The Master's Review

This is one of my all time favourite pirate sets! I remember I playing with it for hour and hours at my cousin's place, then a few months later my granny gave me one as a gift. For its size it has plenty to do, there's guards on patrol as the commander gets drunk, meanwhile Captain Roger attempts to free his imprisioned cabin boy.

One of the things I liked so much about this sets is the amount of accessories it comes with. There's cannon with cannon balls, a barrel, two goblets, a torch and a parrot. This little details kept me entertain for hours. There's also a generous helping of 5 mini-figures and plenty of swords and guns to keep them well armed. Captain Roger has his own boat with a sail which gives so much more depth than just having an ordinary rowboat.

This set is also colourful hepled along by the blue and red veneer above the latice window as well as the boat's sail. The added colour brings vibrance and excitement further removing the prospect of this set becoming bland. The veneer's colours also correspond to the the soldiers' blue uniform and red epaulettes bringing a sense of balance to the colour scheme. Observe that this colourful harmony is achieved by using only basic colours, proving The LEGO Company's recent trend of using 3 different shades or some obscure colour is unncessary.

The design may be rather simplistic but with all the accessories a more complicated design would be inappropriate. The design suits the nature of the set perfectly well and it doesn't have to be anymore complicated than it is. True to its title it is indeed a lagoon side lockup with an adjoining room, perhaps a mess hall - afterall its UK/Australian name was Soliders Tavern. There are only a few large pieces, the cell door, the boat and maybe the cannon, demonstrating that oversized or specialized pieces are not required when designing a good set.

Furthermore these larger pieces don't draw attentions to themselves, rather they work in harmony with the smaller pieces. Like many of the older sets the parts from this set have great potential in other designs and are cross compatible with a broad range of themes. Due to this potential I've acquire about 4 or 5 Lagoon Lockups when I've found them at a reasonable price.

Maybe my rating has been influenced by fond memories, but I believe Lagoon Lockup is what makes a great medium size LEGO set. It provided me with much inspiration and entertainment when I was younger and I only wish that The LEGO Company could once again inject this kind of imagination and ingenuity into their sets. Its almost a magical artform which sadly they seem to have forgot.

It gets 5 from me!

Now its your turn!

This is a great set. It has everything: the imperial base with the prison and the little pirate boat to rescue your fellow pirate with. And 5 minifgs! Wish they still did that...5/5

I'll have to give this one a '5' Phes. It's a beautiful structure (I've always liked the combination of white and yellow bricks); it has a great assortment of minifigs (among my favorites), uses some nice pieces well (like the door and the window), and comes with a boat w/sail, palm tree, and lots of accessories. What's not to love about this set? I just wish they still made sets like this.

The golden age of sets! It brings a tear to my eye :( Beautiful set, pleasing to the eye, fun without being too childish and ridiculous, and a nice amout of figs and accessories, all with simple parts

*sigh*

i gave it a 5, unfortunately, i don't have it...

it just has everything a pirate set has to have: lots of Minifigs, a ship, a canon, lots of details and an over all look that turns this set into a classic pirate set.

Definitly one of the best mid size range Pirate set TLC ever produced !!!!!

I don't see one thing that need changing (maybe a second canon hehe !!!)

The accessories are fantastic: sail boat, palm tree, canon, barrel, multicolour parrot (and not all red one), cups weapons...

The Mfs are just great: 3 blue coats, a pirate captain arghhhh and a matie !!!

The shape of the building is great with a really nice colour scheme !!!

Oh boy I wish TLC produced set like this now !!! or reissue them as Legends (hurm hurm)

So its a definite 5 there !!!!!

One of my faviourite 5 lego sets ever made... so it has to get a 5! This set is playable if you just open the box (in the old sence of the term -not 4+), can be rebuilt many ways, has enough pieces/figs to make it worth buying duplicates, and has a simple elegance when you just glance its way (or look at the box).

A Great set!

God Bless,

Nathan

Methinks it would be in LEGO's best interest to re-release this set some time in the future... Even though I've got 4 of them I'd still buy more because it contains so many useful pieces and a generous helping of mini-digures.

I always thought this was a prime candidate for rerelease. Especially now, as it contains very few bley pieces...

The grey pices could also be substituted with that Light Stone colour that enter the discussion a couple of weeks ago. I suppose the brown would also be replaced by the newer brown colour but I wonder would these newer colours make the set work as well as it does?

I suppose another major downside to this colour change is that if older sets are re-released that means their colours have to be subsituted for the newer colours or The LEGO Company will need to produce the older colours again. However, if the colours are substituted then consumers are no longer getting the authentic set, although the same could be argued with previous re-releases as their packaging was different to that of the originals.

good choice for review Phes.

This set definately gets a 5. I have a horror story about this set... behold...

