mother picked up the hang of it on the first game. Haha! It's fun - I really like these games which have only now just become available in Oz  And this one has lots of nice pieces. I love the new panel piece and a dark brown cat is always welcome.

Better late than sorry, nice review @Dunjohn Fun reading :)

General: Why on earth can this set/game not be available on Bricklink, not a single one?! Is that bad or good news?

Not sure what you mean since a quick search on both BrickLink and eBay yielded a bunch of these for sale...?
