Sariel's Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Trial Truck with PF

Recommended Posts

"Sariel" (Paul Kmiec) has graciously taken the time to create detailed, step-by-step building instructions for his Lego Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: http://sariel.pl/2010/04/jeep-wrangler-rubicon/#more-1376 . It did well at a recent Truck Trial event, and over 10 days' time he created the photos and digital drawings for the Jeep's chassis, front axle, and rear axle: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=428708 . :sweet:

"Datasheet:

Completion date: 18/04/2010 11-e1271792522196.jpgDSC04383-e1271795480179.jpg

Power: electric (Power Functions)

Dimensions: length 47 studs / width 24 studs / height 23 studs

Weight: 1.224 kg

Suspension: pendular, stabilized with 2 shock absorbers per axle

Motors: 1 x PF Medium, 1 x PF XL"

Thanks, Paul, for sharing your great MOC with many of your fans!:thumbup::thumbup:

Not sure why no one has commented. I love this model and will be building one as soon as I can, although my current backlog of models to build is quite long. I'll probably also do this one in MLCAD so I can render it.

Maybe they all post on Sariels website.

Sariel had made a great work with the rubicon.

Sariel told Blakbird: "These are 81.6 x 38 R tires. They seem to suit it better than any other."

If anybody makes a complete Parts List of Sariel's Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model, could you post it? So far, there's a Parts List for the Front and Rear Axle Assemblies....

I'm in the midst of making an MLCAD model of the whole thing. When I'm done, I'll post the parts list.

I am building it now - I loved it so much I moved it to 1st on my list - Fun build, had almost all parts, just waiting for a few odds and ends. I even loved the color! Great job on this Moc!

So... you just got me to finally register at Eurobricks guys :P

I never expected to see such a great response to this MOC. I told Blakbird that somebody has just sent me a pretty good MLCad model of my Rubicon already... but then again, it's just a model with no instructions yet, so I can make instruction out of it or wait for Blakbird to finish his. I'm not sure which option is better - Blakbird is sure the MLCad master :) and handles this tool much better than I do, but then again there may be some inaccuracies in the photos I've taken, that I could correct from my memory... What's your opinion Eric?

I'll finish the model and let you take a look. In a couple of cases the photos were blurry or I had some trouble seeing exactly which parts were used, but I think I've been able to figure them all out (I already asked you about the wheels and tires). I'm also adding all the instruction steps as I do the build so the MLCAD file will also be an instruction file. I made slight alterations to the order of steps for the file though to make parts movable. For example, each series of parts which are on the same axle are made into a submodel so I can rotate them as a group to get all the gears to line up and to make the pendular suspension and steering movable. So far so good!

Pity you can't add Lucius the hamster though ;)

Very nice! Looks like the real thing!

From Wikipedia.com, here's what "JEEP" stands for:

"There are many explanations of the origin of the word "jeep," all of which have proven difficult to verify. One notion holds that the vehicle bore the designation "GP" (for "Government Purposes" or "General Purpose"), which was phonetically slurred into the word jeep. However, R. Lee Ermey, on his television series Mail Call, disputes this, saying that the vehicle was designed for specific duties, and was never referred to as "General Purpose" and it is highly unlikely that the average jeep-driving GI would have been familiar with this designation. The Ford GPW acronym actually meant (G for government use, P to designate its 80-inch (2,000 mm) wheelbase and W to indicate its Willys-Overland designed engine).

"Many, including Ermey, suggest that soldiers at the time were so impressed with the new vehicles that they informally named it after Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye cartoons created by E. C. Segar. Eugene the Jeep was Popeye's "jungle pet" and was "small, able to move between dimensions and could solve seemingly impossible problems."[1]

"Words of the Fighting Forces by Clinton A. Sanders, a dictionary of military slang, published in 1942, in the library at The Pentagon gives this definition:

"'Jeep: A four-wheel drive vehicle of one-half- to one-and-one-half-ton capacity for reconnaissance or other army duty. A term applied to the bantam-cars, and occasionally to other motor vehicles (U.S.A.) in the Air Corps, the Link Trainer; in the armored forces, the ½-ton command vehicle. Also referred to as "any small plane, helicopter, or gadget.'

"This definition is supported by the use of the term "jeep carrier" to refer to the Navy's small escort carriers".

The instructions will be available for free. I have finished roughly 75% of mine, and I intend to publish it both as a gallery in my Brickshelf folder and as a single PDF file at my website.

By the way, it was your work Nico that convinced me that it's possible to make a readable instruction based on photos :)

I apologize for the doubled post, but the instruction is finally ready, along with a complete parts list. You can browse it at my website, download it from my newly launched Downloads section, or directly from here: http://sariel.pl/down/sariels_jeep_wrangler.zip

Enjoy.

Thanks, Sariel! I just downloaded your 51.4-MB .ZIP file, and the instructions are first rate. :classic: For those who haven't visited his website today, here's what he wrote:

"Sariel.pl has posted a new item, 'Wrangler Takeaway'. Sariel.pl has a Downloads section now. The list of files available fordownloads is not a long one at the moment, but starts with a complete, highquality step-by-step instruction for my acclaimed Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model. You can get it for free and try to build one on your own. You may view the latest post at http://sariel.pl/2010/05/wrangler-takeaway/ .... Best regards, Sariel admin@sariel.pl .":thumbup:

I'm collecting the parts needed to make Sariel's Lego Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model. When looking at his Parts List, I noticed some unfamiliar descriptions of certain parts. In order to get the missing parts from Bricklink. I went ahead and made an Excel spreadsheet that lists the Part Numbers, Bricklink Descriptions, COLORS, and quantities needed to complete the "genuine Sariel" model. There were 14 part numbers that were not quite correct. If somebody wants this list (in either Excel 2003 or Adobe Acrobat PDF format), e-mail me at LudersDG@MSN.com and I'll send it to you. If you want the Excel version, you can add additional columns to keep track of what parts you need, or have ordered from various Bricklink vendors. There's no point in "reinventing the wheel".... :hmpf:

I think the problem you're speaking of results from differences in parts description that exist between MLCad and Bricklink. I got a nice PDF parts list from Blakbird, I believe it takes these differences into account, and it is now included into the instruction package.

@ Sariel: I re-downloaded the 53-MB .zip file, and saw Blakbird's 11-page, 393-KB PDF parts list at the very end of the documents enclosed. I missed a few items in my inventory, so now I'll use Blakbird's list to get my parts ordered. It is very detailed (with Part Number, pictures, colors, and Quantities). Sariel and Blakbird make a nice team! :classic: Thanks to both of you!