I was in the local K-mart and I was in the Lego section of the store (as usual) and it was in sad shape (yes friends, WORSE than most current Wal-Mart Lego sections!) I should have been able to tell the paticular K-Mart was going out of business, but I didn't know.

I saw Lagoon Lock-Up, and with my (at the time) small interest in Pirates, it is a surprise I really wanted the set. I Occassional got really into Pirates (which is whY I was fortunate to have at least a few Pirate sets) but usually i was a town/space kind of guy (which is funny, because now I am a castle/pirate guy). I saw the beautiful set and loved it. I had remembered seeing it in books but never on shelves (if I did it was at Toys R Us and I was too busy looking at other sets). I asked my mom to buy it... and I asked my grandma to buy it - to no avail. I was heartbroken.

Probably about 12 years later and I still don't have that amazing set... it hurts me every day... if anyone wants to sell it for a decent price, I'd love it.

This set is a small fleeting glimpse into what could have been a much better Pirates theme (it was hard to get better, but this could have opened many doors). The UK name was Soldiers Tavern, which means this is a bar. Even if it is a military tavern, it is a building that could EASILY be converted to Civilian use (take away the jail and the cannon LOL) Not that you need to, as soldiers need their mess hall and booze, but imagine the possibilities of Colonial Taverns, Shops, Blacksmiths, and Merchant Docks... it could be amazing. They could be on the seafront like this one, or just inland (which would require grey baseplates probably... but green (like cannon cove) or yellow (to imply a dirt road) would do well too.

This set has a huge amount of figures (5!!! that would be almost unthinkable for a set of its size now) and lots of awesome pieces. It even comes with one of those Lattice windows which always kick megablocks.

I can't think of anything to make this set better... it is just perfect. Definately a serious nomination for a Legend (as in my opinion every pirate set deserves rerelease... ) that Lego should consider. I'd buy 10 probably. Bley and NewBrown couldnt ruin this one.

i gave this set a 5 also... for this same reason. adding a tavern to the pirate theme was a step in the right direction. this set also accomplishes the core value behind LEGO, "to inspire and imagine." so many great MOCs can come out of this set.

thanks for stating it so well sting - brick miner

I've always loved this beautiful little set, although I hate the redbeard fig, the fact that this little set has a total of 5 minifigs, 2 of which wear shako's (Which are very sexy) and just the build itself is very clean, solid, awsome looking. The jail is really nice something, the little bar is awsome..Everything is just great, more lattice windows you really couldnt ask for more. Perfect set.

I never had the set but my friend did so I had the opportunity to examine it and play with it. I think this is one of the best-looking Pirate sets ever made and it shows the magic of the 80's - early 90's Lego perfectly. And I agree it was a great idea to make a tavern set and it was a good starting point for making more kinds of specialised buildings like the forge, armoury, shipyard, shops etc., too bad Lego never did that. Actually there is only one thing I don't like about this set - the mess hall and the floor above it don't have a back wall. So why is there a door if there's no wall? Plus the back part of the building is open to attack because of it! The only explanation I can think of is that this set represents just the front part of a bigger building and there is actually something behind the brown-bearded soldier's back (see the picture). The lack of stairs leading to the upper level and the fact that the back part of the building ends exactly on the baseplate's edge support this theory. Apart from this the set is excellent. I gave it a 5 but - for the record - it should be actually 4.5 because of these really minor disadvantages.

Yes, but we must remember why those disadvantages are there - for playability! I didn't 'play' much with lego ( I usually built stuff ) but when I did play I liked to be able to move the soldiers around in the building. I also liked arranging all the Minifigs around, so having the back open was practical, if not realistic. Besides, the types of pieces and arrangement of the set was good, and we could destroy it and make a more realistic (albiet smaller) building from the set.

I understand where you are coming from but lets consider the back opening there for playability... and not the lame kind either (like certain newer themes).

Ah yes, the 'goon lockup', as I used to call it. This was my first ever pirate set, and is still one of my favorites.

It has a good supply of pieces and minifigs, and the overall model looks great.

This set will always have a special place in my heart. *wub*

Yes, but they could have always made a wall that opens (or a roof). But that would of course rise the piece-count and the price... Well, as I say - that's just a minor disadvantage and even with it - this set is still a masterpiece.

Fantastic set, truly a legend. 5 mini figs, artistic colors and best of all a port/civilian theme, which was sorely missing in the pirates.

5/5

Yeah, this is great set! Good amount of minifigs, good accessories, and plenty of basic bricks. And it was quite cheap back then when it was released (I don't know why, but I seem to remember all the original selling prices of pirate sets, although I was quite young). Unluckily I never got this set but my friend had it back then and we played with it a lot. Perfect set 5/5

5/5 This is a great midsized set. There are many pieces useable to make larger forts. There is a good amount of people in it too and it came with a cannon. I just wish it came with red coats instead.
